I Googled it and it's true- cork *was* used in the space shuttle to insulate the fuel tanks. Oh wait. It cracked. I've yet to find out how that's good. But as it's unrelated to the main use of cork, perhaps we better ignore that. In wine, you won't get TCA infections from screwcaps (or synthetic cork, if you must have the ceremony). If you're worried about the environment, start with the big issues first- drive less. Even if you booze a LOT, 1 screwcap a day hardly makes a difference.
