  • wow looks like a nice setup. Maybe I will consider one of those.

  • Wow this pretty much takes a DOF adapter and 35mm lens out of the question for myself anyways. And these cameras really arent all that expensive! I just bought a HF M30 But I think I will be selling it for this! Great Video!

  • @TheeInspireFilm I was thinking the same thing when I first tested it. I'm going for a hdslr now, but this was a great camera. Thanks!

  • @bugilt why a dslr? if you dont mind my asking

  • @TheeInspireFilm You get a much shallower DOF with the hdslr. I can change to the lens that suits the situation.

  • @bugilt How do they compare in price?

  • @TheeInspireFilm I'm thinking about getting the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 you can get one for around $900 with a 14-42mm Hybrid Lens. The higher bit rate hacks make such nice images.

  • is this the LEGRIA S10 or the VIXIA S10? and what is the difference between the two???

  • WHAT SOFT WEAR DO YOU USE ???

  • THE BEST WAY TO USE MANUAL FOCUS is so simple....

ALL WAYS AND I SAY ALL WAYS USE A BLOODY TRIPOD FRAME YOUR SHOTS USE NATUREL LIGHT LATE OR AERLY

IN THE DAY . ..USE YOUR REMOTE CONTROL THAT CAME WITH THE CAMERA . POINT IT AT THE LCD SCREEN DO NOT TOUCH THE WHEEL OR CAMERA AND YOU WILL GET A GOOD STILL SHOT . GET BACK TO ME.

GOOD LUCK FROM DOWN UNDER OZ

  • Can you tell me step by step how to manual focus? I put my camera on manual focus, and turned the wheel but nothing, what am I doing wrong?

  • @MrGodzservant You need to go into the menu and set the Custom Key/Dial to focus. First click the function key. Then navigate to the last option - Menu. Select it by hitting the set button on the joystick. Then scroll over to the 5th menu with the joystick. It looks like a wrench with two dots on my menu. The first setting should be set to focus to let the dial operate manual focus.

  • @MrGodzservant I have added a manual to the description.

  • @MrGodzservant I have added a manual to the description.

  • Good job, did you assign the focus function to the jog wheel on the front left side or did you do it on-screen?

  • @Papasean7 the joystick next to the display

  • what cameras are there out there which can do this focus, at a reasonable price.?

  • Really enjoyed watching your test. Doesn't that say something about the state of television/movies these days... when I find test footage on YouTube to be more engaging?

Great work. Keep it up. I just got my HFS10, so I'll show my tests next!

  • Awesome video. How do you import video to a pc? do you use the software that came with the camcorder to do that? I've had this for 5 months now with no luck... :[

    Thanks!

  • @Yoopak I used software at first, but I now just import straight for the camera. When this camera cam out most editing software couldn't handle it natively. Now that the software vendors have had time to catch up most work with it.

  • @bugilt My brother has had this camera for awhile and he's majoring in film. I have a Canon T2i, and I was wondering, did you mount a specific lens on your HFS10 to capture video like this or did you just use the basic lens built into the camera? Thanks.

  • @dan325013 The built in lens.

  • @bugilt And do you just use manual focus? I didn't even know the camera had manual focus until last night. It's my brother's camera so I didn't look into it that much.

  • @dan325013 Yes, you can use the joystick on the screen or the custom roller on the front of the camera.

  • u should be a SK8 filmer or sumet, omg ur epic at filming!

  • great video. i just bought the s20 and can't wait to play with dof

  • how'd you do that focus effect

  • @TheBELTWHIPPING zoom in all the way the set the focus to manual.

  • What a fine vid! Well done. I am trying to figure out what do you mean by fuel tubing etc even with google search could not gel close to what you meant. Please post a photo or video illustrating what you mean. I have this cam. and due to take my sons church activity in the next few days. Once again, well done.

  • @jighaba google rc fuel tubing

  • I don't get it, in all hf s10 videos there is barely any DOF but in this video the dof is veery shallow, im twisting and turning about getting this one or a DSLR because i like the functions of a real camcorder but i really love dof but if the dof on this particular camera is pretty good id rather get this than a dslr because that does miss a couple features over a camcorder AARRGHHH

  • @RubenDelight My next camera will be a dslr. I was thinking the t2i.

  • @bugilt lawl that was the one i was thinking aboutx]

  • @RubenDelight The depth of field is not at all shallow on this camera. Using zoom it can be enhanced, but that just isn't practical. T2i or 7d are good choices for DOF.

  • @Theelephantsays well than its a good thing i got the t2i right:D

  • anyone know how the s10 compares to the new hf m30? They both cost the same now

  • This camera is great. The only thing is they came out with a new one (Like every 6 months) and I'm wondering how the stablization is on it. Did you use a tripod when filming this?

  • The stabilization isn't very good from what I have seen. I used a very cheap tripod. I think I paid $20 for it. I would suggest getting or making some sort of steady cam and keeping pans slow.

