@mrichman For these videos we used a Shure KSM27 and Electrovoice Raven. 3-5" from the grill, each mic placed around the edge of the speakers dustcap.
Can you please show a good demo of the combo mark 5 on channel three. Reason i ask, is that in a sense you are clearly showing here that the mark 5 combo "sucks" big time on channel three. As all demos and elsewhere show the head replacing the combo when the channel 3 is tested. Proving it sucks big time as its an open back etc etc, which channel three actually hates once the gain is turned up. Which again, shows that the combo sucks big time and has a channel 3 that is only half useable.
@haggertysmusic I see you have mic ed the combo, but all the combo videos have the mark 5 sitting on what looks like a rectifier cabinet? I'm so sure that the combo "is" plugged into that aswell. Im sure you wouldn't just use that 2x12 cab as an amp stand eh, lol. The tone and everything about the amp would change "big time". I used to have the same cab. The open back kills the channel three drive tones no end. Or, can you put up a combo only channel three demo and tone settings that work good?
@nznaturopath Actually we did just use the 2x12 as an amp stand. :-) In those two videos I referenced, the 2x12 cabinet was not plugged in at all, and you can clearly see the microphones in front of the combo.
I own this amp and its amazing, i have watched all the videos on youtube pretty much and yours definitely is the best. I've even learned some things i didnt know about it, thats just how versatile this amp is, its no wonder Petrucci uses 3 of them. It was also nice to hear this amp played the way most people are going to use it.
@thrasher10000 Cool man, thanks for watching! We did these videos with a Shure KSM 27 and EV Raven into a Presonus Firestudio and Pro Tools. Our newest videos are recorded with a Royer R-121 and True Systems P-SOLO Ribbon Pre.
is that a stiletto cab? i was also wondering if you could do a demo of the mesa boogie roadster..share settings...maybe add a overdrive as a boost also if you could do a drop tuned/HEAVY demo on like the modern and vintage channel that'd be great appreciate it.
@Bigmik3031 Thanks for watching! I would like to do a video for the Roadster, I'm just not sure when we'll get to it. I'm sure it will happen eventually though. I think a Roadster vs Dual Rectifier would be a good comparison video too because those two amps have a different voicing.
The cabinet used in this video was the 4x12 Rectifier cabinet.

My pleasure. now that you mention it, I'd love to see/hear a vid comparing the Mark V's Mark I, 2c+ and IV modes to the original amps all through the same cab... and seeing how close you could get 'em sounding... with your playing, sound recording, settings knowhow etc that would be answer a lot of questions for the many folks asking the question, (myself included). :)
@Guitarsthatkill Agreed, that would be sweet. I have a Mark I reissue at home, and could get my hands on a Mark IV. The IIC+ would be the problem... If you have one, we will film it!!!
@haggertysmusic I'd love to help...alas I only have the V...and I live in the UK too so that theoretical shipping would be horrific also.... lol Comparison vids of the MarkV/1 MarkV/IV though in the meantime 'til a 2C+ turns up would be killer though in the meantime....!!
If we could see how close the other two models are, it could speak quite well for a logical guess as to how the 2c+ might stand up... :)
@haggertysmusic express! there are a lot of good tones in that little box, it may not be as versatile as a mark V of course but... definitely worth its own video.
@gdomeier Two mic's. A Shure KSM27 and an Electrovoice Raven. Both mic's on axis, probably 6" from the speaker. KSM off center, Raven almost to the outer edge of the speaker. The amp was very loud in the room. Your certainly getting power tube coloration in these videos.
I just love the fact you play Petrucci so much. It justifies the tone of the amp very much...

@nznaturopath We have two videos with the combo on channel 3. The Mark V 6L6 vs EL34 tube comparison and the Mark V Speaker Comparison (V30 vs C90).

Nice! I just got the Mk V yesterday. Do you need to turn it up the Output knop very loud to get the tone in Channel 3?

Great demos great playing. I prefer the sound without the eq!!! Less sterile. Funny with my mesa studio preamp I prefer it with the eq...
