Mainstream DOES NOT mean popular. It also doesn't mean doing what everyone else is doing. A mainstream band is one that purposely fits itself into a certain style to become recognized and liked. If I say I don't like a band because they're mainstream, I don't mean they're too popular, I mean I don't like them because I can tell they structured their songs to sound a specific way so that people will like them.
