The click you mention is actually the opposite of what you are using it for.
Its not supposed to be used to keep the lid open. Its there to prevent the lid form opening too much. You are supposed to just open the lid and then just let it rest against the little tabs.
That way you'd actually get the same effect that you'd get when you tilt the whole bottle.
I'm fairly sure Citadel Colour came in rounded pots before the hexagonal ones which are your earliest. I used to paint with a friend in the early 90s aroudnd 91/92 and he had quite a few colours, and I'm sure I remember him having pots that were more like the P3 pots than any others I've seen since.
A couple of facts and tips for your paints sir, adding water isn't the best thing you can do, if the paint dries and water is placed in it will most likely just make coloured water, so the thing i like to do is place them in the fridge for about 10 minutes, shake them up, and then back in the fridge for 10 minutes, depending on how dehydrated they arm, keeping them in a garage or ventilated room would be good too, also, the little thing on the lid - last paint is for the brush dropper, to save.
thank you for the video im just starting warhammer as a hobby and this video was really interesting to learn about the old paints and where to get them and to see the diffrent designed pots to the tiny ones you get now thanks agian great video have subcribed
Been painting since the late 80s and have Citadel Paints from then... yes, HAVE. They are flip-top lids with round bottles. They almost never dried out unless you got really messy with the paint and got it up inside the lid. Like I said, I still have a few bottles of paint from then left, Ghoul Flesh Grey, Brown Ink and some others! It's a shame they changed to such crap bottles in the mid-late 90s, so thanks for the Coat d'Arms tip!
i think it was a good informative vid on the history of the GW paints.... i personally prefere the second to last style because you dont have to clean them up so badly, just get rid of some of the dried paint is enough... the new pots are a pain to clean up
How would you suggest to keep the paints 'hydrated'?
I havent got my paints out for about 4 years but I got them out yesterday and many of them are bone dry... I put some water in and swirled it around but they are still not perfect.
I dislike the new pots. The black fliptops (previous gen) were the best. Sealed nicely.
I left a dozen paints behind at my parents place when I moved to Australia in 2006. I visited them not long ago and all the paints were still perfectly fine.
I will keep the old pots for new paints, just because it's so damn annoying how these new pots are.
Paint bottles @ 3:00 - If the lid is "painted" shut, run them under hot tap water and then use adjustable water pipe plyers and use those to twist off the lid. The hot water will cause the molecules of the plastic lid and paint to move away from one another, thus cracking the paint bond.
You can also get Cote d'Arms Armor Wash via the Privateer Press P3 paint line, which in itself is made by Cote d'Arms but unlike their regular lines of paints, it's made with a liquid pigment base as opposed to a solid. Love the stuff!
@ClockworkGecko Thanks! I had a hunch that p3 paints were made by Cote d'Arms. I have recently started switching over to p3 paints, and I use them almost exclusively now. I have heard nothing but good thigs about their washes. I'll have to pick some up.

