Am a truck driver and I was goin exactly in front of this tornado when it happened I got the video at the moment were the guys were talking about it I was goin south to texas
That is my good friend Richard Scott who graduated w/ me in meteorology at Mississippi State University in 2010. What a great guy who lost his home in the tornado but still saved many lives with his coverage..I'm still at MSU in grad school in meteorology but Richard did a spectacular job of covering it..
How did you get this on youtube? DVR or VHS? I would like to know how to capture things from my dvr to something like Final Cut so I can then either save them or upload them here. Any tips would be appreciated.
@chrisz71 I ripped this from a DVD using Wondershare DVD ripper. Very easy to use. Uploaded to youtube with HP Mediasmart which came preloaded on my computer. Hope this helps.
@bamaguynbham OMG, this event was surreal! He did do a good job here, very much so. A meteorologist in Huntsville, Gary Dobbs, was actually at home and took a direct hit and was unable to make it to his storm cellar in time, was injured and hospitalized but lived.
WVUA is located about 75 yards away from Bryant Denny. At the time, there were lots of things going on at the same time. While the tornado was getting larger and larger, it looked like it was going to brush us by. We had trees down on UA Quad and around WVUA, but that was from the air sucking into the tornado.
The ending of this clip is so chilling......but major kudos to the newscaster for keeping his composure to ensure that the people in the path of this deadly storm knew what was headed their way! My thoughts & prayers go out to all those affected!
This was an F4 for sure, maybe an F5--the most powerful localized weather phenomena on earth. I've been in sustained 70 mph winds--you really can't even stand, just barely maybe make headway. I can't imagine the terror of these poor folks with their kids and everything with this bearing down on them. At those kinds of wind speeds, a basement will help but is by no means a guarantee of survival. F5 tornadoes of over 300 mph can rip the asphalt right out of a highway. Tragic losses and so sad.
@hambone1138 I was losing my cool just watching that monster tornado form up, can't imagine having to report live on it as it was bearing down on their studio. Major props to that man for staying so calm. I'm glad he was unharmed, but it's horrible to hear he lost his home.
@mcrafter1337 You stupid troll stop trying to make this disaster "Funny" over 200 people died. You and try to mock them... thats just patheic. Get a life before ever replying to my coment or anyone else's coment.
@NarutoLoverzzz what? im a storm chaser in training, yeah its a sad story k? but really, dont tell me what to do, and over 200 people xD get your facts straight dumbshit
@willisd432 ... Not sure where you live but im in gadsden alabama I have family an friends all over this beautiful state.. An this comment is wrong on so many levels we lost so many lives this day an not all were being crazy... plz think before you type an speak .. God bless
Im a met major at South Alabama. We are taught to remain calm, b/c if we start a panic...more ppl will die. The reason so many died in the state was b/c a lot of the people affected by these storms had no power from where a line went through early that morning. Sirens didn't sound in some of these areas b/c of no power, and cell service went down. Most of the ppl in the path of these things had no warning what so ever.
@Taz20005 Also, in the case of Tuscoloosa, the tornado was so big and powerful that if you weren't underground, you were likely gonna to be serious hurt or killed
Why do people think just cause the weatherman is calm that it won't be bad?? He is trained to stay calm cause he is in a safe place and he don't want to frighten everyone and cause to much panic which can cause you to think irrational. If he says take sheelter and there is a tornado in the back ground he aint playing. Probably why so many died.
if i live in tuscaloosa and am listening to this news broadcast live im thinking things arent so dangerouse because the weatherman is too calm considering the situation. i hope he didnt cause people to be laxed. its now six minutes into the vid and he just started to pick up excitement level. i watched another news channel video [weatherman with suspenders] and he made the same situation sound much more severe, and it was.
@randalt63 It is his job to remain calm. Why panic? It will freak everyone out nd I sure want a meteorologist who can keep his cool so he can spit the words out correctly and warn people rather than clam up and not speak at all. if you were really sitting there watching this tornado come at you and not move because he didnt panic enough then u must stop taking whatever you are on lol btw he said at least 4 times this is a life threatening situation.Bless everyone in Bama from Tulsa,Oklahoma!

Sadly, it was reported that Richard Scott, the meteorologist on this broadcast, had his home destroyed by this tornado.

I don't think the news station was really in that much danger...the Camera is at the stadium far away...but...it really doesn't matter.

@allisonandysarah The stadium is literally RIGHT next to the WVUA studio in Reese-Phifer Hall.

It appears that the studio lost power at the end of this clip, and that the color bars may have been broadcast from the transmitter.
