I started KLove Radio's challenge (listening to only christian music for a month to see how much more focused on God you are) on the 2nd. Around the 12th, I was really starting to miss my favorite band, Dashboard Confessional. On my shuffle, I heard a Jars of Clay song, and decided I'd have to check them out. As of the 13th, Jars of Clay is my new favorite band. Just goes to show how God will draw near to you if you leave the world behind. Praise Him forever! =)

@chakaling Do your research and you'll find out they aren't the same. Yaweh MEANS Lord. But Allah isn't the God of the Jews and Christians. Jews and Christians believe in the exact same God (Yaweh), just not the same Messiah (Jesus). Muhammad wanted to be a Jew (he used to pray toward Jerusalim and not Mecca), but for some reason he had a "vision" and started a whole new religion, that was a mixture of Judiasim, Christianity, and something else.
YHWH is the proper given name to the Abrahamic God, also called the tetragramaton (the four letters) is quoted in the Tanakh and doesn't mean lord at all. The Hebrew word for Lord is Adonai, which is quoted largely at the hebrew bible.
By all accounts of history, Islam is descendant from the Jewish and Christian teachings and god is essentially the very same, where Allah, Adonai, Lord, Deo etc. are just titles.

@XxBallerina4ChristxX Are you aware that Judaism, Islam, and Christianity are Abrahamic religions; meaning they all worship the same god? That "Allah" is Arabic for "God"?
Despite all this, all 3 religions have called God many things; Yahweh, Adonai, Jehovah, Allah, Shen, Ottoman, etc. All of them aren't names, they are different words meaning "God" or "The Lord" etc.
But if you think your English take on a middle-eastern religion is 100% right, who am I to care?
@XxBallerina4ChristxX "Allah" is "God" in Arabic. If you went back to the Old and New Testament regions, God would have predominantly been referred to as Allah. Other names for him include Jehova, Yahweh, and Elah.
Also, God didn't get himself killed and rise from the dead, that was a portion of Him, His son. But why a universe creating God requires human sacrifice to abolish sin, who knows? I'll just stick with my theory that he's sick in the head. That at least explains the rest of the Bible.
@saltesc actually, Jehova wasnt really a name for God, Yehweh is Gods name, and the jews took the do not use my name in vain rule so seriously, that they just never said it, so they ended up changing the spelling in the bible, so it would read a little differently when they read it, so that they wouldnt accidentally say it, and throug translations into greek, latin, aramaic, and then english, it became Jehova
@CheezeFTW I know the bible far greater than either of you do and probably will ever make the effort to. I was a Christian for 19 years, studied at bible college, and was a missionary and youth pastor for several years. I've had John 3 memorised since I was nine but ironically, the more you know about the Bible, the harder it is to understand that the God depicted in there exists and additionally loves us. I'm no atheist, I believe in God, I just don't believe in any of man's fucked up religions
@saltesc i feel really sad about that, to think that you, a christian messenger for God, would talk about God in this blasphemous way. What made you turn from him, in case you haven't realised, if God made it so easy to understand him and believe he was real, he wouldn't be God. God is confusing, hard to grasp, extremely exasperating, yet, thats why he's God isn't it?
@Bilbzizcool If God made it so easy to understand Him and believe He was real, He would be a loving and caring God. Instead we have to take a winding narrow road to get to this love, a road billions of souls will never get the chance to find and subsequently burn. During the bible, have you ever wondered what happened to all the civilisations that WEREN'T part of the tribe of Judah (well we know God killed them all at every chance), let alone a part of the tiny middle-east or even Afro-Eurasia?
@Bilbzizcool As I just told your friend @CheezeFTW; I too believe in God. Just not the one in Judaism, Catholicism, Islam, and Christianity (yes, they're the same guy based ont he same scriptures). The Abrahamic God is a sadistic monster and it turns out Jesus might not have actually been of Judah lineage; at least that's what God's "chosen people" believe (the Jews). @iOhBeeCityx what proof do you have, there was a big bang that created the earth? Earth is a perfect difference from the sun. any closer, we're fried. any further away, we're frozen. Humans and animals are to perfect to match the environment for a big bang to have created us. any thing you would like to fight back with?
@iOhBeeCityx :) 'faith is the virture of the absurd' - S. Kierkegaard...Is your theological statement something that is based on a Doctorate in Theology or just a basic high school knowledge, that has more or less developed into assumptions propogated by a Christophobic Western world?
Jars has always done what they wanted, and the message of God is loud IMO, not insanely "heavy" in the sense that we know it, but it has a loudness about it :) so in response to frosty, I love those songs, but JoC's talent expands beyond those things too!