@Clarkson24601 hmmm, that's interesting. t has been 9 months to a year sinc eI have ordered from them. Hopefully their are having some technical difficulties and their website will be up again.
I started painting in the late 80's, first paint set I bought was the Ork & Eldar box I still have the swooping hawk turquoise lol, I highly recommend the Coat D'arm over the latest GW paints, walk into a GW store one pot of foundation paint is £2.25, Coat D'arm is £1.53 from Maelstrom Games.
I love warhammer, but I hate Games Workshop. They really are pissing a hell of a lot of people off with the price increases. Not only do they increase the price, they decrease the amount of stuff you get with it. Fuck Games Workshop. Someone needs to take over the company and make it like it used to be.
@hitman287 i can tell you that now all standard paints are going the same way as the foundation/washes. even though there are very few of them i have seen some clear plastic jars in the same shape and i presume they are replacing them paint by paint
you should give vallejo game color a try.... i substitute any GW paint with game color since almost every GW-paint has its GC-equivalent. they come in 17ml bottles, are cheaper and cover much better. the only drawbacks are that you have to use a wet palette because you cant drop the paint onto yer brush directly, and they can settle at the bottom of the bottle after a while, so you better shake em sometimes.
Do you put washes on all your models before you paint them ??? I just started painting and my models arent looking bad at all.. their just not looking as crisp as I'd like .. do you have ne suggestions ???
there was an older style of pot, round not hex from the mid 80's, these came in the original boxes of 9. They had box names of monster, creature, space marine. there was 4 I think but I cant remember the name of the basic set. Then there was the original inks, these came in dropper bottles and needed watered down before use but they were amazing inks
I hadn't realised that Coat D'Arms still make the old Citadel colours. I used to love those paints and I miss some of the OOP colours- i'll be getting some of them!
I also use a lot of Vallejo paints which i've found generally excellent.
I switched to Vallejo after 15 years of GW paints and really the vallejo are much better . The paint is superior in every way , smoother , much better for shading etc . And its half the price of the GW for more paint , if you get a chance give it a try .
the wash's are damn nice especially for a newbie like me lol and when i get the cash and i would recommend others is to buy the wash set save some money and get every wash they make, also this wasnt so boring it was kind of nifty to see the evolution of GW paint line
you nailed it. Ive been painting with GW paint as long as you have and you pointed out exactly the problems with each paint pot design. Hopefully we will get a better pot design next time around
recently i started the hobby again on the side, my whole box of the mk2 range pains have dried up and horribly crusty. the mk3 are muc better and still liquid
I have always used GW paints, but as they have swithed manufacturers, the quality has droped. That being said, I feel that their current foundation paints and the washes are excellent. However I don't like their "standard" paints. I prefer Coat d'Arms.
You really must try the Vallejo's Model Color and Game Color lines. They are awesome! I would be amazed if you didn't prefer them. Thanks for the video.
I have a couple of even OLDER pots... ableached bone and a bestial brown, a few other basic colors of GW color. Look a lot like the Coat D'Arms bottles, still using them after almost 20 years. I bought an entire line of the screw top lids, and almost every color (except inks) have since dried out. I managed to reconstitute a few colors.... and I live in the North East! This vid reminds us why a lot of pros use Valejo and other dropper style paints.
Great vid, very intresting - I remember the old style paints and washes whiched leaked... It leaked all over my gw stuff i had just perchased, and so I went back to informed the manager - who couldnt apologise enough and grabbed some free stuff for me. Good memories lol. Thanks again for the vid mate.
I have heard that the older "French screw top" paints that GW used to sell were designed to look like Bolter shells, apparently this backfired(l) as the darn things kept drying out and they had to redesign them.
Like a few others have mentioned, there was a range before the old "Hex" paints (still got some that I use today) but that was a little before I got into the hobby. It used to be sold as different paint sets for different ranges.
Just to clear things up, GW paints weren't made by coat d'arms. Coat d'arms, foundry, I-Kore, P3 and old GW paints are all made by a manufacturer based in Manchester england called HMG.
The two washes that everybody needs are badab black and devlan mud.
As for colors: black, white, red, yellow, blue, green, brown, silver, and flesh, basically the colors that come in the GW paint set. Using these colors, you can mix various shades.
