  • Lets get the best band ever ever back together!!!! Like my Page!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this song, + the book siddhartha = wow. xD

  • yeah.. i have every album. x)

  • Okay, I luv this song, LUV IT! But, what does it mean? Poetry, talks to my heart, etc. Does anyone know what it means???

  • 3:59 Prague...my city!!! :D

  • finally! looked for this song for over a decade... thanks to youtube! this song just has a different dimension n unique sound which blew my mind in the mid nineties n still does even now. aaah reminds me of nada surf- popular, although slower,...men those were the days!

  • who would need their greatest hits??? If you are a fan you have probably had every album. I am sure they made it special, but really?

  • This song glides and shimmers and talks directly to my heart.

  • Michael Stipe is my favourite rapper

  • This one is for Tim Tebow.

  • This is poetry. Poesia...

  • @Finduskkk Poetry at its best.

  • I have to say this was my first exposure to Patti Smith. Heard the album when I was 10 and thought "Hmm, who is the strange woman singing on the recording and in the video?" Years later I found out and love Patti's work even more than REM! But I have to thank them for making me aware of Patti in the first place.

  • Patti Smith received an honorary degree and sang at my graduation. Beautiful.

  • great song! still gives me chills

  • are they one of the biggest band from one of the funny countries? ;)

  • Yes, with Patti Smith !

    great song

  • One of the greatest songs from one of their best (my #2) albums. Thank you for the memories. 8 shows and growing up with your music. Lifes Rich Pageant was my first purchase in high school and after quickly purchasing their previous works, I was an REM fan for life. They are and will always be my favorite band.

  • @wowbobwow37 ... think i first saw them in 84 and believe it or not I still have some old vinyl. Totally with you on the REM fab for life and favorite band ever. Watching the vids here always moves me like no other band ever will.

  • obviously 8 people came here by mistake

  • PATTI SMITH + R.E.M. ....I feel empowered

  • i so bloody love this band, no one at all has ever topped it yet, blue october has of course leveled with it, but i mean, you listen to one of rem songs, any song threw ear phones, you close your eyes, and... your in the music, you are so in the music.. they will never be beaten, and will never be forgotton, r.i.p.r.e.m.

  • It's after 0:40 that the emotion really kicks in.

  • Beautiful. A friend sent me this song when I was in hospital recovering from a suicide attempt. He wrote on the cover: "You might have left the world without hearing something this beautiful. Don't risk it again."

  • I love this song, New Adventure is my first R.E.M album. 1996 feels like yesterday.

  • Have always been a fan of this song, with great guest vocals from Patti Smith. Was surprised last night, looking at my copy of the new Greatest Hits, that this single, does not make an appearance. So great to have some unreleased songs from them, but for me it is NOT the definitve Greatest Hits, as that would be a complete chronicle of all singles!!!! As for the filmclip, awesome!!!!

  • wow what an impact this band on so many other bands and us simple folk ....sad for the split but glad also, how can a band top their peak!! they did the right thing,,,,,,thankyou REM for years of your best xx

  • R.E.M we will miss you, dont think iv ever heard a bad rem song in ma 27 years

  • GRANDE ...................................

  • Scottland . . . Trainways?

  • @MultiNanoc That was probably Prague.

  • sexy voice = michael stipe

  • mitico, niente altro

  • Jesus...REM are gone,. but always and forever willl remain this masterpiece..like this song is...and so on...i love this band..no other band i love ...REM FOREVER

  • god, I listened to this song over and over again. I guess I was seventeen or so.

  • A great song-one of their best-with Patti Smith's great voice

  • "Look up, what do you see?

All of you and all of me

    Fluorescent and starry

    Some of them, they surprise"

  • I like that song, is my favorite of REM; the song is a Philosophieof life...congratulations from México...

  • Always find it strange that when people rank their favorite R.E.M. albums, that this isn't there, more often than not. Never got the credit it deserved critically, but came out at a time when music was moving on, and the manufactured crap that spawned the Z factor was gaining momentum. Much as I love them, from Up on they went into a steady decline album-wise. Even then, they still produced music infinitely better than many bands could ever hope to achieve...

  • Gracias por esta canción!! es triste pero una de las mas hermosas que escuché en mi vida!!! Gracias!

  • I bought this album when i was working in Shetland and played it to death as this song blew me away with Patti's vocals

  • is there a song of rem who are bad ? i don't think

  • @ESA601 I agree! I was just thinking today how I don't think R.E.M. should ever have split, because they still have potential. They can't make a completely bad album even if they want to. Probably it's just me because I'm a die-hard fan, so it's not an objective opinion, but I'm glad there's others like me out there.

  • questa canzone è il vero capolavoro dei rem, i am from italy!!! W R.E.M 4eveeeeeeeeer

  • It's a simple formula; the better music, the less views...

  • @ondra159 true...

  • @ondra159 kinda like bad food taste good

  • @ondra159 yeah thats why analpain only have 400 views there just soooooooooo good! :)

  • This is the best of REM , what don't you get?

