@TheBanDoe i was just thinking the same thing before i read your comment. maybe if we knew where they were playing in the video we could determine whether it's feasible that he'd be there.
i personally prefer hella when they were a duo but that's cos i get stcuk in my ways of certain things that do things for me like hold your horse is so i'm sure i wud hav been dissapointed by nething that came after. they r still fing epic
I completely disagree. Having been a hella fan for years of the duo and seeing the 5 piece hella. The 5 piece band is different but still rips and the new players make the intensity ever more prevalent. Sure, have two math rock band mated synchronized is impressive but hella did it with 5 no sweat.
I agree with that on the whole but I think this song title kind of makes sense. The opening to it feels like an the rhythms played for a ghost dance. You just gotta know music before you make assumptions.
zach hill said in an interview once that Christian Vander is his favorite drummer of all time. so im guessing the "ghost dance" part has something to do with magma. still clueless tho as to how. this is a kickass video tho
Zach Hill has the worst drumming technique of most famous drummers. Everything from the position of his kit to his posture is poor...but GOD DAMN that guy can freaking drum up a storm! Its not just his drumming thats crazy, thats a lot of counting that he's gotta do as well! These guys are incredible.
do you want all drummers to be exactly the same? Because i would rather have creativity as opposed to bland uniformity. Thats why i dislike most technical musicians, they call it "professionalism" when they use little or no originality. Zach hill is all originality, and his playing is awesome.
The way your kit is set up doesnt change the way you think about music and your creativity levels. And plus, "technical musicians" (or musicians who spend thousands of dollars in their life to go to school and learn how to play their instrument) dont call it "professionalism".
While I agree there is no "professional setup", and if there was, it wouldn't matter much to me. However, I really do wish he'd fix his posture, I'd hate for one of my favorite drummers' career to be cut short by a bad back....
i think its funny that no one on youtube has posted any videos of themselves covering Hella drum parts. I can play most of this song except for the main drum part in the first verse, i cant figure it out at all!
if by taste, you mean delicacy and not going all out, then youre clearing judging Zach Hill on his performance only in Hella. if you want to hear his 100% listen to the album with Mick Barr called Shred Earthship. if you want to hear delicate, you can find more subtle drumming on The Ladies album he did with Rob Crow, or the Marnie Stern album. Hella is the perfect mix of delicate and crazy drumming.
Hella is better than King Crimson for me. I own all King Crimson albums and all Hella albums and I've listened to all very much. Hella is just amazing....maybe I am biased because I am a drummer?
Biased because you're a drummer? Without Bill Bruford, drumming wouldn't be anywhere close to where it is now. Just because Bill doesn't go all out 100% of the time like Zach does doesn't make him a worse drummer by any means. Give Three of a Perfect Pair or Discipline another whirl and tell me if this guy would be able to come anywhere close to Bill Bruford's consistency and taste.
It makes me sad that they've fallen so far from their roots... This stuff is beautiful but Hella just keeps getting progressively worse and worse with each new album
oh wait, i see, i misread sorry. but not really. they're fast, and that drummer has got endurance like no other but really, nothing fancy, just sporadic and neurotic. they're one of my favorite bands.
lightning bolt is terrible, THEY don't stay in the groove, or for that matter, know what they're doing. hella is a legitimate noise band that is melodic and actually knows exactly what its doing at all times.

that is not messy at all.. it is just as orchestrated as anything they are doing now.. as for their heyday - they have yet to have their day. zach hill is going to be the next big thing in the music industry.