Do you know how to get to the old GW website by any chance? The Adventures of the Fellowship was an article I used to love reading about, but the newer site hasn't got it anymore.
Nice! One line missing in the overview are the 1st wave of Citadel Colour (Coat D'arms design).
They were featured in the old Monster, Creature and Space Marine paint sets. I still have those, and most have held up w/out drying up! That lid design is still the best overall.
I just recently bought some Coat D'arms as well--I was especially satisfied with the unique deep undertone in Deadly Nightshade.
Also, I'm still looking for a good replacement for Ghoul Grey--anyone have any ideas?
i personally like the new washes and foundation paints and bottles and that little doohickey is a nice thing it keeps your pots open and easy to access .... i like those...... but i havent been around long enough to get the other ones (only about 4 years of using GW paint)
I miss some of the old hex bottle colors. I'll have to try coat d'arms The screw top bottle sucked. I really like the foundation paints and washes. GW has really improved their paints. The new bottles are not so great. I'd prefer they switched back to hex bottles even if they were made smaller like the new ones.
Dev: you've got to try Vallejo Game Color. I used to be a hardcore GW paint fan (from the hex bottle days), and they've done nothing but go downhill. That is, until the foundation and wash pots came out, they went downhill. Maybe they're on the uptick, but I GREATLY prefer the V paints. You can spread out into the Vallejo Model Color like I have, and end up with about 400 total options. Believe me, they're the best there is. I don't even have to add water!
I have all the P3 Privateer paints as well. P3 metallics blow but their inks are pretty good. Vallejo is pretty good because they carry some of the discontinued GW colors like ghostly grey. They are pretty thin too. you will have an easy time with them as a new painter or if you're lazy like I am. Straight out of the bottle Vallejo paints give nice thin coats with no thinning necessary. they also have an excellent color selection. I find them around locally for much cheaper than GW paints.
I got a chuckle when you kept showing all of the "other" paints you had purchased. I knew right away you were trying to replicate Deadly Nightshade, lol.
Thankfully you finally found it and in it's original formulation!
the paints he shows at the end are known as " foundation paints " in u.k they have more pigament and you need to mix to get white but it is amazing once you do ! it is way easier than slapping on skull white , also the new paints now cost £2.50 per tub thats about $5 pritty expensive! considering last year it was only £2
Interesting vid. I remember the first paint I got probably around the mid 80's It was woodland green. I was trying to think of the company who made them for GW and then you popped up and showed the foundry paint. I'm about 90% certain that those were the guys who made the paints. Nice little trip down memory lane. I must try the Reaper or Vallejo paints at some point. Anyway thanks for posting the vid. :)
I fear I may have been talking complete and utter crap. The old memory must be going. I'm now 100% certain that Foundry never made GW paints at all. All the old school ones dating back to day dot must have been Coat D Arms. I clearly know sod all though so I'll stay quiet. :)
Nah, you're not showing your age. There was a hobby shop here in my town until about 2 years ago that still carried a few leftovers of the paint boxes. I miss the days when GW was a more paint oriented company instead of a game oriented company. :(
And you don't "ask" them, they have some sort of shelving system with racks of paints and you pick which ones you want, but they do sell some large sets as well.
It really depends. Add only a little water at first, a few drops at a time. You can always add more water if you need to, but if you add too much, you have to wait for it to dry out on its own.
Pretty much. You'd be looking at spending at least 200-300 on an army, and then 50-100 on modeling supplies. That being said, if you just picked up a unit a month, and didn't get another one until that one was finished, the cost would be spread over time. Start with a battalion box (which usually has a couple of units) and you could play smaller point games while your army grows.
There was one more bottle style before the Hexagonal bottles, but you kinda showed it already :). The original Citadel Colour bottles were smooth round exactly the same style as the Coat D'Arms one you showed exept with Citadel Colour labeling :).
my mate told me out your video and told me to look it up i found it really usefull lol
although i was just wondering if you could link the website to the coat d arms paints because i can not find there website and if you say there cheaper and you get more and they are more reliable then they sound like the paints i need lol
thanks again for the info i shall check some more of your videos