  • I just bot this cam and can't get it to focus quick like in your video. Is there a setting or is it a matter of technique? Also, can you share what your setup is when converting the file and then to youtube? BTW, good video!

  • I use the instant auto focus in most cases, but on this video I used manual focus. I used either the joystick or the wheel mounted on the front of the camera.

I use several methods to convert my video. The easiest is TMPGEnc to MPEG-4 then to youtube. I edit most my video in Premiere.

  • how did u change the focus from one object to the other so fast?

  • I set the dial on the front of the camera to manual focus. I don't recommend using it by hand. Get some tubing from a local hobby store and use something stiff inserted in it. Then use the wand to play it like a violin.

  • @bugilt Can you elaborate on this violin focus technique. I just got this camera for my wedding videography business and I need to get the manual focus dial to work quicker. Looks like youve got a great idea but I dont really get it. Thanks in advance

  • @mjc05 You need fuel tubing, like found in rc cars. Then insert a metal rod into the fuel tubing. Wire hangers work pretty well for the metal rod. Set the custom key/dial to 2 focus. Then use the wand you just made to adjust the focus.

I've seen a larger after market focus ring for older cameras.

  • Do you know does this camera is better than the HV40?

  • I personally think it's a better camera. The main difference is the recording media. The HV40 uses tapes and the HF-S10 uses flash memory. The image sensor on the hf-s10 is larger. You can goto the canon website to compare the two.

  • I heard It's better to stay with tapes and keep the quality better in this way

  • I have never hear that before. Last time I used tape as my media the camera ate the tape. I love not having to buy more media each time I want to record. Also it makes it easy to transfer to my computer.

  • Maybe at first but minidv tapes wear down pretty fast.

  • Please make more videos with your Canon HFS10.

  • I sure will. I posted a ski trip video recently. It wasn't filmed with the proper settings, but it turned out pretty well.

  • I have two new videos filmed on my hf-s10.

  • Hi, This is the video I wanted to see to get some idea about new camcorders. So far, no one posted any video with DOF test like yours. Could you please do this same test at night and post it here for us? Thx in advance! :)

  • This isn't the best camera for low light, but I'll see what it can do on the tripod in low light.

  • Hi , Thx for the quick reply. I saw Canon added new camcorders for March and April 2010 release. I am interested in taking cinematic videos including documentary and travel videos. Which camcorder would you recommend for those purpose? Thx- Jay

  • The HF S21 looks like a pretty good camera. I'd personally go with a camera from the EOS line. A Rebel T1i or 7D with a Handy Digital Audio Recorder. That's if I wanted better quality for around the same price.

If I wanted something easy to carry I'd get a Kodak Playsport. I haven't seen video from this camera, but it a hell of a deal for $150.

  • Thx bugilt, I will buy HF S21 when it is released on April.

  • great footage!! Was it recorded with stock lenses?

  • yes, just the stock lenses.

  • Are you using Manual focus in this video? or auto?

  • Manual focus

  • Very nicely done.

  • Thanks

  • so, is the manual focus built in?

  • yes

  • @bugilt oh thanks, loooks very professional by the way.:)

  • Thanks, I'm looking forward to adding what I learn on my next attempt.

  • Is it true that you cannot control the aperture in cine mode?

  • I have found no way to do so. I've looking for a firmware hack since I got my hf10.

  • why does it have to be zoomed in to get shallow depth of field? I thought the fstops go up when you zoom?

  • I'm not sure of the actual formula, but the the focal length is also a factor of the dof.

  • stupid youtube wont let me post a link

but goto dvxuser and look at articles and the 3rd one down is about depth of field related to sensor size and focal length

  • He talks about the focal length effect on the dof.

  • very pro!!!

    6 stars!!

  • Thanks!

  • even when i use manual focus it takes some time do you have that quick wheel ?

  • I used the joystick on the display screen.

  • how do you focuz so fast it take along time for me

  • I was using the manual focus.

  • Hi ... great video ... very clear ... no lagging ... which program did you use for post production?

  • edited with premiere

  • Thanks ... obviously a far superior program than used on some of the other videos I have seen on Youtube ... great job and thanks again for sharing and giving back to the world comminity!

  • Thanks!

  • Thanks for this great video.

  • Thanks for watching.

  • WD-58H wide-angle-converter would be nice too.

  • I've been looking into wide angle lens lately. If the DOF setups drop in price I might go that direction.

  • The lens that is built into the camera.

  • hehe..

  • Thanks for making this video, helped me a lot with the decision to buy this cam :)

  • did you shoot it with full zoom?

  • Yes, full zoom is needed for the shallow dof.

  • Awesome video. You should get a neutral density filter. I did that on mine, it helps alot.

  • Nice video. These images look familiar, but different when looking through your lens.

  • You must live nearby.
