I'm glad to find this performance again. I remember when I first saw it all those years ago and just being completely awestruck by how powerful this is (like someone else said, I had tears in my eyes). Everyone has their own individual stamp on this song and this is his. And it's brilliant!
hard to think that frank spencer became the original phantom of the opera...on stage at least.. i grew up with michael crawford and he will always be amazing
It's a great cover..no offense though,Ted Neely owns this song..it's willed by the Gods of music that a Ted Neely shall be born to sing the song one day..(it did happened in the 70's:))
I was literally blown away when I first heard the song/saw Michael perform it - it's a jaw-dropping performance. MC doesn't sing this song, he lives it - I've never heard anyone bring as much emotion to his songs as Michael does (I often cry when I hear him sing). In this song, regardless of which version I'm hearing, you can feel his pain/anger/frustration - it's just remarkable.
The one, the only Phantom of the Opera, with the voice that is amazing and one of a kind. Webber was a fool not to cast him in the movie that would have lived forever!! Now it is just gathering dust on a shelf.
It might be a 'rock opera' but this song, this point in the show and the story...it's pure passion, and that is exactly what MC does, and does it flawlessly. Bravo.
@cherry1311 I always thought that he did that stuff because he was so in to it and stuff. A lot of actors use hand motions; some without even knowing.
He has a magnificent gift in that beautiful voice of his, but also in his ability to sing with such convincing emotion. I get caught up in the performance every time I hear this, and sit through it sniveling as if he really were getting ready to sacrifice himself. *SIGH* THAT'S why he's a star.
Wow, who would have thought that bumbling idiot Frank Spencer could have such a magnificent voice tucked away. What a fabulous revelation Michael's voice is.
I think Michael Crawford sings this beautifully. He has a wonderful voice and this song suits him. If you've seen Jesus Christ Superstar then you'd know its quite a mellow scene anyway.

He is really a great singer but not right for this role....it is supposed to be a "ROCK' opera. I appreciate all great vocalists, but part of that is being in the appropriate role in which the style the vocalist sings. He just doesn't fit in this forum. Performances from Ian Gillan, Ted Neely, John Farnham are more suitable for JCS. But I don't want to leave out Steve Balsamo's performance from the 2004 Holland show...My GOD, it's truly Flawless.
@sissy612 I'm not sure if you are aware but MC never had "the role", he was simply singing this song on the Royal Variety Show of 1992 I believe and probably recorded it. I could never imagine MC playing Jesus but I think he sings "Gethsemane" amazingly... even prefer this version to Balsamo who I saw a few times live.
@gshelmerdine MC's version is my favorite rendition of this. Seeing and hearing him perform this live is stunning. He is absolutely riveting and he gets a standing ovation whenever he does this in concert. And the strange thing is, I never liked this number until I heard and saw Michael sing it!
@gshelmerdine Its recorded on a CD i own i got from borders. It's Michael Crawford performs Andrew Lloyd Webber and I listen to it all the time. I love him!

MC has a good voice but I see no point in him or anyone else singing this song if they aren't gonna sing the high notes.

Michael sings with his whole body and soul. This is his interpretation of the song Gethesemane. It isn't arrogance, its passion. He gives it his all.
imahaingttia 5 months ago 5
He has one of the best voice to sing this song. But, the interpretation I think a little arrogant.

@cherry1311 What do you mean by arrogant? I think it sounds like he put his heart in soul in it..
