The instrumentals you're used to are created using original studio recordings.

It's not possible to remove vocals from consumer media such as a CD or MP3 because the difference between instruments and vocals that the human ear perceives is fabricated in the mind: if you were to separate the vocals and instruments, you'd only have part of the vocals and part of the instruments.

Wow - I have Felt Tip Sound Studio v. 2.2.4 rather than Audacity, and I found the Invert Signal Polarity command, then used mixdown to Mono, and holy cow it WORKED! Thank you! Now I can insert my own vocal!

ok if you split the tracks you can do all the shit he said but then if you mute the track with the vocals the second track should just be the instrumental. then, select the second track or track w/o vocals and go to File -> Export Selection it should export JUST the instrumental. It'll still sound a little warpy but its better than nothing and no vocals

@jamiekyo Another video I checked out removed the vocals substantially, but NOT completely. It was actually attenuated. However, usually one removes vocals to either do karaoke (as that video suggested) in which the attenuated vocal will not be audible or one will sing over that attenuated vocal on a new recording with the same result...the previous vocal will not be audible. Kind of like tape hiss not being detectable in the louder parts.

For the most part it worked for me. I still get clear audio on some of the parts but it could be due to how the song was performed and edited originally. After all, it's not like most song's chorus was recorded the same time as the singing, there had to be editing involving separating the vocals from the actual lyrics.
