The Phantasy Star series seems to have the most epic boss battles of any RPG. In story, yes, but mainly in design. I really can't think of another series that does it better.
I just completed this game last week on the Wii. It's a very enjoyable game with drama in the story, graphics near the limit of Genesis and enjoyable music. My biggest complaint is that the main character Chaz was the weakest protagonist I've ever played with. He must have died 100+ times during the game while the others died less than 50 times. Also, the game could have had a slightly bigger world to explore.
Chaz is still much stronger than Rolf (Phantasy Star II) and by implication Alis (Phantasy Star I) too. It isn't because Chaz is weaker, but because the monsters were stronger in 4. Zio would probably pwn Mother Brain. As for a bigger world they should remake the series, but this time not blow up Parma but instead blow up an irrelevant fourth planet.
@l33tpwnzord You're so ignorant you dont even know that the Final Fantasy 3 you think is so the best thign since slice bread is actually Final Fantasy 6. No ones even played the real ff3 unless you're a die hard fan and that shit ds remake doesnt count.
I didn't have a genesis of my own but I had a cousin who did. He had few games for that system that I often played like Sonic and NBA Jam but he didn't have any of the Phantasy Star games :(

@AnimeOtakuStar Im not sure, My only guess is that the game box came with a strategy guide that buffed up the price. Many localized RPG games where doing that at the time to help people uncommon with the genre.
@AnimeOtakuStar we had no book like that at the regular edition of EU, still expensive like that, but I guess it was expensive because of the extra power of the cartridges chip. on the other hand, all new games have been very expensive at that time . - . still didnt stop me to buy this game twice. its just worth it haha
If you have any idea what you're doing you should never have to grind in this game. Just searching for items/killing monsters on the way to the boss is plenty.
i always made sure rune had efess so i could do the grand cross combo. i'd do that as much as possible, then i'd have rika heal or attack. demi was pretty much useless to me.
This is one of the few RPGs of the era which had hard boss battles. If you don't know the trick to Zio (and I'm not talking about using the Psycho Wand - think order of characters and using Macros), he can be tough.
Xe-A-Thouls, Lashiec, Dark Force, The Profound Dark Force...all of these fights were tough if you don't know what you're doing and even if you did, a little bit of bad luck could really crap on your day.
My friend told me to get Fantasy Star with an "F" if i liked FF. was he just mistaken or are they different games? please respond with a VALID answer.
I don't understand all these comments about people not knowing to use the Psycho Wand on Zio. You go through a huge dungeon in order to obtain it, and Rune specifically states in the game text that you have to use it to negate Zio's barrier.

You know the boss at the end I think it's in the Anger Tower.. that gives you the last spell. I didn't know what he was saying so I always selected "yes" cuz I thought I had to fight him and it'd give me something.. I worked Chaz til lvl 99. Fucked the whole game cuz of the glitch, but I finaly beat him. when I played the game later I realized I coulda just selected "no"...
Zio is a very cool boss, I like his phlegmatic speaking and self confidence, his dark clothes.. and damnit, he can summon a NIGHTMARE to fight with him ;-)

I was terrified when I first fought Zio. Such an intense game for it's time. The inconsistency of some the combination attacks really added some suspense to fights.
BTW, stupid BROSE never worked for anything. Most useless spell in the game.
People who made this RPG really knew how to do it. This is one of the few games that I've been so much into that i was seriously in the game. And was crying when Alys died. Hopefully we'll see an PS IV remake someday!
You can tell an RPG is great when it plays more like a good book than a game. That's how I felt about this one. I felt like I was going through everything with the characters. The only 2 other RPG's that put me in that zone were FF7 & Chrono Trigger. I've played many and liked many, but to me those 3 separate themselves from the pack.
See this is the kind of Phantasy Star Sega needs to make again. None of this PSO or PSU Crap. I know the Algo Chapter is closed. But that doesn't mean we can't have another great series thats based in another Solar System, that is an old school JRPG like this. Hell PS 4 can easily be the best over any JRPG that has been released in the last year in fact.

