@arminask Yes sir. The video of the movement was done in bad lighting, makes the whole video have a strange hue to it, I'll have to make another video soon and post it. I also have a 232 and a couple A.B.P. alligator straps.
@arminask My mistake - the one in the video is a replica - I had bought it to see if I liked wearing it enough every day to purchase the real one, which I eventually did. The fake is pretty well done though and is quite accurate.
@Nebraskahusker23 I've got a pam111 replica myself, supposed to be the most accurate you can get (from watch forums). the watch is very nice, but not sure if I could part with 5k for a real one just yet, maybe after uni :)
@arminask I've received multiple compliments when wearing my replica. Unless you have a magnifying loop and very keen eye, you won't be able to tell it's a fake just by seeing it on someone's wrist. Plus 5k is quite a lot for a real 111. I mean a Unitas movement isn't that special - you can get a Victorinox with one. A good thing about Panerais is that they retain their value extremely well, especially the special editions.
@Nebraskahusker23 The watch definitely catches the eye, probably due to the chunky build and the polished case. Not sure if many people actually know what watch it is :)
Only issue I have is the manual wind up, runs for about 24 hours or so (probably more on the real thing). I think the next watch will definitely have to be an automatic.
@arminask Whenever mine is fully wound up it will go for ~48 hours. The real thing is about the same as that. As far as I know the movement in my replica isn't the real Unitas movement, probably just an exact clone all the way down to the power reserve
watch is ugly cause you can't afford it .. it's a piece of engineering masterpiece and a perfection of someones dream.. time is the most precious thing.. but i guess some people are just too dumb to see art and hours passing by.. stick to booze and farmville ;)
Weard how coments go. The guy who would'nt spent $100 on a good diner are the one dispiting that marvelius piece of ingenering. Yes you can have more accurate time with a $2 quartz watch but you'll be fare away of perfection. I think you cant get that.
To some extend, that is true, but when you take into account that the balance isn't freesprung and that it isn't a lubrication free escapement, it kinda' levels out. Lubrication is today the biggeste obstacle for accurate timekeeping. The oil change in viscocity over time, and therefor the friction in the bearings change. This leads to unaccurate timekeeping, in the long run: 5-7 years. But in the short run, it does help elimate these factors.
The most accurate mechanical movement, must be a clock. Because all sources of error , due to the movement beeing moved around are gone. Its stationary. And my quess in clocks would be the Genevan Observatorys clocks, made by LeRoy. They were, before moved to the museeum, stationed underground ind constant temperature, humidity and pressure. No one was allowed down there, and they were wound remotly through a motor, so the minute changes a person, entering the room, made was eliminated.
But if you mean which mechanisal movement for a wristwatch, to use for normal wear, i would say Greubel Forseys 30 degrees tourbillon. The 30 degree slope of the balance wheel combined with a 4 minute revolution time gives the most benefits on the balance, while maintaining a movement height suitable for a modern wristwatch.... 3 Axis tourbillons like Thomas Pretchers' are in the same league...
in the days before the digital and quartz movements all there was were the mechanical movements. They also didn't have the sophisticated equipment to make balance wheels that were perfectly balanced in all planes. So any timepiece that was moved around a lot as on a wrist or a rocking ship was prone to inaccuracies from the effects of gravity as the orientation of the watch changed. That was what prompted the invention of the tourbillon. It evened out the effects of gravity.
@happykat39 but I only use mechanical movements, very cheap ones, and I hit +1 second a week or so in any position sans tourbillon. Don't get me wrong, I still totally want one for the cool factor, but when a low-end Orient automatic is as accurate as even modern day high-end tourbillons, I have to question the utility of it. But again, not hating, I love them. You may have a point insofar as during their heyday perhaps inferior machining tech kept them from accurate conventional movements

wow. I know this is obsolete already, but it's still unbelievably impressive. I wonder if this really enhances the accuracy of a mechanical movement.

it does, this eliminates the effects of gravity on the watches movement and springs, truly amazing
