gotta be honest man, im jealous of you. i hope some day i can go on various canoe trips like this. minus the walking. so more like camping, canoeing, fishing on a lake without the extra work of hauling it around haha.
Hey Troy, i'm just getting in to the whole Backpacking thing and I must say, I really enjoy your videos. I can't wait to go on a canoeing trip myself. I hope you have some new videos coming along soon!
Nice job on your presentation. Temagami portages can be memorable, indeed, but it's well worth it. How often were you able to fish? Did you manage to land any trout?
wow nice trip Troy, the winds at 8:50 reminded me of my last day in minnesota, i was on a 9 day canoe trip, northern tier, if you know about it, but we had to paddle in headwinds for 12 miles that resembled the winds you faced, gosh it was a great trip
so cool, i would love to check that spot out, do the interior of the adirondack park and peaks not often... but ive done them and continue to get out there
@FlingBoogers Funny this comment should roll in right now. I'm currently packing some food for a trip this coming weekend and listening to the Felice Brothers as I putter along (listing to 'Love Me Tenderly').
The song at the end of this video is called "Got What I Need". If you like that song, you're in for a treat since there's a lot more great stuff they've put out. I really recommend some of their earlier stuff but it can be hard to find.
@rodnlens Glad you liked the song. It's a favorite of mine too. It's from a band called "The Felice Brothers" and the song is called "Got What I Need". I would recommend you check out more of their stuff, this song is one gem of many.
It boggles the mind why so many folks click on the spam-infested, idiot-laden featured vids when with a little searching they'll stumble upon your gems. Outstanding series of vids!
I haven't been there in almost 20 years but the little pool off to the side at the bottom of Helen's Falls was good for a speckled trout meal a few years running. Hope to get back there soon now that my son is 10. Not sure I would take him into the South Muskego region though...man that looked like tough portaging!
I eat very well on my backpacking and canoe trips, but I pay the price in carrying the added weight. My first 8 day trip in the Adirondack High Peaks I was actually quite scared when I initially started out - I was at or above 65 pounds until I ate enogh food to be lighter!
I DO have experience doing week long backpacking trips in the Adirondacks, but the wilderness is not quite as vast as it is in Ontario, from what I understand, and I am usually on a trail.
So the trick would be bringing enough food and gear and then guarding that with my life - because my life would depend on it!
Plus learning GPS and map skills.
And I'm not a fan of eating fish, so I'd have to find a way to make it not taste like fish!
I live in southern New York, just got a Bell Northwind Roayalex tripping canoe, and I know NOBODY personally that likes to do wilderness canoe trips - I'm dying to do it, would never want to do it alone, and would not want to pay a guide a fortune - how would you recommend I find a "partner in crime" or 2 or 3?!
Hey there - see my email to you. 3 of us are planning an 8-14 day trip to Temagami late May/early June. Part of the trip will involve the river/falls/chutes you see in this video. See your email and let me know....
I REALLY appreciate the offer, but I'm at a seniority based job in which senior people pick vacations first, and I'm quite junior so my choice of vacation time isn't so great - I'm lucky to get time off at fall foliage season in the Adirondacks for my annual fall backpacking trip.
I'd LOVE to do wilderness canoe trips, but I don't have any experience with it and would want people that I went with to understand that.
That's actually how I got into solo tripping. I was having hard time finding people that could go when I was able. I was seeing too many weekends go by that I wanted to go but couldn't line up people to go with. Once I started solo tripping, not having people to go with was a blessing in disguise as I ended up just loving it.
I still enjoy going with friends and family but the solo tripping is a different thing.

Yeah I was so excited to "discover" the realtively vast Adirondack Park about 25 years ago - I do as many backpacking trips as I can there every year. And I recently became interested in backcountry trips there by canoe and kayak. Unfortunately all of the biggest lakes have some degree of development on them. There are, however, a handful of good backcountry trips you can do by canoe and kayak. I'm a guy that loves extensive, pristine wilderness so when I saw the size of parks in Ontario...
