@hollabackitsobi funny I thought you said modern era. Cuz if you went with the last 10 years, florida is #8 on the wins with 67 and boise state is even ahead of them with 108 wins. So with your logic boise state must be better then florida;)
ND is going to 3-8 This yr. They should have never fired Charlie Weis. Weis should have never used the West Cost Offense and switched to 3-4 defense. Brian Kelly is not the answer. There is many coaches better than him. There are going to lose to Purdue Michigan USC STanford Air Force Michigan Michigan State. Pittsburg and Boston College all losses!
Lol @ the bama fans trashing the Irish...they have had a rough patch yeah, but please remind me...how many times has bama beat ND? 1 time in 5 games, and the bear could never beat em...ND's all time record against the SEC is 42-32-5. If you want too talk about the history, don't use the BCS era as a crutch, don't pick at parts of the history, talk of the history as a whole.
I remember this game. The "ol ball coach Spurrier" was totally out coached by Holtz. Holtz eventually went to South Carolina, where the previous coach left the place totally bare but within two years Holtz had SC in a bowl game and they beat The Ohio State University. The next year they once again beat The Ohio University (and we now know how The Ohio State University qualified for bowls. ) Spurrier replaced Holtz, who left him with the cupboard full and Spurrier could not do what Holz did.
Notre Dame could lose every game for the next 10 years and would still be better than every other program. It's just an un-equalled tradition. Irish will always be #1!
i think everyone should know this. Florida never scheduled a game outside of the south after this season. Thats right. They haven't left the south since '91.
@talktothechalk Are you sure you were at the game? When USC used that cheatin' Bush (both on and off the field as it turned out) push the Irish were weaing their home blue jerseys no green on them anywhere..
check out that water bottle thrown at jerome bettis at 4:05, i assume a bitter fla fan upset at spurriers lack of half time adjustments. this game was lou holtz owning spurrier. fla was so overrated that year. what a game.
Spurrier was so frustrated about not being able to punch it in while in the red zone. And Bettis would not be stopped this day. I would love to see this matchup somewhere down the road again. Go Gators!
One can only hope Notre Dame will be back but have to wait and see what Kelly can do. Glad Chuckles is gone. That fat lard was only concerned when the next shipment of Twinkies were coming in to South Bend.
One of my favorite bowl games ever, and I'm not a fan of either team. Great matchup, and I just remember Bettis going off! Very impressive game for #6.
This game is Exhibit A of why you need to finish drives with seven points, not three. UF should have been up 24-7 or 28-7 at half. Then ND would have been forced to throw instead of pounding the daylights out of UF's defense with the Bus.
Not intentionally. But I remember that game well and the Gators did leave some points on the field in that 1st half. No knock on ND, they owned the 2nd half and deserved the win.
the best part about this game was that after hearing for a month that ND had no business being on same field as the gators, we looked great n holtz out coached spurier. also seeing clips on tv of the post-game victory party, thrown by shane matthews p's, being set-up in a new orleans hotel. 'boy this party really died' -lloyd christmas
I personally would have rather seen a Penn State vs. Florida Sugar Bowl. They crushed ND in November and deserved a shot at the Gators that year. Although they would have probably beat the hell out of UF as well, as they were the hottest team closing the '91 season.
The fact that Tennessee already played ND effectively forced the PSU/TEN, ND/FLA matchups. However, a UT/ND rematch would have been interesting to watch considering their classic matchup earlier in the season.
Im tired of hearing about the gay-tors they had a great year, but the Irish will be back and remember wher urban learned to really coach was in south bend
He actually started out at Cincinnati, and learned his coaching philosophies from Woody Hayes. Then he went to Colorado State, and THEN got the call to Notre Dame.
What is the definition of respectable. ND is already back to respectable, but it may take a while fore them to get back to national title contention, if that is what you mean. Still, I was at that game and it was a great game\, if you were an Irish fan. Lou Holtz's best coaching performance at ND other than the Miami game in 1988
It's 2008, not 1988. The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost caught the last train out of town the day the music died, and the music died a long time ago.
they are not respectable they have one bowl win since this game how id that respectable they lost to SYRACUSE stop it!!!!! i have this game on tape tho i remember what lou said about the waiter in the restaurant after the game "difference between ND and cheerios, cheerios belong in the bowl" im a cane fan but i love lou holtz
@FightOn2VICTORY Yeah, all those amazing leather helmet championships. Just amazing! Go Gators, winningest program in college football in the past 20 years (AKA the MODERN era...quit living in the past!).
The Weis hiring was the death sentence for ND football. A fat fuck QB coach who never played football, never a head coach at any level and by all accounts a Bill Parcells drone. His only expertise seems to be recruiting and which calzones to have delivered to the Gug. If he is not fired after this season, something is rotten, but I love Notre Dame football more than anything else on Earth. I want to see the Irish play a game like this, how much goddam longer do I
One of the best examples of why Holtz was truly a great coach. In game adjustments, halftime changes... and ND beats a team thats better than them... why can't Weis do this just once?
I've always wondered why ND doesn't go to wearing the kelly green jerseys at home and these types of away jerseys w/ the green numbers...Not that there's anything wrong w/ the current uni's but, I'd like to see them wear more green and gold, rather than blue and gold...
As bad as that season was in the Holtz years, they could have beaten any team that year, with the exception of Miami or Washington. They belonged in that bowl. Holtz schooled Spurior.
I think part of it is , that Lou Holtz (if given time) can outcoach a lot of great ones. This was jan. 1st,1992, they played florida state in november of 1993.
rick mirer?? this was forever known to me for 4 reasons. 1 - Steve Spurrier complaining before the game that he wanted to play a higher ranked team. 2 - The green numbered jerseys. 3 - Jerome Bettis running thru Florida. 4 - The 'cheerios' game. for rick mirer highlights, see his last home game versus Penn State, in the snow.
I was at the game. One of Lou's best Coaching victories. At the end of the first half, the Irish had the ball and ran several straight running plays, mostly with Bettis. Our line completely moved the Gators D line. The half ended, Holtz pointed to the locker room and led the team. The second half was complete domination. FL line didn't know what hit 'em. A Florida fan at the half said to me, "Get ready for the blow out." I smiled and agreed.
I had forgetten about this Florida smackdown but it reminds be of when Tommy Fraser and Nebraska ran untouched for several big runs in the 96 Fiesta Bowl.
you're tripping, the SEC wasn't nearly good then? Alabama went 11-1, Tennessee was uber talented 9-3, Georgia had a either a 9-3/10-2 season. I call silliness on what you say. I've seen more S.E.C. with better records since the 12 team conference, then when they just had 10 teams.
You're thinking of the 1992 regular season. This bowl game was on January 1, 1992 to end the 1991 season. Florida was SEC champions and lost only one other game, to Syracuse, that season.
Florida beat FSU 14-9 in the swamp that year. Our defense batted down FSU's 4th and goal pass for Casey Weldon to win the game. 92 was the year youre thinking of.
Yes that is Al Michaels, Frank Gifford and Dan Dierdorf, the longtime "Monday Night Football" announcers, doing a college game. I think, to date, this is the last college game Al Michaels has announced.

Florida didn't have a chance to win the title, the 2 teams ranked ahead of them both won their bowl games. Oh and both starting inside linebackers were hurt for this game.
It wasn't some random FB breaking long runs, it was freakin Jerome Bettis. It would help to have your starters in to begin with. Yes, backups should step up, but they're backups for a reason.