I bought an entire line of the screw top lids, and almost every color (except inks) have since dried out. I managed to reconstitute a few colors.... and I live in the North East! This vid reminds us why a lot of pros use Valejo and other dropper style paints.

Hey Devstro,
Great vid, really enjoyed it!
Cheers,

Just to clear things up, GW paints weren't made by coat d'arms. Coat d'arms, foundry, I-Kore, P3 and old GW paints are all made by a manufacturer based in Manchester england called HMG.

what are the basic paints i need for an army (dwarf and goblin, as well as my friends lizardmen.) i just need the basic washes and paints.
minihendrix12 2 years ago

TheOnlyLichKing 2 years ago
I miss some of the old hex bottle colors. I'll have to try coat d'arms The screw top bottle sucked. I really like the foundation paints and washes. GW has really improved their paints. The new bottles are not so great. I'd prefer they switched back to hex bottles even if they were made smaller like the new ones.

what do you collect lord of the rings or warhammer?

Warhammer Fantasy and 40k.

I don't even have to add water!
kevinalford 2 years ago
I have all the P3 Privateer paints as well. P3 metallics blow but their inks are pretty good. Vallejo is pretty good because they carry some of the discontinued GW colors like ghostly grey. They are pretty thin too. you will have an easy time with them as a new painter or if you're lazy like I am. Straight out of the bottle Vallejo paints give nice thin coats with no thinning necessary. they also have an excellent color selection. I find them around locally for much cheaper than GW paints.

Enjoyed the video!

Isn't is Citadel that makes the paints?
Anyways.. These paints is regarded as some of the best on the market, really!
And nice history! Thanks! :) I learned something new, as I'm just 17.........
myhuxpo 2 years ago
GW pays another company to make them and then put the Citadel labels on the bottle.
Devstro 2 years ago
Weird... Know who the company is?
myhuxpo 2 years ago
Not currently. Someone in China. It is a very common business practice driven by economic factors.

I have to agree that the GW washes are idiot-proof. Careful application will make anyone (even me) look like they can paint!

RDarrall 2 years ago
I fear I may have been talking complete and utter crap. The old memory must be going. I'm now 100% certain that Foundry never made GW paints at all. All the old school ones dating back to day dot must have been Coat D Arms. I clearly know sod all though so I'll stay quiet. :)

i like the flip top french i thought the chinese mass produced carbage
jo7dan118 2 years ago
they have a huge amount of pigment so they make great base coats for some of their thiner colors such as :blood red , sunburst yellow , ect ect.

This may sound stupid, but arn't they just acrylic paints?
If not what are they?
rose20182 2 years ago
Apparently GW is going to change the paint pots again, because the latest pots are impossible to stack

Anyone remember the older round paint pots? The ones that came with the Golden Demon painting a couple models at his workbench on the box ?
Or am I just showing my age? Lol
Will24Edin 3 years ago
Nah, you're not showing your age. There was a hobby shop here in my town until about 2 years ago that still carried a few leftovers of the paint boxes. I miss the days when GW was a more paint oriented company instead of a game oriented company. :(
AGProductionsInc 3 years ago
Indeed these pots where the first! And you are correct on that one. One of the names was Terracota and is recently republished.

can you go in to gw and tell them what colours you want and they will get it or do you have to buy them in packets?
shaneomcg123 3 years ago
You can buy the colors individually, but they also sell sets too.
Devstro 3 years ago
And you don't "ask" them, they have some sort of shelving system with racks of paints and you pick which ones you want, but they do sell some large sets as well.
CorruptFision 3 years ago
It really depends. Add only a little water at first, a few drops at a time. You can always add more water if you need to, but if you add too much, you have to wait for it to dry out on its own.
Devstro 3 years ago
How much water would you add to keep them hydrated?

im thinking of starting to play warhammer again but i have a little amount of money ....is it all still expensive ?
gsbones006 3 years ago
Pretty much. You'd be looking at spending at least 200-300 on an army, and then 50-100 on modeling supplies. That being said, if you just picked up a unit a month, and didn't get another one until that one was finished, the cost would be spread over time. Start with a battalion box (which usually has a couple of units) and you could play smaller point games while your army grows.
Devstro 3 years ago
aah thanks for the advice, right now im broke :P but when i have the money i will think about what you said! thanks!

agrabush 3 years ago
There was one more bottle style before the Hexagonal bottles, but you kinda showed it already :). The original Citadel Colour bottles were smooth round exactly the same style as the Coat D'Arms one you showed exept with Citadel Colour labeling :).

my mate told me out your video and told me to look it up i found it really usefull lol
although i was just wondering if you could link the website to the coat d arms paints because i can not find there website and if you say there cheaper and you get more and they are more reliable then they sound like the paints i need lol
thanks again for the info i shall check some more of your videos
