they're not actually playing everything we're seeing here.... the second time the main lyrical guitar theme comes back around, there's only one guitarist, but you hear two completely different and independent guitar parts. it's at 3:32

Besides, the 3:50 part also uses it, you people just fail to notice. The guitar is the melodic backing, and the buildup element. I agree some of the parts were it's in heavier use could be a bit less distorted, but it works really well like 90% of the time.
