He's right, the cost of DDR2 is cheap enough that you might as well, and running 64bit OS is going to use more ram. Plus with 8vs4 gigs, size beats 4vs5 latency. I run smooth and stable with only 2gigs on 32bit OS, but that doesn't mean I don't want 4 gigs. Just like if you were running 4 gigs on 64bit. Eventually you will want 8.

I use win7 as a fulltime HD media center/gaming/video encoding computer with no issues other than new windows DRM.

Nonsense, that's not what they say, they just ADVICE to use 8, which I think is a dumb advice, because even with the 64 bit version you'll never reach the limit of 4GB if all you do is some Office, browsing and even some basic Photoshop. You should also never buy something you might need 2 years from now, it's wasting money, because prices always go down.

No, it means you need to get a 64 bit capable processor.

Which does require a new motherboard.

However, I don't recommend switching. Mainly due to the drivers. Since there are so few drivers for 64 bit computers, you have to go look for compatible hardware. Not fun.

I have a computer that stably runs Vista 64 and 7 (again, 64), but neither system recognizes some hardware I'd like to install, because there are no drivers in 64 bit. Maybe you don't have this problem, I don't really care.

yes most OS's are 32bit, but with a 64bit os and compatible CPU almost all MOBO's are capable of holding well in excess of 8gb of ram. granted 4gb+ ram sticks are usually buffered and wont run in some boards, 4x2gb cards will work in about anything.

Actually if you have a newer PC they actually hold up to 12 GB of ram. And as for the whole driver thing that isn't an issues because Windows 7 basically is XP as well, it will run any program in 32 bit XP mode automatically if it doesn't work in Windows 7.

oh and your don't NEED 8 GB of RAM you could easily run it on 4 but Winows 7 won't run at full power, it will run more like Vista. Also Core i7 cpu's work best with sets of 3 ram (taking up to 6 total) no matter weather its 1 GB or 2 GB sticks you should always install 3 at a time. Plus 4 GB sticks are already coming (not sure of a release date) which will drive down the price of 2 GB sticks to almost nothing.

You don't need it but when it comes to running non-windows 7 or non- 64bit program that does suck up a lot of ram due to the fact it is basically running XP at the sametime.

Even if it did that is almost standard levels of ram now (maybe no laptops not sure on that front) but Core 2 due hold up to 8 and core i7 up to 12 or 24 if the new ram coming out soon.
