do you own this beauty? I saw a duesenberg once. Also a model J. It was being restored over in the seattle area. No paint, no mirrors or lights. I just saw it in the window of a repair shop. It was really quite surprising to see it, as the shop often works on modern european cars. The motor looked very intact. It is nice to see a video of one running!
You obviously aren't the kind of person that these beautiful cars were meant for. This is a work of art and a money is no object car. MPG is what poor people worry about.
And obviously you're a Bailed-Out Wall Street broker who can afford one today, forgetting that precisely all that Wall Street junk bonds irresponsibility of the 1930's brought these cars and sank the whole country into the Great Depression.
You're obviously free to buy me any classic you can afford (do you even own one?), if you're into impossing my automotive tastes. Thanks, Uncle McDuck.
Nah. When rich I'd still steer away from that. I'm one who prefers to pamper and service my cars far less time than what I will get of actual driving time. I don't sit in my porch with a beer watching a parked car. Maybe when I'm sixty. Golden era muscle, german sportscars, italian exotics and the occasional japanese RWD coupe will remain my thing. Thanks for the wishful thinking, though!
@flurry i can see your point of view, and respect that :). a car like this is an investment. and wll only appreciate, ( like the italian exotics lol) . tbh if i had a car of this calibre, id not be drinking beer. perhaps something a bit more idk refined.
@TheSomethingIsh agreed. i think though because it was founded around the great depression, and its LIMITED clientele, thats what killed it. had it not been for the depression, id say theyd have been around far longer.
All Duesenbergs had 3 speed Non-schronized transmissions? Does that mean you had to double clutch between each gear? Or was there a range where you could 'slip' from one gear to another without double clutching? I remember reading years ago that Dueseies were reputed to top 102 mph in 2nd gear. They have always been exquisite autos! The Auburn museum is my favorite!
@whammond511 I don't know about Duesenbergs, but I drove semi truck for a while, they all had transmissions without synchronizers, therefore double clutching and "gear jamming" was required. It was very difficult to do it smoothly. My guess is any transmission without synchronizers would require double clutching. If you listen to the end of this vid, it appears the driver has some difficulty shifting, not uncommon in un-synchronized transmissions.
lame ass honda and scion peopl passing YOU? WTF is wrong with them? do they know that if they hit you there is no way in hell they can afford to fix it
@BigHrdB Always a heckler in the crowd. First off, it wasn't directed toward you unless you own the auto. If not, mind your own business. For a car of this class. the video should have been done more professionally.
THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!! Just listen to that gearbox. I love that. Most people say: Ow what stupid: It whines and it crunches in gear. BUT that is just what makes is so special. That's what an old car is all about! :D Love your Duesy. Great restoration, great engine, great model and a great car!!!
@Jespertichelaar Actually, I've found audio systems often alter the natural sound of the engines, etc. Watching Duesies live (that were in great shape) and then hearing my playback of them sounded lousy. The cars were flawless - no sound at all. Then when they opened up on purpose, it was a fantastic deep macho rumbling, far superior to any auto I've heard - "muscle", racing, etc - no strain whatsoever. No metallic whining, which poor audio often translates.
@theOlLineRebel That can be possible! I've never heard a Duesenberg in real. Here in Holland you never see them. We have been to the ACD museum, that was really beautiful. You are lucky to have heared these cars in real.
@Jespertichelaar I have been to the ACD also, but 20 years ago. 2 years in a row for the big ACD festival/auction (they were the best times of my life, totally relaxed). That is where I got to hear many Duesies - or NOT hear them, rather! The parades were really nice for that - and we have it on video (where you can tell the difference between video and real life).
Beautiful, gorgeous, a priceless classic.

Cosmetic restoration? Who cares about that? Now a test drive after a full mechanical restoration would make an interesting video.

I love classic cars, with this era wa too much of everything!
Too much gilding, weight, size, noise...
The driver is lucky enough to get 2 MPG crusing on that inmense 8-cylinder.
I'd stick to post-war (1947) cars onwards.
