Yes, most definitely the great band of the period and one of the all time great jazz bands in the history of music. That is, the two or three incarnations playing music with this particular spirit. Pure imagination... It's mind blowing that this is over 40 years old. This music is more advanced, honest, intelligent, and expressive than just about anything being performed today.
I saw this lineup at Royce Hall in Los Angeles. My buddy was on the stage crew and got us in free. We were allover the stage before the concert,Joe was wondering who these dumb kids were.Dom Um Ramao was kicking around a soccer in the long hall behind the stage. Miroslav was so good,he played that same p-bass. He was also very nice and talked to us for a long time after the concert on stage. Killer concert, Yes i did now what I was hearing back then! Those "were" the days!
Im sorry love Jaco to death but.The early Weather report was rougher than the later period. The late stuff sounds like "World Disco" to me.Just saying...
I had the pleasure and privilege of seeing Weather Report perform at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, PA with this line-up back in 1971. This video really takes me back. The sounds they laid down that night absolutely blew my mind. I especially remember Miroslav Vitous on the double bass and Dom Um Romeo with his table full of percussion instruments blowing some real consciousness expanding vibes. Gary Burton with Steve Swallow on bass opened for Weather Report. Unforgettable!
@NewJerseyJoey I keep coming back to this tape and this incredible music! That concert you saw was one for the ages...did they do this medley then? I'm curious to know. As time went on they changed dramatically. The balance here with the two principals Zawinul and Shorter was amazing. Then Zawinul got into all those synth sounds, there was less of Shorter's horn, and the music got practically maudlin compared to this! I read stories about Zawinul's ego, how that ended it...they were great.
Their best line up ever! ...and the Best I ever heard them play live, probably because in it's in a TV studio. They'll are so good...love the idea of electric/ acoustic bass especially that part when Miorslav plays bow! Wayne...genius! Zawinul a monster! Dom...a magician...Alphonse cascading....throughout
what electric bass is Vitous playing?
