I this this is the Biwa, not the Shamisen. I may be wrong, but it sound more lie a Biwa when they srag the pick(Or whatever that part is called) up the String.

@ScherzoDiAmico I think you're right! -- the biwa tends to have a "scratchier" sound than the shamisen, and is often played with several fingers, not just a single pick. The playing here is more like biwa playing than shamisen.

Also, according to wikipedia, the biwa was "the chosen instrument of the goddess of music in Shinto" so that's another reason why it might have been preferred in Okami to a shamisen. Don't get me wrong, I love shamisen too! but biwa has a unique sound quality also.

@bleuroo Oops ! Quick correction: the biwa is actually played with a pick like shamisen, not with fingers -- I think I confused it with the pipa, which is a Chinese-type biwa that is played with the fingers or with a pick (it's easy to confuse them all!).

But regardless, the instrument in this song is a biwa, not a shamisen. Yotube has some other biwa videos if you'd like to hear more of this great sound. :)

Okay now when I listen to this I always picture two samurai's meeting in a desolate bamboo field, Full moon shining, and one just stands there staring at the other playing the Yamisen (I think that what the instrument used in this is called) playing this exact song, and then the POV just shows the bamboo forest till it shows a zoom out of them. OMG I write too much anime storylines of futile Japan X.X

Had to go thru so many other Okami soundtracks (had no idea what it'd be called), looking for THIS particular one .. I loved it from the very first time it appeared in game (and that was .. in Tsutamaki Ruins, upon entering corridor leading to Spider Queen, I think?)

Probably the most " Nippon-authentic " soundtrack piece in Okami .. I love it! I love shamisen so no wonder it instantly became one of my favourites ^^
