These guys stay in the same place even when the drummer is playing some hip shit - they don't change their "one" even when he's displacing his beat by sixteenths, so I think they would not be allowed to play New York pickup gigs, because it's required that rhythm section players get lost then vibe the drummer lol.

My point is, these guys are more adventurous and more "chill" than most jazz musicians I know. I don't know what it is about playing in church, but I think it develops stronger musicians.
