I have the marlin 44/70 and 30/30, i have taken many deer with both of these.i know both would be an awesome defense against anything or anyone. they are short,powerful and very fast in the right hands.I can usually have have two hits on their mark at 50 to 100 hundred yards to other experienced shooters one shot on that are using a modern bolt action.i highly recommend these rifles

I honestly never thought about using a lever action for defence against 2 leg creatures. I carry mine in .44 for the hogs. Would work the same I imagine...good excuse to pull it out and keep practicing.

I own a cimarron 1892 in 45lc a round that is underestimated, but when you have a 255gr bullet pushed out by 30grns of black powder you have a very potent defensive weapon. I also own a 30-30 mossberg 464 another truly potent firearm that has been around since the 1890's and still does its job well.

If one wants to forgo the black powder and if one has the funds, Buffalo Bore offer a powerful .45 Long Colt load. Basically, it's the "standard" .45 Long Colt, but on steroids. It's not the .45 +P load, so it will fire in ANY .45 handgun that's in normal operating condition. It's great!

Mine does not jam.

The only possible reasons I can think of for a jam would be badly handloaded ammo with the bullet seated out too far, or wadcutter or semi-wadcutter bullets that could possibly hang up on the way into the chamber.

Use proper roundnose or jacketed bullets seated out to the proper cartridge overall length, and you won't get a single jam.

Personally if a guy can get fast enough with reloading of the weapon, and can be accurate from a neeling position, a lever action just may well be the gun to go with. within a 150 yards the lever action is absolutly deadly and theres not to much bullet proof vests that will stop a .44 mag., Plus if you have a pair, and get the gun rebarreled to a 1 in 20 twist so you can use Buffalo bores 300 plus grain solid lead bullet in a +P+ configuration, well then you have an annihilator in your hands.

Also, the USA is a much bigger country in size and population. To me, a lever-action is one of the ultimate survival/defense guns out there. Autos like ARs and AKs are great, but they can jam and have way too many parts that can break. Levers are simple, rugged, reliable, and accurate and are designed to be carried in the worst possible conditions. Pistol chamberings are the best. In .45 Colt or .357 mag, you can have a rifle and a pistol in the same cailber and it'll take a man down better than a .223 ever could.

@MissouriKid88 but ak's dont break. and i suppose that if the primary purpose of your gun in a survival situation is hunting, then yes, the lever action would be the way to go. if you had to get into a gun battle with someone with 30 rounds per reload, you have a chance of killing him, just not as high of a chance as he has of killing you. you can hunt with an ak, but not as well as a lever. you can fight with a lever, just not as well as an ak.

@dammitcrap Actually, you can fight real well, if not, better with a lever action than an AK. You just have to unleash the cowboy in you. they were the "assault rifles" of their day and can still be.

@OpsmanONE perhaps if you were going to ambush him. the ak has faster rate of fire, faster reload, higher capacity. and if you were coming at me with a handgun chambered lever gun i would also have rang over you as well, unless you had a 30-30. that would have to be some serious inner-cowboy to overcome being outclassed in all major categories

@dammitcrap You'd be surprised at what someone with a lever gun can do against a group armed with AR's and AK's. It's all in the skill, precision, speed and comprehension. Plus, it only takes one well-placed shot to kill, then repeat. (I guess that's why it's called a cowboy repeater). Now that's some serious inner-cowboy that can be found in all of us! (BTW, I do have an AK and an AR also.)

@MissouriKid88 Actually AR, AK's have fewer parts and they are easier to maintain, plus they have a longer range. But you cant beat the look of a classic lever gun and they draw less attention.

XC 4 carbine in 9mm. It has no jams compared

to the marlin camp carbine or ruger pc9. When

you want an American gun try the 80`s versions

of the ruger and marlin, they were ways better

produced and were on the same level like the

XC4 today. Take your time, may be you have luck

on an auction, never give up your dreams ! :)

@ChishioAme But the Marlin can still be had in the handgun calibers, sure theres going to be a wait for some of the bigger stores, but thats usually due to what they are allocated, once they sell what they are allocated they have to order more. Someof your smaller Gun shops can get the rifle, mine should be in my hands in about 3 weeks, in .44 magnum.
