This is a fantastic performance. I find it hilarious how anyone can say this is just modern wushu and not real gong fu. To move as well as this requires more training than probably any of you will do in your life, and is therefore gong fu.
You are correct Luohan108. This man is a great kung fu expert. It is funny that the ignorant can look at the finest art achievement and see nothing.
This is one of the most accomplished mantis style experts I've ever seen. A very deadly fighter, he could win most fights so quickly observers would not know how he did it.
This isnt the chow gar tong long that i know of, we never did any kicks unless they were low, i recognise some moves, like narp sau, and gau choi, but...
AHAHAHA!!! Doesn't this guy get whiplash? yangweixin - I guess you like to dance too! You can say "it mainly of traditional praying mantis techniques", but the way it's played is comletely wushu... Why the shaking at the end? What puropse does it serve? It serevs to please the eye - It's performance... this sounds like it could be getting on for wushu in my book...
Though definitely modern wu shu in performance, it does contain many movements taken from the traditional forms. I thought is was very interesting and a performane that might draw others to traditional mantis.
Yeah, this isn't REAL gongfu that's being performed in this video by Zhou Enlai's bodyguard. Why in the world would the 1st Premier of the People's Republic of China ever hire a REAL gongfu practitioner as a bodyguard? Yeah, this guy's just a dancer.
Whoa....thise is way off point...chow gar isn't even mantis kung fu. If you look into your history Chow is a derivative of the Zhu clan fist from the northern royal families. The only reason that it's called Southern Mantis is because it was a name used to throw off the Qings so they didn't know they were Zhu Clan memebers.
Chow Gar is not "true" Mantis, it's Southern Mantis, it's another Jook Lum variation on trapping and short power arts. It bears no resemblence to any other style Mantis at all. If you want to see things that are similar to Chow Gar look atYKM or Robert Chu's Wing Chun
Yeah, definitely not real kung fu - this is dancy prancy wushu. At no point does this dude actually have a root enough to actually issue power, so its either good wushu or terrible kung fu: your call on that one. It's also not Gung Li Kuen.
This is a modern wushu set...but if you watched closely, his stance and execution of the techniques is powerful and effective. The body only has so many movements it can do...if you have kung fu, it doesn't matter the techniques you do...that power will be expressed. I did this form for a tournament and a Hung expert/friend hit me with some of the techniques out of my form and it hurt like hell. But then again he was the Philipine President of the Chin Woo....
this is taken from a documentary called "36 forms of wushu". it's IMHO still one of the best modern wushu documentaries there is, although it was recorded in 1976! it is very hard to find, at least in germany. features terrific modern wushu performances. even all those modern wushu bashers will have to agree that tamende gongfu shi zhen bu cuo de!
Its good for what it is,I have respect for Mr.Yu Hai and the Mantis style, and mantis does have chin na and ground fighting not like wrestling.Mantis does have a lot to offer. Sheng Chenfan
even though this is a wushu mantis set, the guy here does it with a traditional flavor which shows that he is good at traditional kung fu, this mantis set is done awesome, dont look at the form, look at the quality, this is one of the best things on nothern mantis. yall cats are trippin.
This video is not Gun Lik Kuen as the description says, it is the 5 Masters Combined fist commonly known as Yu Hai after the Mantis master Yu Hai Chang. It would hardly be considered Modern Wushu despite its fairly recent invention because it consists mainly of traditional praying mantis techniques, so you can sit on it 108.
Let me clarify: "Wushu boo" as in, I detest how the Chinese Government's influence lets the acrobatic gymnastics that they replaced the original WAR ARTS with to pass for real gong fu. I can't respect modern Wushu as a fighting art, because it simply isn't one...all the zany running around, and movements that fail to cover the center..meaning you are learning to walk into attacks. Taking the reality out of any motion, form, or technique makes it no longer a martial art.
Very pleasing to the eye. It is too bad that so many are critical. CMAs need to be advanced and there are not many that are willing to take the time to truely carry on the tradition. Lets face facts. The eye is the gateway to the soul and if this sequence looks good and gets someone involved then it has served its purpose. Maybe another not so good looking art will then have a chance to be learned due to this performance.
It takes a long time to train in tang lang chuan and to perform it in such a fluid and aesthetically pleasing manner. Though the style lacks modern fighting techniques such as take-downs and BJJ ground fighting, it does have grapple holds with quick attacks making it an idea basic self defense style to learn. Remember, there are many styles of mantis not just only wu shu which is soley for visual performance rather than fighting.
Lacks take downs? And ground fighting? Sorry, but that's absolutely false information. Northern Mantis styles have sweeps and throws everywhere. Any, we do not *grapple* but we do have groundfighting. Sorry, but I couldn't let that kind of disinformation go.
omg i want to move like this. how long would it take? ten years? twenty?

@TaiNan88 He is doing a form well. Doing a form very well does not make you a "deadly fighter".

Nice performace but its not real Tanglang. But as said above if it creates a postive interest in Gung Fu then its all good.

people nowdays think that mixed martial arts can take on traditional asian martial arts and win all the time
which is dumb
