I used to work at the Redding, Calif, store fr '73 to '76. while attending the community college there.. Was so much fun! I even have a photo album of my Straw Hat pizza days.. We used to have a free salad bar we'd put out on weekdays from opening till about 2 PM.. I think Thursdays was all you could eat spaghetti deal.. We made our own meatballs (excellent!). The Redding Straw Hat had a stunning selection of import beer at the time..-about 90 different foreign beers. Plus the domestic and tap!
I just had some after 3 years when I was in monterey .. It was alot better back then I recently had it from one in walnut creek so shitty , couldve gotten round table about the same price
I remember 30 years ago having a StrawHat (too bad it's gone). Eating their damn good pizza while watching Laurel and Hardy classics on a projector screen. Loved it!
I work at a Straw Hat in Rodeo, CA! And I still like the food and eat it all the time! That's saying something! And no... the pizzas are not made out of straw hats... and we don't wear straw hats... !! and it's not HARD hats.. its HOT hats.. and they are hellaaaa good! =] We need to get a new commercial.. hasn't been one for years.
The SHP in San Jose, back in the late 70's, had this weekly NFL promo...With a large pitcher of soda (or beer when it was sold at the time), the customer received a mini, plastic NFL football helmet. One week it was 49ers, the next would be Dallas, etc.,
Straw Hat sold a ton of $20 coupon books in castro valley and then closed the restaurant a few weeks later.... A TOTAL RIP OFF! when i contacted them....no response! DONT EVER BUY ONE OF THEIR COUPON BOOKS!
There's still some Straw Hat locations in SoCal! I couldn't believe it! I found one in the city of Chino in San Bernardino County. It's on Philadelphia Avenue. The pizza rocks!
there are 2 in the central valley, one is in the town i live in (lindsay, ca), and the other is 3 miles away( exeter, ca). yes i agree, IT IS THE BEST PIZZA AROUND!!
I had no idea the chain still existed. I figured when my local one closed that the chain was dead. Los Angeles is a brutal market to a lot of businesses.
That was Straw Hat's tie-in to it's name... and it was the forerunner of the Hot Pocket.... really it was a silly name but it stuck, and they still make them today... The Ham & Cheese is the best.
I thought it was already on there, but I checked and it wasn't so I just put it up. Don't know why the sound drops out in the middle.
All the commercials I put up here are also on Divx Stage 6, which has the best on-line playback quality and are easiest for the layperson to save to DVD (you need a compatible player though), and on Google Video which gets the best-quality downloads for DVD though you need to know the secret for doing that.
I think even in the 1970's and 1980's even when the Chuck E. Cheese's chain was being launched some Straw Hat Pizza locations showed old time movies and cartoons on a projector screen like the Ground Round chain used to do in the 1970's-early 1990's.
Yeah, I used to love those. They used those film loop cartridge projectors, one near me had 3 of them that were set to play sequentially over and over, they later replaced them with a projection TV.
did anyone ever notice...not only was life, music and everything else in this world better in the mid to late 70s...but the food was too! i may be odd for thinking that...but it was!

I thought Straw Hat in YC was next to the movie theater. Now it is part of the Toyota dealership.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Was the hot hat introduced in 1975 ?
ghostchantxx 4 years ago
You're right it was September of 1975. They were pretty good too. LOL my first job, a busboy at Straw Hat!

What was the point of calling it a ''hot hat'' ?

Do you have the circa early 1980's Straw Hat Pizza TV commercial with Tim Conway in it that you can post on YouTube?

I've got at least one of those, I'll try to get that up soon.
