It is not strange. Well, it kinda is. to you folks that dont live in st. louis, here's a fact. The only reason it goes up then over is because of its shape. Also, for the kids, I have been up there. Riding up and down its kinda like an amusment park ride.
I last went on this when I was about 10 years old. I am now 42 and am going tomorrow, 11/14/09. This video is exactly how I remember it way back when. I remember being in a tiny shell and this helps me to remember. Ugh, I remember not really enjoying this experience. Then being at the top, I remember being able to feel the arch moving in the wind. I will be glad when it's over, IF we get up there tomorrow. At least I can say I did it once!!
the intersting thing is that the insurance company estmated that said that 11 people would die during it's construction. However not a single person died.
Washington monument: Constructed from 1848-56 and 1876-84.
Statue of Liberty: 1886
St. Louis arch: 1963-1965
I didn't realize the Washington Monument was quite that old. I guess they made the passageways bigger for that monument; I've never been there to compare. But the Statue of liberty stairs and viewing area are much, much smaller than those at the arch.
What kind of building is this? Is it a museum or what? I cannot read it from the comments. Thanks for your help

wonder how many medical emergencies they have
had in this arch elevator? and at the top!
I went ten years ago and thought I'd hyperventilate it is so claustrophobic!
Washington Monument was not nearly as bad.

Statue of Liberty is way smaller... it has everything to do with people being quite a bit smaller half a century ago and longer.

those elevators were scary! when i was there, they were all jiggly, so they had to stop the elevators for like 5 mins till the wind died down.

This elevator is similar to the Luxor Elevator.