This game is my top favorite. Many attempts at remixes and rearranges have failed in my opinion. Once I get my synth though I plan to remaster the tracks. Basically I'll remake them with a lack of midi sound but instead high quality instrument sound. I've already got the guitars and drums.
Ooze and End of the Millennium are my first two targets but I plan to remake the entire soundtrack. Including a second set of vocal arranges. Don't know if anyone would be interested in listening. I Hope so.
I think that's cool - i also like the music and the games a lot - I played in roms and sadly after ultra leveling and somewhere after ZIO, it froze permanently :D
But I digress... the music is nice, and as a bassplayer I love the bass parts (in most game music) and for that matter, pretty much all the rest too! So go ahead, I think it's a phantastic idea!
I don't like the battle perspective. The characters are so close to the menus that they get covered by them. Still, interesting series of old-school RPGs.
This game sucked hard for being one of the best rpgs on the Genesis. Even Zio, this so called awesome villain gets killed 1/4 through the game. With it's various flaws like localization, crap music and sound, palette swapped visuals, generic save the universe plot, cookie cutter characters, and unspectacular death of a main character, only a true genesis fanboy could enjoy paying for an 80 dollar waste of 30 hours.
Are you out of your mind? This is one of the most classic rpgs there is. Games dont need to have 50 plot twist to be good. While you say cookie cutter character I say great character devolopment and lovable characters.
@Clesarie what the fuck are u so vehemently defending? looking at it now, maybe it might seem great, but when it first came out, it was drowned out in final fantasy startdom (and other games as well) and genesis was dying (already dead to most). while the game looks great in retrospect, it was too little too late to make a splash for those really into console gaming. if it came out a few years earlier than it did, it would have been a different story.
I played this for th first time when i was 10 and couldnt work out how to disable the shield,The i picked it back up aged 14 and ran through it.such an amazing game.
Damn why didn't i buy this instead of number 2 it was only 4 dollars! Now I play on emu. I love this game I made it all the way to the other planet and I went back to play after awhile and all my sav files were gone.
I loved this game. And was stuck on this battle for the LONGEST time when I was a kid because I didn't "use" the special staff to weaken Zio. When I finally did my guys were built up so strong it lasted 1 round and finishing the game was a breeze, lol.
I bought the Sega Genesis Ultimate Collection almost entirely because I wanted to play all classic Phantasy Star games. Sadly it doesn't contain Landstalker or the Wonder Boy games :(

@StarFoxCommand It does not. Same for spells that change same stats. Blessing would replace deban or another blessing, for example.
But since those spells depends on the characters stats (strength for barrier and mental for deban), it turns out that blessing is better than deban, since Raja's mental is greater. And Wren's barrier is better than Demi's.
Well, I have two recording programs. I used Camstudio for my phantasy star videos, although, it was not meant for recording games. The other program I have is Hypercam, which I recently bought and it IS meant for gaming.

That's actually Saccubus he's summoning, not Dark Force. You run into him during a "nightmare" in the original PS as well. You can only win the fight if you're quite over-leveled. If/when you lose you wake up and realize it was just a bad dream.
He calls out his name as he's dying, or at least he starts to. He's possessed by Dark Force, but what he is summoning is clearly Saccubus and anyone who's played the original should know that. And to answer mwnash I seriously doubt I would know who Saccubus was unless I was quite familiar with not only this game, but the entire series.
What he is summoning is given the designation "nightmare" if you notice... and that is the hint. The casual PS fan/player or somebody who didn't play the original won't make the connection and will just think that's Dark Force. But to a seasoned vet this should ring a bell. That and there is also the fact that this thing looks identical to Saccubus, only with snazzier 16 bit graphics.
You're right there, he or it is identical but wouldn't it still be classed as Dark Force? Because even though it isn't there but it could be there spiritually or something, if that makes sense.
I guess it could be an emanation of Dark Force. Like a dream (bad dream) version. Another connection is that in both games it's a fight you're not supposed to win, although if you over-level like crazy in the original you can beat him. Then again I guess you could call Dark Force the Profound Darkness since DF is just an emanation of his power that breaks through the weakest part of the seal once every 1K years. Nah, that's too confusing. To me they're 3 different things, and this is Saccubus
You have a very solid point. Yes, it does look like saccubus but really it actually looks exactly like Dark Falz /Force from the same game. Saccubus is only a head as this has a body. Also, Saccubus in the nightmare Alis sees is actually a glimpse of Dark Force, cut to just its head. In fact in the Japanese version its name was in fact Nightmare and they changed it to Saccubus in the American version. I have no idea why, with Nightmare you wouldn't have thought of it as a separate monster.
Consistency would be really nice but unfortuantely there are alot of discrepencies between the games due to the different translation staffs. Some translated more strictly where as others wanted to make it easier to say names (Which is a little dumb given that they're all simple names mostly) and some just wanted more recognizable names and so on. For example them changing Lutz to Noah which lost Rune's connection to him was completely pointless except to screw up story tie-ins.
Rune doesn't have efess at this stage of the game. Getting efess at this stage of the game would require game genie codes for XP gaining or long hours of training.
He does if you level up Chaz to a certain point - and it's not an unreasonable level. I'm not sure what the "trigger" levels are, but something causes Rune, upon second meeting, and the fifth party members to skyrocket in level, depending upon Chaz's level at the corresponding points in the game.
..beyond oasis. Both great games, but man that price tag was insane!

