  • Quote M. Steven Fish : "Muslims are not inclined to favor the fusion of religious and political authority"

Umm Sharia Law anybody. Death for apostasy. These aren't an fusion of religion and politics???

    M. Steven fish is quite clear a dim wank.

  • boolshit is all that he said

  • This guy's clock stopped in 1989. Russia is a democracy today. It's far from perfect, and has tons of problems -- crime, corruption, etc. But there's a constitution, elections, reasonably free speech, and the right to dissent. Sure, their democracy needs work. So does America's. But rehashing foolish Cold War stereotypes is not helpful.

  • umm.. the elections are DEF. rigged, which only makes Russia a hybrid regime (a regime that is a authoritarian and democractic mixed together). Without having fair elections it makes Russia midway towards a democracy, but it def. isn't one yet. Check the stats and see for yourself :)

  • He's got a right idea. Only, it's rather wordy. Russians are choosing their political fate based on theri needs from viable alternatives on a political landscape. Just as everyone else, America or Africa. Russians are not into "grass roots" political movements - he's right about that.

  • you know everything, very nicely spoken

  • the guy is really laughable :-))

even more so him coming from one of the most controlled societies in the modern industrial world. :-))) and then something like this is lecturing on another nation's inability to handle a democracy... LOL

    cheers.

  • Lets just privatize everything rita! remember that whole deregulation and "democratization" that the west loves, sold the country out! Putin might have stole his money, but at least he didn't bankrupt the country, he did the country some good. How can you ask for more.

What might be good for a Russian, might be terrible for a German - epic line in brat! -that just explains everything.

  • This so called new democracy under Yeltsin brought people to bread lines instead to the so-called "American" Dream!

Plus there was that shitty little mishandling of Chechnya! Ya that war that Putin, all be in "autocratic" way finished! Hell lets just give Siberia away to the Chinese.

It's pretty interesting to observe that the western world is afraid or trouble whenever Russia stands up for themselves, but when they remain "asleep" everyone is hush hush. Double Standards! /rant

  • Its such a shame....American Lecturers are so much more engaging than British ones.

I dont think i'd ever fall asleep in his class...

i cant count ho many times i catch people nodding off some my lectures.

There is so much explanation and clarification, the animation in his way of explaining and enthusism will undoubedly rub off on the student...

    Its not fair.......

    Lucky sods......

  • I have taken two of his classes. He is a very engaging lecturer.

  • Let the russia alone!

Stop talking shiit, if russians like autocracy or democracy is their choice , and if they are happy or not isn't your bussiness stupid !

I think is all about envy .

  • Envy? You are a moron.

  • complete lack of understanding of the russian sphere ofactivity, the russian people, and the EXTERNAL powers at play!

  • heybby

    <3 nom nom za

  • Having said that I must add that I disagree very strongly with the roads that the Russians have taken and I think their laziness to form a civil society and their slavish mentality which prefers a firm hand instead of liberty and freedom is to their detriment and that land will never see true happiness and prosperity! They seamed more concerned with Russia becoming a feared supper power again than with making sure that their government respects their freedom and dignity! They are a doomed nation.

  • The bottom line is that Russians are happier with arbitrary autocracy rather than democracy...the rise rapacious aligarchy was implemented by the "chicago boys" with the doctrine of "Shock therapy" under the guise of democracy.Makes sense that "they don't want democracy"...under American "help Russia establish democracy"through out the 90s Russians sold their own underwears, knives, forks & even turned prostitutes in the streets just to eat.PUTINISM HAS REESTABLISHED RUSSIAN PRIDE & NATIONALISM!

  • If that was the case ritamalik then Yeltsin would not have been elected twice. They simply observed the corruption and instability of that period and for now are content with having a strong a decisive leadership that increases their standard of living. It is not based on some Slavic defect for democracy or a Superpower mentality.

  • What a superb analysis! Being a person who has lived in Russia a long time (1998-2005) during the end of Yeltsin's era and witnessed the election of Putin and the rise of Putinism this analysis made many things more clear for me. I was really puzzled with the attitude of the Russians and their passive mentality and their reluctance to fight for their fragile democracy. This video makes a lot of sense to me. It very much reflects the Russian mentality and its love of autocracy.

  • Please tell me why Democracy has failed in the third world, especially in the very back yard of Uncle Sam? Cause as far as I'm concerned it took the rise of Hugo Chavez's socialism to spark & improve the lives of Latinos today. Not pro-Amercan(democratic)government.

  • A very interesting analysis. I'm convinced that work needs to be done on the concept of "limited autocracy": an autocracy which guarantees a strong and effective government which is able to achieve public goals and can prevent the rise of rapacious oligarchy, but which is also limited to prevent megalomanic tendencies. It would be a half-way stage between arbitrary autocracy and liberal democracy. Know of any research on this idea?

  • stereotype much?

  • dogtv stereotypes are mostly very true. This is not to say 100% of the Russian are as he describes, but this is the mentality of the vast majority of the people.I lived there 7 years.I of course had friends who hated Putinism and were horrified with what was happening and were really active in society to reverse the trends. But they were a tiny minority! I even knew very great intellectuals who liked autocracy and defended it with philosophical fervor! This is their mentality!Sadly It is true!

  • Autocracy is great, as long as the leader is a good person. But it is a disaster when you mix an autocratic system and a megalomaniac. For the long term it's a system that can't succeed because good people are a lot rarer than the opposite.

  • "they don't like that stuff."

the world is thinking... except for this guy.

  • No, he just knows the russian mentality.
