Fantastic...learned by ear....how do you do that!!! I enjoy you playing the Joplin Rag....you give them a light hearted and casual performaance. I think they were meant that way. Yes the Joplin collection books are still available. I have found a sight on the web where you can download Joplin sheet music from the libarary of some university. Keep up the good work...
bazrrichi...I think the piece was (as I said) played very nicely. The rest was(Ok maybe a little silly ) but not meant to be taken seriously. You must have a very fragile sense of humour and when I see some of the stuff written on youtube I wonder why you would bother to comment.
Hello again.....I just left a comment on your terrific HELIOTROPE BOUQUET.
This is wonderful too, although it seems maybe like more of a "work in progress" than the Heliotrope.
BTW you do a great job of getting the notes from just LISTENING to the music. You got it almost totally right, and even what isn't right is good too. :-)
P.S. I'm surprised you've had trouble getting hold of the SHEET MUSIC. Why not get one of the "collected" editions of Joplin's works?
Maybe the best "collected" version is "Scott Joplin Collected Piano Works," put out by the New York Public Library in 1971, which is the edition I have. Not sure it's available any more though. But I see that SCHIRMER seems to have a current "complete" edition of Joplin's pieces, and also there's an edition by Carl Fischer (publisher) that includes most but not all the pieces.
I learned most of the songs I know by the time I was about 16... started playing at around age 7. Takes either a lot of natural talent or a lot of practice... in my case it was a lot of practice =)
Nicely done..good attention to the melodic line and at times you get into the "stomp" feel of the Rag. Which tells me that I guess you were a bit nervous but were able to "get into" the piece. We all have to deal with that, don't worry about it..just enjoy the fantastic music. The beauty of Scott Joplins music is that it transports us to feel, to an era, the signature of a great composer.
Keep it up and I look forwrad to your other postings.
Your playing is superb and I like your ragtime style a lot. Was wondering if you had learned the Sugar Cane Rag. I bet you can make it sound fabulous. Thanks!
sometimes I will do the same as you, i.e., I could not find the music score and I arrange by myself or I listened over and over and tried to do the score by myself. This piece is pleasing.
If you still want the sheet music, search google and try finding a canadian (.ca) website called "ragtimepiano". Don't know why YouTube doesn't allow URL's in comments, but I couldn't copy the link in this message ;). Contains almost the complete work of Joplin, along with a lot of other ragtime music. And some pieces that cannot be found at that site, might be found at ismlp (.org). Go on with the good work, I like your interpretation.
One of my favourite of Joplin's rags; I often am not terribly fond of his trios, but all the sections in this piece are attractive. Very good, especially since done without the sheet music. Maybe (as an alternate style of performance) try the piece a little slower, with a bit of a 'swing' rhythm. (You may like it. :) )
Great job. This is the 2nd Scott Joplin I've heard you play; excellent on both. You say you had a hard time finding the music, have you heard of "Collected Piano Works - Scott Joplin" ? It has many of his works in it.
I don't think rags should be played "light-hearted," but with great sensitivity bringing out the melancholy pathos beneath the light-hearted sound.

Beautiful, just beautiful. It shows, that the Gladiolus Rag is your favorite- you do show a lot of passion in the 3rd stanza, onward.
I'd love to see you post a video playing both the Pine Apple Rag and Solace, my favorite Joplin pieces.
Well done!

Dude, you've got to tidy up your livingroom before you start taping! The whole world (in theory) has been invited in. Great music though--five stars!

thats a real beauty!!! this and all other joplin stuff would be perfect club music for today! fun to dance to and juicy too!!!

This is my favorite Joplin rag too. Great interpretation. If you actually figured this out
by ear, that's amazing. If you want to hear probably
the best recording ever of Gladiolus, and all of his other popular rags, check out Scott Joplin: Piano Rags
by Joshua Rifkin.
You've motivated me to post a video response to this,
which I'll do as soon as I get a video camera!
