Dolphins/Delphinidae are not considered a "sub-family" because it's hard to determine which came first, the dolphin or the whale. Also, they and whales/cetacea are of two different orders, similar but different. Like man/apes/primates/monkeys all share similarities but are ordered differently. However, Orcas are the largest dolphins on the planet.

I don't see how calling them a whale could be insulting seeing as how whales are majestic, intelligent and beautiful creatures. As for the word killer, they are killers; not in the immoral sense we humans apply to it, they're not *murderers* but they are killers. Orcas are impressively efficient predatorial killers.
