cool video. it worked about the way i imagined, but i'm trying to think how i'd be able to use the same technique making a custom stereo boombox with just 8 inch woofers. it would be pretty hard getting inside a box through maybe a 7 inch opening on each side. maybe i could do it if used smaller tools. i was originally thinking of using 3D printing, but that's very expensive.
i DID learn that you lay up your 2 halves separate before joining though.
i want to make a engine cover for a boxster out of fiberglass , how does it hold up to heat and such things , wear n tear ...... also is the cost of materials for such a part.
Thanks for the heads up about using talc to prevent fiberglass itch. Before I used paper arm sleeves and gloves which get very hot in the Texas gulf coast climate where I keep my boat.
Love your vids!! I'm doing a fiberglass refinishing project on a sailboat (learning as I go). At what do point do you prefer to use PVA, and at what point do you prefer to use mold release paste and why? Do you ever use peel ply?

Why go thru all this work for speaker boxes ???, let alone ones that are going to be carpeted over ???. Couldn't you have just used a core, form, or male mold and not really worry about getting such a smooth finish ???. Also... do you think that metal screen material (common alum, SS, or bronze) could possibly be used as both a form and as a core for fiberglass projects ???. cool video, thanks.
Great Job on the vid, Used it this last summer to produce a set of Spats for my car. It's a newer model and not much for it. I sent them to a company in Taiwan to have an order produced in Carbon fiber. Have you tried working with Carbon fiber yet?
Just another comment to add to the one I made a while ago. I've been doing the same thing over in the UK; making the custom plug, making a mould from that (ended up being a 3 part mould) and then making the finished boxes. Having tried 'my own' way on a few things I've always ended up re-watching these videos and going 'ok, yeah that's a better way of doing it' so again, hats off to you fella!
You've really made some fantastic videos! very informative!
I've got a couple of questions if you don't mind; what type of resin do you use? epoxy or polyester? and also, for your moulds did you use normal gelcoat or 'tooling' gelcoat?
hi my mail ronoviedo@hotmail.com im building a 7 foot robot costume, i used styrofoam as a base, several layers of driveway paint and resin, after several weeks is alost ready well i want to think that, but now i want to make a mold of my almost finish project because i want fabricated another one, any idea??
Nice work, but.... I wouldn't have taken the glass up to the tops of the moulds in the first hits. I'd also have used a bit of clay (plasticine or wax) when the two moulds were clamped up, this would mean less trimming and less dust. But it was your job and not mine so hey ho! Fibrelass is an awesome material to wotk with it. I use it on a bigger scale than small mouldings like this though. People really dont realise how much time it takes even to master these skill. LOVE the video, if i was you id crank those babies out and ebay them or something lol. i do alot of fiberglass work too, im making a custom setup for my sisters 07 Charger trunk with dual 10"s right now. just curious...your resin seems about as viscous as water...how? what kind of resin are you using? ive tried a ton of different kinds and they are all about the consistancy of maple syrup :/...id love to know what kind of resin, make my life ALOT easier. thanks alot man! thumbs up!!!
I want to rebuild my concession trailer that burned down. I have the frame that is metal and want to make fiberglass walls for it. What way would you recommend to make the walls and how thick. I will also put windows in it. We are going to make this a project with a local high school. Any creative ideas would be appreciated.
@Timulch1 For the mold? I didnt use much, I like to keep the mold wall thin so it has allot of flex. If you talking about the part, it depends on the application.
What's wrong with the shape of it? Didn't you see the pic at 8:18? It is made that way so it will fit nicely into the corner of the trunk. It's not like it will be sitting in the middle of a living room.
@jonwhunt 'layers' is not a very good way of describing strength because there are hundreds of thicknesses available and hundreds of types. The one at the end of the vid with about 8mm wall thickness average. Its the sphereical shape of the box that multiplies its strength, it could handle many time that much.
@boober2008 I suggest you join a fiberglass help group, with a forum to get that answered accurately. You talking about a different type of mold then what im showing in these videos.