When I saw the size of parks and undeveloped areas in Ontario I was licking my chops! But I live FAR from there (southern New York state) and I only get so much time off from my job - in 2 years I will get a third week of vacation and I want to spend all or most of it in wilderness! I'd love to find someone willing to map out an amazing multi-lake trip up there and then do the 12 or 18 hour drive to the put in. But he would have to be as or more experienced than I am - the further you go...
But he would have to be as or more experienced than I am - the further you go in the higher the risk I imagine. But I love being in places in which the natural world hasn't been spoiled by man and all of the wonderful things that come with it.
nice to see you back again troy. I enjoy all ur videos! I emailed you a while back bout my algonquin trip and well.. it was awesome. I took some videos while i was there back in July and have had it ready for youtube for quite some time but havent got around to it so im working on it now. Be sure to check it out! ;) Take care
These are great videos Troy. You've done a terrific job with the sound and video. It's been a long time since I canoed in the north, but I just loved joining you on your trips. I've just found you here, and I hope to see more in the future.
They do still make the RoadRunner but the design has been modified and lacks some features I like (mainly, being able to open the fly at the doors, even when raining without getting wet inside). It also hasn't lost any pounds as have many of the other new tents out there. It's true that weight doesn't matter as much with canoe tripping but I still like to shave pounds and size where I can and the tent is a big ticket item in the size and weight department.
Outstanding ! Nice effort. Real glad to see you back. If you don't mind ,what kind of tent is that?It looks a little like a Double Rainbow. (Shires_. Thank's for the vids.
The tent is a North Face Road Runner 3. I really like it since it's rock solid and ventilates extremely well, even in a downpour. It's on the heavy side at 8.5lbs and is starting to show its age with seams that are starting to give. I just haven't seen another tent that has everything I want. I'm starting to narrow down my choices though as I'm not sure how much longer the Road Runner will last.
I have gone with three friends before which was fun but, for the most part, I like keeping the number of people on the small side. Just my personal preference. A club is great idea but would be a very different animal. It's kind of like how I do car camping with the whole family (extended family included) and it's great, but I don't put it in the same category as backcountry canoe tripping. Both are good, just very different.
Thanks. Originally I also found it hard to find anyone to go with who was as passionate about canoe tripping as I was which is why I started soloing. As it turned out I fell in love with it and continue to enjoy solo trips. Being comfortable with soloing is also great for those last minute trips and the only one that has to get ready and have an open weekend is you! I have found a great travel parter though in my buddy who accompanied me on this trip and last years eight day trip in Algonquin.
Hey plow76, I remember you mentioning you were planning a 6 day (I think) trip for this summer, sorry to hear your plans fell through. Hopefully it'll work out for you next season. And yes, more vids are coming.
Yep, that was the trip. Finances came to a head this summer and some things had to be cut from the budget. We WILL be doing a trip next summer come hell or high water! Hopefully we'll get some nice day paddles in during this fall while the leaves are changing.
Any big trips that you're planning for next summer?
Yes, fall is always a beautiful time to paddle. I don't have any trips nailed down yet, I usually don't get around to planning until later in the winter. I will pretty much be always taking 7+ days for a trip with my friend, a weekend trip with my wife then 1 or 2 solos with whatever else I can get it. I pretty much take my trips as time becomes available.
Glad to hear the dog is ok. I can understand why you leave her home. I too have a dog that goes everywhere with me, but she can get in the way when others are about.
Troy, I quite enjoyed watching both vids of this trip. I know it's an effort to make these and put them up. Just wanted you to know that it's worth it! Truly appreciated.
I'm not very familiar with Temagami (yet!) so I'm not sure of the various areas. In the details for this vid I list the lakes that outline this loop. In short we started at Red Squirrel, went North to Eagle, West to Lady Evelyn then took the Lady Evelyn River (South Channel) South to Diamond lake then East back to Red Squirrel.
If you have any other suggestions for some interesting routes, I'm all ears.
Maddy is still about but I've decided that for the most part I'll just be bringing her on my solo trips. This particular trip would have had me on edge for much of it if Maddy had come considering how many cliffs there were and the mud would have been miserable for her as well. I also don't like to impose the extra effort of a dog when I go with others. It can be hard enough taking care of ourselves :) I do have video from a solo trip I did this year with Maddy and will be editing that next.
