@scotjack The video is very good! I love to see actual performances. You would have had to have a position in the balcony (?) to catch the pianist! Cannot stop listening to this movement...third time tonight, as I just discovered your very interesting channel.
@Wavewolfaroha Unfortunately, when we, the parents of the kids attending this summer music school, gathered that evening in this little church in Barga for this free concert by the teachers, our numbers augmented by a few locals, we had no idea that we were to witness such a fine performance, Had I known, I would have used a much better camera, and found a better position. Alas, there was no balcony.
I started this video with a sceptical attitude, having seen many of the other videos, however Slutsky in the quintet did catch my eye. I finished the video with a tear-ridden chin and nose, love in my heart, and rush through my arms.
I'm playing movts. 2 and 3 in a course next week, after 6 days to learn them in, along with Mendelssohn's Piano Trio in C minor, and an orchestral part which I've yet to receive.
A truly mesmerising, gentle yet passionate, and a perfectly balanced performance.
@streamlinesofficial Thank you for your kind insightful comments, and good luck with your recital.
I am not a musician, but I am surprised that no one has commented on the fact that these musicians only came together less than a week before this performance, and could only rehearse after a full day of teaching.
Is it normal for professional musicians to perform at such a high level with so little time to rehearse?
@scotjack short rehearsal times are all too common - many times, the players would learn the pieces beforehand, and then have just a few days to sort out anything that needs sorting, and to get used to playing with each other.
Wow this is really fantastic! This is one of my favorite Dvorak pieces and you guys sound really good! Is there somewhere I could get the audio recording of this?
I am a violist and would very much like the opportunity to play this piece in the future. This is also the best recording of this movement on youtube. Favorite!!!
Thank you for your comment. What does "Dumka" mean?
I clearly remember during the live performance, that when the violist and pianist kept switching the theme back and forward between them, that it built up incredible tension. Dvořák was brilliant.
you can easily spot the brand name on the side. it's a widely perceived fact that yamahas tend to have bright sound with light action ideal for etudes or classical, fingery passages(maybe counted as opinion) but more difficult to create legato phrasing, nuanced tone color since they rather posses monotonous, single-dimensionally bright tones--the qualities in this case somehow due to pianist's superb control, seem to advantage high registered lyric passage w/out being everynote-so-clear.
How did I miss that?! You are obviously very knowledgeable on pianos. I know next to nothing, but along with the 200 or so other members of the audience who had the good fortune to hear this performance in this old church in Barga, we all knew we had heard something really special.
How a group of artists can meet each other for the first time one weekend, teach all day, rehearse a few evenings, (still find time to "party") and then perform like this, the following weekend, is amazing.
This is one of my favorite pieces of chamber music.Mirjam Tschopp is a friend of mine and she definitely plays the theme's opening statement very beautifully.
You are very fortunate to have such a talented and beautiful friend.
I have some video of her playing solo viola - Schubert, I think. Naturally from such a talented artist, her pitch is perfect, but her tone and phrasing transforms the performance from technically correct music, to pure art.
If you see her soon, please ask her if I may post some of it.
I am so glad you like it. If I have time I will post the final movement this weekend (or Monday latest). The third and fourth movements are incredible. Dvorak was brilliant.
Unfortunately not at this time. However my son may be performing one of his trios soon. (Of course, good though he is, he is not yet playing at the level of the world class artists in this video - see his Tzigane.) If you are interested, I would be happy to send you the DVD I made of this performance - the quality is much better.

Had I known beforehand that it would be so good, I would have had better equipment than my old Sony 8mm camcorder!

@Darknuts What is Pandora?
scotjack 1 year ago
@scotjack It's an internet radio station that plays songs according to your personal likes and dislikes.
arp12tube 3 months ago
@arp12tube Thanks, but I still do not fully understand. Did they play this video on a radio station?
scotjack 3 months ago
@scotjack No, I don't think they used this recording. What Darknuts heard was proabably some professional recording of this movement.
I'm playing this piece right now as cellist, and I must say it's one of my favorite classical peices.

thankyou soo much for this. It is a masterpiece. It makes me cry.

Dumka is a common nickname for this movement of this Piano Quintet.

it's amazing that pianist--Boris Slutsky--is producing such multi-colored palleted depth of tone on yamaha.