Ugh... Wax on the tape huh. Oh well... I know for next time now. After I masked, then laid Aluminum foil... I used a lil more masking tape inside the Aluminum foil where I wanted to make sure that certain spots where sealed-up to prevent Resin from being able to go thru. It worked for that purpose, but jus' a lil difficult to pull everything off of the initial hardened mold now. :S For a small project like mine, Which kinda Wax, where to commonly get it?
By the molds i meant the part that is molded to the contour of the space they are fitting in... How did u make those ? Pack your car full of clay to get the impretion ?
i wanna see a step by step on how to fiberglass a whole door pannel, i wanna do my 2 door 94 integra but have never done any fiberglassing before. i dont wanna add any extra skeepeks or anything, basically a stock fiberglass then painted door, if u could make a video like that it'd b a big help, nobody has one on youtube yet, ive looked. sweet video, thanks!
yes had a friend who made fiberglass moulds of stone sculptures and cast them with different concrete mixes that imitate stone. Would be no where near as strong.
great vid punk28186, i was just wondering if you do all your layering continuously or do you do say 3 layers let it dry and then do another 3. cheers mate!
hmmm i wonder who this is xD... IF you are using UNWAXED polyester resin then you can wait as long as you want between layers of fiberglass without doing anything in between. If you are using just the std waxed resins then you need to either layup your layers while the previous layer is still geling up or you need to sand away the wax that forms at the surface before your next layer. If the previous layer is still tacky its good to go. Layers will come apart over time if you dont follow this.
What kind of wax are you using there? Will that be able to help remove the tape away from the mould I'm making in the trunk. I use W d 40 but that did help removing the tape away.
How many fiberglass mat did you lay on that and how much resin did you use to do all that? I'm making a mold and I'm only lay down 5 layer so far. I was hoping it would be strong enough because this sutff is costing me alots of money.
It really depends on how thick your layers are, they come in a huge selection of weights(thicknesses). I put about a dozen 600g layers on these, but thats over the top, the smaller you make the walls the more tinier the sound is. 5 layers should be fine.
i really cant remember, maybe 20 hours for the mould only? The mould were not perfect as these are all finished carpeted. You can spend hundreds of hours easily on a mould to get it right.
Nice video man! To cut the fiberglass I use a bosch pmf 180, with a tile-cutting blade. this is an excellent tool because it vibrates instead of rotating, so glass dust does not go everywhere.
Not 100% but yes it should, as long as you coat and seal the inside with a 2pak paint or gelcoat/flowcoat. Actually im making an alcohol fuel tank for a car fuel conversion and I wouldnt mind knowing the long range effects of it too.
It's ok if you make sure you use a chemical resistant resin there are resistance tables on the scott bader website for all the different types of resin..
Others might be interested to know that they also sell grinders (air grinders usually) with adapters for a shop vac, really helps with all the itchy dust. I'm sure they even have vac adapters for regular grinders as well.
yo nice vid seriously, thanks for the talc tip, ima need that since im starting a project of my own, 2 12' fiberglass box, i didnt think i was gunna need so much fiberglasss, that i have i just ran out of resin, thanks for the vid nice job
hey this is rely gd im looking to do the same thing as i want to build my sub into my wheel arch to get it out of then way would it be possible to do the same thing with a gelcoat as i dont want to carpet mine ? cheers
I found these very useful. Great job! The mits on the sub enclosure was impressive. What is the talc on the hands for? And where is your respirator man?!
I had an extraction fan blowing fumes out and it was a windy day, but I usually wear a respirator. Talc clogs your pores and doesn't allow any fiberglass dust in to make you itch. I mention it in another video.
cool video. it worked about the way i imagined, but i'm trying to think how i'd be able to use the same technique making a custom stereo boombox with just 8 inch woofers. it would be pretty hard getting inside a box through maybe a 7 inch opening on each side. maybe i could do it if used smaller tools. i was originally thinking of using 3D printing, but that's very expensive.

Hey this is awesome work and I want to do this but where do you get the mold in the first place?!
I see that the final product fit snuggly in the trunk but where/or how did you make that original mold for the sub box?
Thanks