  • so i had never seen this video before, loved the song but when i started it i didnt want to watch the video becauase i had my own thoughts that went along with the song. upon viewing the video, it is more beautiful than i could ever have imagined

  • ¿¿ Añadido a FAVORITOS. ??

  • STIPE IS MY TYPE !

  • Absolutely magnificent song.

  • The lyrics to “E-Bow the Letter” were never intended to be a song. It was a letter that Stipe had written!

  • This song gives me goosebumps <3

  • Eh..Zakochałem się przy tym kawałku.

  • When I first saw this video, which was also the first time i heard this song, I cried because it was so beautiful.

  • This video have some hard lonelyness energy.

    Such adorable artpiece.

  • R.i.p r.e.m

Wonderful song. One of my favourites.

  • @dumplingsistasty Oh come on! Legend never die!

  • @luciealie So very true. But i had a fit of nostalgic pain when i thought about the fact that the music of REM has been close to me all my life (more or less). They have been one of them bands that just kept producing great music.

You are right ... their music should not rest in peace but listened to and enjoyed =)

  • Not one of the greatest videos of all time, but definitely one of the greatest songs of all time.

  • Masterpiece

  • Que chido que se separaron dejando cosas tan chingonas detrás de ellos, debe ser muy satisfactorio para cualquiera voltear atrás y ver un maremoto de cosas increíbles.

  • @poughkeepsiejohn1 You do know Stipe is gay?

  • @cmjones83 Don't worry... its ok... you can calm down, he won't hurt you.

  • CAN'T BELIEVE THEY ARE NOT A BAND ANYMORE.... WHO WILL TURN MY DREAMS INTO MUSIC, NOW???

  • @Okurimono73 R.E.M. will always exist for fans!

  • @Okurimono73 ONE of the best comment i have ever read. Not a REM fan but I can see why they had a effect on so many people when i heard this song for the first time. i was going through depression at the time i cried for like hours .now 10 years later iam alot better . i suppose i can thank REM FOR THAT.

  • @Okurimono73 Were REM ever an ACTUAL band?

  • @raceyboy yes

  • @Okurimono73 The Joy Formidable, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, The XX, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffitti, the Decemberists, etc.

  • Love this song. Love Georgia-R.E.M. This is sad :((

  • Apart from Losing My Religion this is one of my favourite REMsongs of all time. REM RULE!!!

  • I can actually see Michael Stipe and Patti Smith getting married.

  • nice songs, nice people, nice band!

  • River is just a bright light still.

  • R.I.P friends

  • por favor no se separen...!!!!! dios

  • thanks guys xx

  • I always forget how good New Adventures in Hi-Fi is.

  • I'm privileged that I got to see them live, once. Thunderbird Stadium, Vancouver, BC on August 29, 2003.

It was a warm, not muggy, Summer night. I saw a firefly whiz by, as the concert went into the night. Saw Thom Yorke sing along for the last two songs of the encore: E-Bow The Letter and It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).

One of the best concerts I've seen... Thanks for the memories, guys.

  • I will miss you REM!

  • allways me off a pixie song..but luv it to bits.

  • I just want to say thank you.

It's one of the saddest news in this world called music, but unfortunelly, everything has an end.

Thank you again for such a great piece of art.

  • Thank you to you all!, i will miss you!! <3

  • Thank you for all this great jears,bye.....

  • I met my husband at an REM concert. Thank you and goodbye, guys.

  • Barely any comments about them breaking up!Crazy. What a band.Personally I think all the politics took away their creativity. They were at their best when you didn't know what they were talking about. We all know what he's feeling here even when we don't know the exact meaning of the lyrics.Amazing band. They'll be missed, this song and album were the soundtrack to a bad period in my life, but those days seem better in retrospect when I listen to this. Thanks guys.

  • @DustyAndPistolPete Thumbs up to every word in your comment. 1996 was some F***ed up time, and I remember listening to NAIHF everyday for the entire 96-97 winter time.. it was the best music I ever heard. Its a sad time now, to learn about the breakup. But I guess after all, it was expected.......

  • There were days and days of migraine .. This song mademe endure all the pain every day ...

I had broke up with my girlfriend ... But REM helped me overcome all the bad days ..

  • I love you, and I'm going to remember you guys for my entire life... and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening , and good night!!! :'(

  • A friend of mine was playing the chord progresion from the intro this morning. I knew REM, I even got the album, I was singing it in my head and I couldn't remember the name of the song... Oh well... got it now...

  • R.E.M. + Patti Smith = my teenage dream come true! And quite a few years down the line, it's still absolutely brilliant.

  • 15 years are over. But I Love this song like the first day!

    A Song for the eternity!

  • "My loss, and here we go again"

  • ebow

  • "I SAID YOU'RE NAME>>>>>>"

  • my fav REM song too

  • 6 people are from the Underworld.

  • I was looking for that song since like forever.

  • The dislike bar is like Lady gaga's penis:

Small, and it shouldn't be there.

    Bye from Italy.