I edit videos and I'm going to school for video production.
I knew this song was special right when I heard it. I feel God pulling me towards it to make a music video or a movie with this song someday. I just feel him continuing to tell me that THIS is what I need to do. THIS is how I can show the world JESUS, through this song and my video production skills. I'm excited to see where God is going to place me once I start film school......
they became so loud dang! what happened to those mellow soft songs like frail, he, and river constantine? i mean i know they have to change their style to innovate but it doesnt mean they have to go all rockstar about it
This song is sacriligious? What are you talking about? The song is very clear that we need a hero (Jesus) to save us from ourselves. For those of you who hate on Jars of Clay please remember that if they went mainstream secular label they would be making millions. They choose to promote Jesus and trust me they take a hit for it in popularity and money.
Taximino, i don't think it's ur place to judge whether JOC are of God or not. I know that their music have blessed me a lot and i believe they have been a blessing to 1000s more. So in the end they will be judged according the stewardship they made of the gift God gave them.
This song is sacrilegious. PERIOD. It has nothing to do with your sucking up remarks such as "Oh, Jars of Clay raises jesus, the savior, holy lord almighty etc..."
Haha, look at these guys fighting. This is why after 17 years I stopped being a Christian.
33,820 denominations, 11 major versions of "the word", and a god that only reveals himself if you know where to look and how to maintain your complicated lifestyle.
Life is a lot more peaceful and hopeful when you simply admire it and everything around you. If that will send me to hell, so be it. I wouldn't want to be with the disgusting monster that would make that decision anyway.
I only argue with ignorance. The thing is, you do have it right when you say we should admire the things around us, that's how I find God. Not through living by a set of rules. Well okay, if there are any rules I live by, it's this: God First, Others Second, and I'm Third.
It's sad because most Christians today make it a whole rules thing that God won't love you if you don't do this and this and this. Which isn't true. God still loves you, even if you don't believe.
And a PS, God doesn't make the decision to send us to hell. We choose to believe or not to believe. Hell is seperation from God. If we don't want to be with God, then we won't. Simple as that. The decision is ours, not His. He gave us the choice and we make it for ourselves.
Oh please. If He can create the universe in 6 days He can make a place where nice people (that he also made knowing their future) that don't believe in him get to go. It is His decision to send people to hell by deciding to create the two ridiculous outcomes.
Look up Norman Borlaug. That man is now in hell. You nor anyone in human history will ever do more good in their life than that man.
The system is flawed by ego. It's immoral to even us humans and we're supposed to be the conflicted ones.
@saltesc but doesn't that mean that God really loved us? He knew that we were going to turn evil and that people like you would flip him off as total rubbish. Did that stop him from creating you or me? No, obviously because we're alive. He loved us so much he created us and then died for us, and yet there are still people like you dissing him, he doesn't care, you are the coin he hasn't found yet, the missing sheep. Recognise that as love.
@Bilbzizcool If the Christian God was real and He did care, He wouldn't have pointlessly put a tree in the middle of His garden. He created sin. He made us flawed knowing we'd eat from that tree. Yet He still put it there for absolutely no reason other than to see the creation He apparently loves so much doom themselves for eternity. Yeah, that's true love right there. Then He goes on to kill 3.5million during the course of the bible, all because we ate a piece of fruit from His aimless tree.
@saltesc thats looking at the tree literally, some people (me included) believe that the tree was a metaphor, a way moses used to make it easier to understand the downfall of man. Your also missing an important part, God created adam innocent, not flawed, It was the devil disguised as a serpent who lead them astray. he lead Eve to Think and see that she was naked and in turn tell adam. The devil made the flaw of humans come into being, not God.
@Bilbzizcool A metaphor doesn't change the conditions. And making an intelligent creature, a guardian of earth and all other creatures, but allowing it to be susceptible to talking snakes—that's pretty flawed to me. Not to mention how you and I and every one before us has had to deal with God's grudge against Adam and Eve for thousands of years. This wonderful system that burns you for eternity; not because of how good or bad you are, but whether or not you stroke God's ego by believing in Him.
@saltesc Talking snakes? It was the devil, he introduced the idea of our nakedness, God didn't make us susceptible to it, the devil introduced it, and we accepted it. God didn't have a grudge against us, he punished us cause Adam disobeyed him but if he had a grudge against us then he wouldn't come and die for us would he? And in several places in the bible it says that God loves everyone, even sinners. So how can you say it's only about whther we believe in him or not. He loves you either way.