With it's various flaws like localization, crap music and sound, palette swapped visuals, generic save the universe plot, cookie cutter characters, and unspectacular death of a main character, only a true genesis fanboy could enjoy paying for an 80 dollar waste of 30 hours.

Are you out of your mind? This is one of the most classic rpgs there is. Games dont need to have 50 plot twist to be good. While you say cookie cutter character I say great character devolopment and lovable characters.

@Clesarie what the fuck are u so vehemently defending? looking at it now, maybe it might seem great, but when it first came out, it was drowned out in final fantasy startdom (and other games as well) and genesis was dying (already dead to most). while the game looks great in retrospect, it was too little too late to make a splash for those really into console gaming. if it came out a few years earlier than it did, it would have been a different story.

I played this for th first time when i was 10 and couldnt work out how to disable the shield,The i picked it back up aged 14 and ran through it.such an amazing game.

Damn why didn't i buy this instead of number 2 it was only 4 dollars! Now I play on emu. I love this game I made it all the way to the other planet and I went back to play after awhile and all my sav files were gone.

I loved this game. And was stuck on this battle for the LONGEST time when I was a kid because I didn't "use" the special staff to weaken Zio. When I finally did my guys were built up so strong it lasted 1 round and finishing the game was a breeze, lol.

Actually his defence. You keep hitting 1 all the time if you don't use it. I think it will lower his strength a little but specially his defence.

I bought the Sega Genesis Ultimate Collection almost entirely because I wanted to play all classic Phantasy Star games. Sadly it doesn't contain Landstalker or the Wonder Boy games :(

@StarFoxCommand It does not. Same for spells that change same stats. Blessing would replace deban or another blessing, for example.
But since those spells depends on the characters stats (strength for barrier and mental for deban), it turns out that blessing is better than deban, since Raja's mental is greater. And Wren's barrier is better than Demi's.
There is also a small randomness.

Well, I have two recording programs. I used Camstudio for my phantasy star videos, although, it was not meant for recording games. The other program I have is Hypercam, which I recently bought and it IS meant for gaming.

That's actually Saccubus he's summoning, not Dark Force. You run into him during a "nightmare" in the original PS as well. You can only win the fight if you're quite over-leveled. If/when you lose you wake up and realize it was just a bad dream.

He calls out his name as he's dying, or at least he starts to. He's possessed by Dark Force, but what he is summoning is clearly Saccubus and anyone who's played the original should know that. And to answer mwnash I seriously doubt I would know who Saccubus was unless I was quite familiar with not only this game, but the entire series.

What he is summoning is given the designation "nightmare" if you notice... and that is the hint. The casual PS fan/player or somebody who didn't play the original won't make the connection and will just think that's Dark Force. But to a seasoned vet this should ring a bell. That and there is also the fact that this thing looks identical to Saccubus, only with snazzier 16 bit graphics.

I guess it could be an emanation of Dark Force. Like a dream (bad dream) version. Another connection is that in both games it's a fight you're not supposed to win, although if you over-level like crazy in the original you can beat him. Then again I guess you could call Dark Force the Profound Darkness since DF is just an emanation of his power that breaks through the weakest part of the seal once every 1K years. Nah, that's too confusing. To me they're 3 different things, and this is Saccubus

You have a very solid point. Yes, it does look like saccubus but really it actually looks exactly like Dark Falz /Force from the same game. Saccubus is only a head as this has a body. Also, Saccubus in the nightmare Alis sees is actually a glimpse of Dark Force, cut to just its head. In fact in the Japanese version its name was in fact Nightmare and they changed it to Saccubus in the American version. I have no idea why, with Nightmare you wouldn't have thought of it as a separate monster.

Consistency would be really nice but unfortuantely there are alot of discrepencies between the games due to the different translation staffs. Some translated more strictly where as others wanted to make it easier to say names (Which is a little dumb given that they're all simple names mostly) and some just wanted more recognizable names and so on. For example them changing Lutz to Noah which lost Rune's connection to him was completely pointless except to screw up story tie-ins.

Rune doesn't have efess at this stage of the game. Getting efess at this stage of the game would require game genie codes for XP gaining or long hours of training.

He does if you level up Chaz to a certain point - and it's not an unreasonable level. I'm not sure what the "trigger" levels are, but something causes Rune, upon second meeting, and the fifth party members to skyrocket in level, depending upon Chaz's level at the corresponding points in the game.
