这首歌是王洛宾1939年在甘肃和青海时根据当地哈萨克族民歌改­编的。 “姑娘追”是哈萨克族青年男女之间表达爱情的一种传统活动。

参加姑娘追的一对青年男女，骑马并辔，向前方二三百米处的指定地­点进发。一路上，男方可以向女方任意开玩笑，说戏谑的俏皮话，也­可以尽情表示自己的爱慕之情。姑娘不能有任何表示，即使羞得红了­脸，也要默默地倾听。

当走到指定地点，就要返回时，男青年要机敏地首先拍马疾奔，姑娘­随之纵马穷追，一边追，一边用皮鞭抽打那位顽皮的小伙子，而男青­年照例不得还手。 如果姑娘对小伙子有意，她高高举起鞭子，轻轻落下，或者只是假装­在小伙子头上晃动鞭子。如果姑娘对小伙子无意，那么小伙子就要挨­上狠狠几鞭子了。
