One of the greatest victories of Confederate Irish was Captain Richard W. Dowling, with 43 men armed with rifles and 6 small cannons defended Sabine Pass, Texas, in 1863 and defended against a Federal fleet trying to land 15,000 men. Dowling sank one gunboat, captured two others, and turned away the rest of the fleet. He took 400 prisoners and didn't take any losses. All the men got silver medals from Jefferson Davis.

Nah there were hardly any Irish Catholics-Celts who fought for the south. The ones who did were tiny minority Irish Catholics who went to U.S.A during the British Colonial times before 1800s. Most were ulster scots in the confederate army, and people of english ancestry. Well, not , not quite right. Most of the early wave of Irish immigrants to America were Protestants from Ulster. Most of the later waves were Catholics from all over the island.
As for the Irish originating in Scotland, you have it backwards. The Scoti were Irish. They settled in Caledonia and mixed with Picts. That mix, along with later immigrants, created the Galeic (Irish) speaking the Highlanders.
The Lowlands, of course, have a different history. There were non-Pictish Britons there, and later many Angles settled in the region. That's why Lallans is related to English, or is a dialect of English.
I'm leaving out the English, Norse, and Norman influences, of course.

Only a small percentage of the Ulster Irish were actually Scottish, most were from Northern England and Wales and from the London area who were dissenter of the Church of England. The Ulster Irish immigrated (who were Protestant, mainly Calvinists) in the 1700's. Many more of the native Irish (mainly Catholic) immigrated in the 1800's during the time of the famine. The Irish did not originate form Scotland.

@222macgregor What about the 100's of thousands that left the country during the famine, The whole country was hit by that, And during world war 1 a lot of people left Ireland for america in the south because there was no work (Other then joining the British military or inheriting a farm from your father), But up north there was ship building and linen industries for the war. If it was that big of a deal to the U.S., then they would have abolished it at the start of this nation. Also, even if the war had been avoided, I still dont see how anyone could honestly sit there and say that the Union would have been in any big hurry to abolish slavery.
@cyberplunge Actually, they wanted to abolish slavery in the beginning. But, in order for the constitution to pass all of the colonies had to agree on it. At this time, the original copy stated that the slaves should be freed. But Georgia and South Carolina objected to this. So they took that out. They wanted it done sometime before 1847, slavery was abolished.
From what i've know the union only used the freeing of all the blacks to politicly get an reason to attack the confedercy. The order that Lincoln put up was only formal, no slaves were freed.

Yeah it's wierd. I guess the bond that brought Catholics and Protestants together in the South in the ACW was that it wasn't just Catholic lands being invaded and it wasn't just protestant lands being invaded. It was both peoples' lands.

Nah there were hardly any Irish Catholics-Celts who fought for the south. The ones who did were tiny minority Irish Catholics who went to U.S.A during the British Colonial times before 1800s. Most were ulster scots in the confederate army, and people of english ancestry. Also minority of Irish Catholic Celts didn't realise they were fighthing against the Irish for the Union Army, neither did the Irish in the Union Army know either. My great great grandfather passed down stories & fought.

Well, not , not quite right. Most of the early wave of Irish immigrants to America were Protestants from Ulster. Most of the later waves were Catholics from all over the island.
As for the Irish originating in Scotland, you have it backwards. The Scoti were Irish. They settled in Caledonia and mixed with Picts. That mix, along with later immigrants, created the Galeic (Irish) speaking the Highlanders.

The Lowlands, of course, have a different history. There were non-Pictish Britons there, and later many Angles settled in the region. That's why Lallans is related to English, or is a dialect of English.
I'm leaving out the English, Norse, and Norman influences, of course.

Only a small percentage of the Ulster Irish were actually Scottish, most were from Northern England and Wales and from the London area who were dissenter of the Church of England. The Ulster Irish immigrated (who were Protestant, mainly Calvinists) in the 1700's. Many more of the native Irish (mainly Catholic) immigrated in the 1800's during the time of the famine. The Irish did not originate form Scotland.

Thank you for this video, bullyboy1863! It's too bad that vid's like these can't be posted without somone coming in and bringing up some lame comment about slavery. If it was that big of a deal to the U.S., then they would have abolished it at the start of this nation. Also, even if the war had been avoided, I still dont see how anyone could honestly sit there and say that the Union would have been in any big hurry to abolish slavery.

@cyberplunge Actually, they wanted to abolish slavery in the beginning. But, in order for the constitution to pass all of the colonies had to agree on it. At this time, the original copy stated that the slaves should be freed. But Georgia and South Carolina objected to this. So they took that out. They wanted it done sometime before 1847, slavery was abolished.

From what i've know the union only used the freeing of all the blacks to politicly get an reason to attack the confedercy. The order that Lincoln put up was only formal, no slaves were freed.

@bullyboy1863 WOW! that is wholly incorrect the most ardent supporters of slaves being given full rights under the constitution were the delegates from the carolinas (most notably patrick henry) whereas the most ardent opponents of said policy were the northern delegates, due to the fact that at the time of the drafting the southern states had a higher populace ie, more people=more votes=more power, in the end the compromise reached was to not give rights to the slaves so they remain in the us

Yes or no...if states had the right to vote themselves out of the Union, without consent from the rest of the nation, then portions of the seceding states, had the right to to remain in the Federal Union, and secede from their respective states.