@Bilbzizcool Oh, so as God's creation, Satan can manipulate our minds just as easily? Awesome. Great work there God. Did we ever really have a chance then? Between that and the tree that didn't have to be there—at least make it not look so appealing God—it's like He wanted us to get fucked up from the start; and surprise, we did. It's the first story in the bible. Create man, man screws up in a matter of days; all the while God saw the whole thing coming. And "love" is an eternal lake of fire.
@saltesc God made us in the image of him, to know and respect knowledge. As humans we want to know more, when the devil gave us the idea to look and see it looked apealing. He didn't want it to happen, he knew it would, but he didn't want it too. God did see the whole thing coming, so why didn't he not create us. hmmm... because he loved us when we weren't there!
@Bilbzizcool Oh, why the hell did God send Jesus to die for us? He forgave and spared everyone in Nineveh because they fasted and wore sack cloth. He created the fucking universe. The only solution He could think of, with no surprise, resulted in killing someone via a complicated religious ritual of sacrifice. He can do anything, blink away sin or even Satan—because He sure created them that way—but he can only save the world by crucifying Himself personified in human flesh? Weak and sadistic.
@saltesc In agreement with my friend, God sent Jesus to die for us so that we didn't have to die. if you remember, God had to destroy the world because the world was filled with people who disrespected him and everyone else. So he flooded the world. Then, becaused he was so sad about destroyin us, he promised not to do it again. So instead, he sent his son to die for us, instead of us dying. Not a ritual, a completion of promise,
What do I need a hero for? Why do we all need a hero? Humanity is doing a great job at progressively looking after itself seeming God is too busy putting His son's face on cheese toast than saving the world. We get it, some guy and girl I never met from thousands of generations ago shouldn't have eaten that fruit He put there for no reason—can He stop creating us just to kill us and send us to hell?
I came here because I used to listen to these guys and Hard Rain was on TV.
@saltesc have you ever read a Bible or felt God's true love. He cares and try to reach people but they turn away they reject him. If people would just hear God's voice and reach to him they would see the true. But it is hard in to sometimes because there are people word teach the word wrong. p.s. God loves you to.
@alex3804 I have read the Bible twice directly and consistently reviewed passages for over a decade. At one point I was accepted into Bible college. So yes, I have read it. I also thought I had heard/felt God, but I've since grown up and realised that these were false and coincided with perfect explanations I simply didn't know of at the time. The more I got into Christianity, the more I realised it's man-made and the God is a dictating monster out to kill people.
@hafpipe I can fight freely, I'm not on the same team. From the faith that takes pride in love and peace for one another, yet is internally comprised with scrutiny and personal egos, apparently there's a splinter in my eye?
As for what makes a Christian? I have no opinion of that, nor am I foolish enough to consider having one. Read Matthew 22:37-38 and Matthew 5-7 and you've found the answer. That's not an opinion, that's just simply how it is and whether I agree or disagree with it is futile.
@hafpipe No one should classify themselves as a christian. Christians were given their name by people who looked in to their lives and could see that they were following Christ. Therefore the title Christian should not be worn as loosely as it is today. If you are a christian others will see it, there is no need to claim it.
i just put your quote on my calendar. i totally agree by the way, i want people to see the good christians DO rather than the talk of how good they say they are. which is bad because so many people (including myself) do the latter.
Wow taximo, I can't believe you think you have the right to judge anyone. You're not my God, I don't pray to you so I'm just going to ignore that lost souls comment. My wife made the point that it's no use arguing with you, it'll just be a waste if time. She's right.
taximo, instead of judging and condemning other Christians according to your standards (emphasis on your), why don't you go out and obey what Christ commanded us which is to love God and love eachother. Help someone in need by being a hero in their life. Stop the "holier than thou" stuff, it's annoying.
First off, I never heard them say that. Secondly, just because you disagree with Pat Robertson doesn't mean you're not after God's Glory. To try and put down someone for simply disagreeing is to admit that you yourself are not after God's Glory. "Before you remove the speck from your brother's eye, remove the plank from your own." I'm not saying I'm perfect, but it really just ticks me off when I see christians acting like you are.
@crosscountrytc ,.one thing is to disagree but another is to mock him on his "pact comment"...
Did you see the interview?....since his original interview i have seen Haitian pastors have come out and agreed which Pat Robertson... although most liberal media outlets will not cover these stories or comments..Do your homework you liberal heretick
you guys have no idea the spiritual battle that is being fought in here in the US..and your so far away from sound doctrine that returning to scripture on any topic is radical and judgmental.
Paul said it in 2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
I live my life by this order: God First, Others Second, and I'm Third.