  • @Findus813 lmao. i didn't know she had a penis. and i dont even care if its not true. still hilarious :D

  • STIPE IS KING...

  • no me canso de escuchar esta cancion!! la musica es simplemente espectacular.. me transporta!

  • Just beautiful song..:-(

  • my favourite REM song....love it

  • just perfect.

  • This song is perfect, I love this kind of sad songs

  • You can tell this is a good song by the way the dislike bar looks like the tip of a cigarette.

  • without the E-bow this song would be completely different, peter buck is a great guitar player.... and the Letter is of the best songs REM has ever made, on my top ten list... if you can make a list, there so many great songs.... it´s quite unbelievable for a band to have such a high standard for so long period of time.... i am in awe

  • Think parts of it were filmed in and around Phoenix AZ.

  • Shame it song mentions "sadness and sorrow" - but otherwise it's a great sad and mysterious song

  • Masterpiece.

  • BEST REM SONG EVER

  • I'd love this in 720p or 1080p :)

  • BEATIFULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

  • madoi...la loro musica ti avvolge

  • One of REM's finest....hands down

  • My favourite REM song

  • Clearly 6 people had ear plugs in when playing this ..........

  • Lovely song, brings back a lot of old memories for me.

  • R.E.M has always been one of my favorites...this song and this album is what I would call an island album. If I could only have a few albums stranded with me on an island this would be one of them.

  • there`s patti smith in this song

  • This song gives me the same feeling as when I'm driving in a city at night alone. That time in the early morning when the sun has not yet risen and the streets are still and calm. Such a great song.

  • You are so right!

  • Well, at least we know this wasn't written for Joaquin Phoenix. If that were the case, it would be a terrible rap song.

  • Before the turbulence and upheaval that has occurred in my life, there was this song, excellent...never abandon ideals...

  • i m not english speaker , forsome reason i like it very much

  • William S Burroughs died at 83....don't know if that is a reference.

  • "i wear my own crown of sadness n sorrow and never knew tomorrow would be so strange"

  • Simple but nice use of the e-bow.

  • never really understood this song, but i like it alot

  • Great song,one of my all time favourites from R E M

  • One of the BESTever):):)

  • This song is too Beautiful

From the instruments composition, to the lyrics and the video

    Its just a Modern classic

    Rem's originality Never fades

    I Love you guyz

  • I think what I like about this video is that MS gives the impression he means what he's singing - it's more than just a performance to him. He's said elsewhere that this is one of his favourite REM tracks. Mine too.

  • pretty wonderful singing from Patti Smith in this

  • esta es una joya mundial de realidad

  • I first heard this song when I was about 11 or so, It's been my favourite R.E.M song since then. This was my first time watching the music video and I can certainly say it met my expectations, maybe even exceeded them.

  • Exactly. And I even didn't know that half of it was shot in my hometown Prague.

  • For me a master-piece...dark,deep,touching!!

  • Los Angeles has never looked prettier.

  • I think that it is also Prague, which looks beautiful here

  • R.E.M. "E-bow The Letter" was filmed in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic.

  • @nicholsjoshua15 me and the guy below u felt as tho it was shot in LA

  • @nicholsjoshua15 R u sure that all of it was filmed there? I don't think that Prague is that mountainous.

  • @nicholsjoshua15 Not complete. Only the Parts with Patti in the Train and some Shots

  • @nicholsjoshua15 Part of this video ;)

  • @nicholsjoshua15 : no way mate>>>

  • @miounio not all of it

  • @nicholsjoshua15 When I live!!! ;-) F*cking pride of this video.

  • @nicholsjoshua15

IN SOVIET Cheska, Pague films you !

  • This is one of those songs a lot of people overlooked when it first came out and I actually feel a bit sad for those who did because they definately missed R.E.M.s best song for one, and one of the best of the 90's for another. Its pure genius and the electronic bow just sets the mood perfectly for such a melancholic masterpiece.

  • Who do I have to pay WHAT AMOUNT to even get a 240P playback of this or any video to play continuously? God the US sucks on internet.

  • not here to anoint you............

  • nice I imagine myself on a predawn morning riding home on the Greyhound bus

  • written for the wonderful River Phoenix. amazing.

  • @MarlaVed So many good songs written for him, "Transcending" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers was written for Phoenix as well. Both of them amazing tunes. Both of them give me the chills.

  • Ebow ftw those things are mean as! use em on my bass myself :D

  • @DavidsJeffs yeah they are exspensive as heck though :( cant find one under $100

  • @idontcare2349 i paid $135nz on ebay, there around $260nz in stores here so that was a steal. keep an eye out

  • @DavidsJeffs musicians friend has them cheap too but i cant affored more then $50 at the moment haha

  • @DavidsJeffs yeah, if you know how to use one theyre great. i cant seem to get a hang of mine..

  • @losingmyreligion6767 oh yeh? on bass they're really hard to use. gotta hold em perfect, so can be tricky. on gats they have the string grooves so should not be too bad for that, comes with instruction manual, or look up tutorials on youtube, cuz once u get the hang of it you will probably never stop using it :)
