The experiment I liked most when I was at Dryden with the XL was sucking laminar flow off the surface of the wing with a vacuum compressor in the fuselage. You can see a good look at the glove at 2:13
Shadow is right; this was in computation with the McDonald Douglas F-15 E. The reason why it didn't win the bidding contract is because: 1. the first prototypes could not super cruise 2. The F-15 E does carry a greater payload at a much longer range.
But the truth is. The LM F16 E/F would have been a great replacement for the older F-16 C and D's. Even more so, fit this with a Pratt & Whitney PW 202 engine and you got Super Cruise.
This plane is pretty amazing, my instructor told me today that this plane wouldn't stall over 15+ degrees of AoA.. pretty amazing. I'm sure it also has it downsides..
The delta wing on the F-16XL would make it more stable, considering the F-16 was intensional designed to not be stable so it could do all the fancy things you all love. The F-16XL would be a nuetter version, the F-15e was by far the better choice. Where the DoD dropped the ball was with the "Super Tomcat program"
And I've heard that beginning with the F-16C block 25 all the F-16's have an RCS of 1sqm. Then I assume that given its wing configuration, the F-16 XL must have an even smaller RCS
It has the wing configuration of the Draken.Sorry F-16 fans but this can be seen with the naked eye.Anyway the Swedish planes have been long used as a source of inspiration by various aircraft producers.Just look at the Saab Viggen vs. Eurofighter Typhoon\Dassault Rafale. The examples with Russians and Americans using eachother's tech are classic. Also with the French: the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger and the Delta Dart have been copied by the French in the form of the Mirage III
Now Polish Government bought the F-16XL project and on the beginning of next Year after a few modernizations ( avionics, lighter and stealth technology build materials - like composits..etc) they will create multi-role jet fighter of 5th generation....bad news for Americans they sold best project with biggest evolution potential for small cash ....F-22 eurofighter and Su - 35 will have a dangerous opponent from middle of Europe.....hehehe
@radoskor288 No danger we created it and we know how to kill it its second hand not important thats why we dumped it off on lil poland! Its still nice plane for small nation .
WOW!!!! if i had my own private air force id buy this plane! i thought the scale model i saw 20 yrs ago was just for fun, it was real after all! who was the numb nut who cancelled this model? if this had vector nozzles this could be far superior to those sukhoi plane killers. 5 stars!!!!!
I believe that part of the reason for this decision is that the F-16XL was a much more expensive conversion. Also, at the time that the F-15E was introduced, the US wasn't seeking a highly maneuverable fighter that was capable of supercruising.
If the USAF chose the F-16XL rather than the modified F-15 as a fighter bomber it would have been used to its fullest potential because of its larger bomb payload & fuel capacity. But history happens otherwise, what a shame...
the benefit of the delta wing desing was originalLy developed for greater mobility in supersonic speeds and the fuel capacity was also greatly increased as a sort of side effect, man i love that machine, go F-16 XL
I understand that Taiwan and other countries were interested and listed this as a must have for design requirements, but I am not aware of AIM7 capabilities.
This is a great video. My dad was took this plane on its 1st ever flight in 1981. I will have to show him the cool things they are doing with the same plane 25+ years later.
the f-16XL for sonic bombs attenuation, then your video is nothing we can right at google "f-16XL" and we will see all of this pictures, show us something better.

Are you sure it was Typhoon who fathered this?
I don't know man, it may look like the Gripen may have had his hands under the Falcon's skirt first.
myquill23 9 months ago
@myquill23 F-16XL was the grand daddy of both the Typhoon and the Gripen. :P
wingman011111 9 months ago
@wingman011111
Yes, I have been hearing that a lot..
There were reports that this plane served in wars as early as the Bronze Age in 3000BC. Quite a spectacular tour of duty, I must say.

@myquill23 When God said "let there be light" and F-16XL Pilot fliped the switch! :D

we should have more delta wing fighters like the f-106

put a powerful thrust vector engine and LO techonology on the XL and you got a killer plane

Two of the potentally greatest jets of the
20th century that never went into full productions: The F-16XL and F-20 Tigershark.
What a shame!
22250rmntn 3 years ago 2
Actually, the F-15 Active and F18 HARV are the two I would pick. The F20 didn't have BVR capabilities.
Spadadiforza 3 years ago
F-20 did have BVR air-to-air combat capability. It was designed to be able to use the AIM-7 Sparrow missile.