So who's the radical and judgemental one here? Have you even been to Kansas at all? Do you know what it's like down here? We know a lot more than you think we do. Are you really dealing with this out of love, because Paul also said that without love things are meaningless (1 Cor. Ch 13) or are you just dealing with things out of spite and bitterness?
I think it's talking about how Jesus is a rockin' out hero who we desperately need "to save us from ourselves", and he's the only one who can do it. Jesus' love isn't just a "get well" card, but an actual love that interacts with our daily life, something we need very much. this is just my take though
My interpretation is a bit different. I think the song is saying that we all tend to see that the world is wrong, but we do nothing about it. By doing nothing, we are becoming our own worst enemies. We sit and pray and wonder why God isn't doing anything about it, but if we'd stop taking ourselves so seriously and reach out to make connections beyond ourselves, God could work through us to make a better world. We have a decision: the world is going down-are we going to let it go down this way?
they are rly cool yeah. hitting number 1 on mainstream and christian is just unreal for any christian band. and I do believe it's about the rapture and the end times when jesus comes down to save the christians imo.
I think it's saying that we need God to change who we are and we need to let him grow in us and have our own lustful self pass away, did that make sense?
jars of clay's sound changes with each album (they're really adventurous!). But I've been listening to them for over 13yrs! and I absolutely love this song
Great melody, interesting words, and that Jars of Clay sound that keeps me coming back. A bit long, however. More lyrics would have been nice to fill it out.
This one is more instrumentally focused than it is lyrically. Take Me Higher from Good Monsters was the same way, and I was one of the few people who liked that song. I do admit, however, that the lyrics in this song are much better than the lyrics for Take Me Higher.

You guys help.
saltesc 1 year ago
I only argue with ignorance. The thing is, you do have it right when you say we should admire the things around us, that's how I find God. Not through living by a set of rules. Well okay, if there are any rules I live by, it's this: God First, Others Second, and I'm Third.
It's sad because most Christians today make it a whole rules thing that God won't love you if you don't do this and this and this. Which isn't true. God still loves you, even if you don't believe.
crosscountrytc 1 year ago
And a PS, God doesn't make the decision to send us to hell. We choose to believe or not to believe. Hell is seperation from God. If we don't want to be with God, then we won't. Simple as that. The decision is ours, not His. He gave us the choice and we make it for ourselves.
crosscountrytc 1 year ago
It's immoral to even us humans and we're supposed to be the conflicted ones.
saltesc 1 year ago
@saltesc but doesn't that mean that God really loved us? He knew that we were going to turn evil and that people like you would flip him off as total rubbish. Did that stop him from creating you or me? No, obviously because we're alive. He loved us so much he created us and then died for us, and yet there are still people like you dissing him, he doesn't care, you are the coin he hasn't found yet, the missing sheep. Recognise that as love.
Bilbzizcool 1 year ago

Bilbzizcool 1 year ago
@Bilbzizcool A metaphor doesn't change the conditions. And making an intelligent creature, a guardian of earth and all other creatures, but allowing it to be susceptible to talking snakes—that's pretty flawed to me. Not to mention how you and I and every one before us has had to deal with God's grudge against Adam and Eve for thousands of years. This wonderful system that burns you for eternity; not because of how good or bad you are, but whether or not you stroke God's ego by believing in Him.
saltesc 1 year ago
@saltesc Talking snakes? It was the devil, he introduced the idea of our nakedness, God didn't make us susceptible to it, the devil introduced it, and we accepted it. God didn't have a grudge against us, he punished us cause Adam disobeyed him but if he had a grudge against us then he wouldn't come and die for us would he? And in several places in the bible it says that God loves everyone, even sinners. So how can you say it's only about whther we believe in him or not. He loves you either way.
Bilbzizcool 1 year ago
@Bilbzizcool Oh, so as God's creation, Satan can manipulate our minds just as easily? Awesome. Great work there God. Did we ever really have a chance then? Between that and the tree that didn't have to be there—at least make it not look so appealing God—it's like He wanted us to get fucked up from the start; and surprise, we did. It's the first story in the bible. Create man, man screws up in a matter of days; all the while God saw the whole thing coming. And "love" is an eternal lake of fire.
saltesc 1 year ago
@saltesc God made us in the image of him, to know and respect knowledge. As humans we want to know more, when the devil gave us the idea to look and see it looked apealing. He didn't want it to happen, he knew it would, but he didn't want it too. God did see the whole thing coming, so why didn't he not create us. hmmm... because he loved us when we weren't there!
