Could someone tell me what the importance of the poem is? Is it just to trick her to think he is an artist and a poet or to show he likes her? I watched the movie one day and am not sure. Why does he cut himself after the restaurant scene?

It's to trick her into thinking he's artistic and sensitive. When he broke into her apartment, he noticed that that's the type of guy she likes, so he became that.

He cuts himself to get her sympathy.
