i saw the director talking about making this once ,apparently the girl was "just" a generic model who they asked to just "improvise" as that was the hit of the day to have the "dance" video.and he said she blew everyone away by doing this in 1 TAKE!

they apparently made little or no money off this track which is kind of a shame because it's become a classic. Devo claimed for the sample as did Nina Simone's estate. I think the chord progression is so simple Devo probably took more than they deserved (seeing as transposing to piano COMPLETELY changes the character). Oh well. L&B are pretty clever with their production so hopefully we'll see more classics!