Bilbzizcool 1 year ago
@Bilbzizcool Oh, why the hell did God send Jesus to die for us? He forgave and spared everyone in Nineveh because they fasted and wore sack cloth. He created the fucking universe. The only solution He could think of, with no surprise, resulted in killing someone via a complicated religious ritual of sacrifice. He can do anything, blink away sin or even Satan—because He sure created them that way—but he can only save the world by crucifying Himself personified in human flesh? Weak and sadistic.
saltesc 1 year ago
@saltesc In agreement with my friend, God sent Jesus to die for us so that we didn't have to die. if you remember, God had to destroy the world because the world was filled with people who disrespected him and everyone else. So he flooded the world. Then, becaused he was so sad about destroyin us, he promised not to do it again. So instead, he sent his son to die for us, instead of us dying. Not a ritual, a completion of promise,
Bilbzizcool 1 year ago
@saltesc
aren't you listening?
we all need a hero. not just people who don't have faith EVERYONE we are ALL flawed. i don't want to fight you, i just wanted you to know that.
oh, and one more thing, how did you get to this song? just interested
BisforBrilliance1 9 months ago
@BisforBrilliance1
I came here because I used to listen to these guys and Hard Rain was on TV.
saltesc 9 months ago
@saltesc have you ever read a Bible or felt God's true love. He cares and try to reach people but they turn away they reject him. If people would just hear God's voice and reach to him they would see the true. But it is hard in to sometimes because there are people word teach the word wrong. p.s. God loves you to.
alex3804 5 months ago
@alex3804 I have read the Bible twice directly and consistently reviewed passages for over a decade. At one point I was accepted into Bible college. So yes, I have read it. I also thought I had heard/felt God, but I've since grown up and realised that these were false and coincided with perfect explanations I simply didn't know of at the time. The more I got into Christianity, the more I realised it's man-made and the God is a dictating monster out to kill people.
saltesc 5 months ago
@saltesc But are you not fighting too? Can I ask,.... how did you classify yourself as a Christian. In your opinion, what makes a Christian?
hafpipe 1 year ago 2
@hafpipe I can fight freely, I'm not on the same team. From the faith that takes pride in love and peace for one another, yet is internally comprised with scrutiny and personal egos, apparently there's a splinter in my eye?
As for what makes a Christian? I have no opinion of that, nor am I foolish enough to consider having one. Read Matthew 22:37-38 and Matthew 5-7 and you've found the answer. That's not an opinion, that's just simply how it is and whether I agree or disagree with it is futile.
saltesc 1 year ago
@hafpipe No one should classify themselves as a christian. Christians were given their name by people who looked in to their lives and could see that they were following Christ. Therefore the title Christian should not be worn as loosely as it is today. If you are a christian others will see it, there is no need to claim it.
ImpartialReality43 1 year ago
@ImpartialReality43 Let me clarify, my words were a little ambiguous. Christians were given their names by outsiders looking into their lives.
ImpartialReality43 1 year ago
@ImpartialReality43
i just put your quote on my calendar. i totally agree by the way, i want people to see the good christians DO rather than the talk of how good they say they are. which is bad because so many people (including myself) do the latter.

" these are terrible ideas" their opinion to Pat Robertson comments on the haiti earthquake.....
Just like i thought all these so called gospel christian actors are not after GODS Glory but themselves.
taxmino 2 years ago
First off, I never heard them say that. Secondly, just because you disagree with Pat Robertson doesn't mean you're not after God's Glory. To try and put down someone for simply disagreeing is to admit that you yourself are not after God's Glory. "Before you remove the speck from your brother's eye, remove the plank from your own." I'm not saying I'm perfect, but it really just ticks me off when I see christians acting like you are.

you guys have no idea the spiritual battle that is being fought in here in the US..and your so far away from sound doctrine that returning to scripture on any topic is radical and judgmental.
Paul said it in 2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

Save us from ourselves
Save us from our fear
When the sirens wail,
we need a hero here
I think it's talking about how Jesus is a rockin' out hero who we desperately need "to save us from ourselves", and he's the only one who can do it. Jesus' love isn't just a "get well" card, but an actual love that interacts with our daily life, something we need very much. this is just my take though
shackrocks 2 years ago 2
My interpretation is a bit different. I think the song is saying that we all tend to see that the world is wrong, but we do nothing about it. By doing nothing, we are becoming our own worst enemies. We sit and pray and wonder why God isn't doing anything about it, but if we'd stop taking ourselves so seriously and reach out to make connections beyond ourselves, God could work through us to make a better world. We have a decision: the world is going down-are we going to let it go down this way?
