Come on, guys! This is what a rock/pop band should be. The Byrds were absolutely great. And when they decided to mix Dylan's songs with thier own brand of electic phsycodelic rock, it made for a completely different type of music. What a great band. I played that Mr. Tamborine Album so much, the scratches had scratehes on them.
Definitely live vocals here because you can hear Crosby say 'Whoa!' as the solo begins. Gene's accent comes out, too, with loads of expression in his voice.
@darling67 I often see you posting on this and other Byrds tunes, and I've probably answered a post of yours about this song, but I thought I was the only person in the world who though this was the greatest song ever. Other people I played this to in the 80's was like ho hum. I cant understand it but thanks to youtube I'm know I'm not he only one!
Born in '58, and was just a kid when this came out. But I remember the false eyelashes, the wig-lets, the Go-Go boots, the dancers (man, do I remember the dancers!). Keep in mind, it wasn't all like this. We waded through a lot of AM radio musical GARBAGE in the 60's and 70's to get to The Beatles, Beach Boys , The Association and The Byrds!!!
June 3, 1946: Happy Birtdhay to the late Michael Clarke!! Michael drummed with The Byrds from their inception until 1967, then played with The Flying Burrito Brothers until 1973. Michael died of liver failure on December 19, 1993; he was only 47 years old. ☺
yes you're so right, fucked and born too late. let me resume: you missed the 60's, 70's,8o's, andwhen you were born (90's) it was over. some people just aren't lucky ha aha
I could do with a few less go-go girls a lot more Gene Clark!! The vocals are live, without question. And they sound just beautiful!! I think I played my Byrd albums so much I burned holes in them. This line up was THE lineup!!
The girls look fantastic, but did we ever think go-go dancing was cool? The words "clunky" and "ridiculous" come to mind every time I see these segments from Shindig, Hullabaloo and other sixties shows. But then again, anything that gets girls tossing their legs in the air can't be bad.
@BETSYSUEU Chris Hillman -- he was into country music. Later on he was the leader of The Desert Rose Band -- and what a gorgeous man!!! Look up a song called One Step Forward (Two Steps Back) or She Don't Love Nobody. :-)
@funforalgernon Oh, yeah. When I was a dumb 12-year-old kid Gene would come over to my neighbors house to jam (in Bonner Springs, Kansas) We used to make howling noises outside their window while they played...little did I know
This is about as near as you get to a perfect pop song. Gene's vocals are fantastic, great harmonies, Roger's two lead guitar breaks are killer and it's as tight as a gnat's backside. How they performed this without laughing at the dancers is beyond me and those go-go cages are looking dangerously fragile, but what a song and what a time piece. Thanks.
@casjr2171 You are correct, sir. Lada Edmund, Jr. was the "Hullabaloo A-Go-Go Girl in the Cage." She has recently resurfaced by the internet at ladastedmund(dot)com. She has a Facebook page which I hope you'll join.
On the weekend of July 9th, she will be making her first public appearance at the Super Mega Show in New Jersey. I'm her PR Rep, vist her site and write to me. Thanks.
Yea, the real show is the girl on the left at 00:26 into the dancing. Talk about showing enthusiasm at your job! Girls today are to slutty and usually fat. Even the "really" fat ones think they are sexy and wear tight clothes or have their guts or asses hanging out like they are so hot or something.
That Go-Go dancer on the floor left must be the lead dancer. She's the only one that does the whole routine during the solo right. Girls danced so cute back then. Now they all dance like they're doing it with the Invisible Man.
Sounds as though the vocals are live but the instrumental is from the album. Still, this is proof of what a terrific singer Gene Clark was, and how good the original group could sound when at their best.
It's a sheer DELIGHT to hear the actual LIVE audio track here, rather than the other posts of this video that use the studio recording. Gene had a FANTASTIC voice, and for my money he should have REMAINED as the band's lead singer and songwriter..but I guess that McGuinn had other ideas about that! :(
Probably the greatest use of the word probably ever in the history of PoP Music, and Gene isn't probably the Greatest western pop musical lorist he IS!
Yes! So much depends upon that three syllable word. He could have written "I know that" or " I think that " or something else we might expect, but chose "prob-a-bly" instead --- and that, not probably, IS the genius of Gene!
My favourite 60s band and I`m 23 :)))) Born in `88

actually they are alot thinner and less shapely and healthy-looking as girls looked in the 1960s.
But I agree with you that girls from the 1960s were alot more charming than are most girls nowadays.
