  • Uh.. first of all, spiny lobster don't often prey on urchins, and prefer clams and rotting animals. Second of all, the major predators of urchins on the pacific coast are california sheephead, and sea-otters. And third-- There are no invertebrates on earth that are anywhere as intelligent as cats. The most intelligent invertebrates-- Octopods, STILL arent as intelligent.

  • Don't lose focus... this is the only video i have seen around discussing this problem, and it's a very true problem...

Some areas in NSW Australia are undersea deserts now because of this, not only do we need lobsters to eat urchins, we need BIG lobsters, that are the only ones actually capable of flipping them over with their front legs... The same problem now gets to Tasmania due to global warming (allowing urchins to go to colder places), to the point that fishermen actually donate lobsters.

  • "...they are as intelligent as cats..."

Nonesense, there brains are closer to those of insects.

  • Mmmmh, I love lobster, so tasty!

  • are these urchins not harvestable where i live divers farm the urchins taking only the large ones that move up in the shallow water which has heped preserve the kelp while creating jobs for local fishermen.

  • Okay...plain in simple...this is opening "Pandora's Box:, if you will. If we stopped eating certain animals because of certain such reasons, we would no longer have food. Im sorry, but God blessed this Earth and gave us the gift of animals to eat and survive, and I will contiue to be grateful for his gifts.

  • Oh yeah, God did(yawn). Actually I thought in God's big book he says dont eat shellfish, so there you go.

  • If you could please quote, I am coming from a a family of theology so try your best. Other wise do not Yawn about God my friend, soon enough you will find out why.

  • Leviticus 11:9-12 — Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams, you may eat any that have fins and scales. But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales — whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water — you are to detest. And since you are to detest them, you must not eat their meat.

    Moron

  • Hmmmm, interesting...do you take everything literel you fucking prick. How about when the Lord our God siad drink this wine and it will turn into my blood and eat this bread and it shall be my body? Do you believe that it turns into our God's blood and body? The Bible is a translation my friend a translation! Tell me, are you a believer or someone who has just done some heavy reading and thinks you know everything?

  • No you fucking idiot I dont believe in God, you come from "a family of theology" and don't even read your "holy book". The world is not given to us by God; Dont fucking preach if you cant take it ,moron.

  • and learn to spell!

  • One person(s) cannot be blamed. Instead, blame yourself and CIVILIZATION. The only way the can be resolved is world wide cooperation. Yea, good luck.

  • You can choose the level of impact on the world; and we inevitably are judged by our choices.

  • Sorry lobster is one of my favorite foods, I'm not gonna stop eating them. Plankton form the base of the marine food chain anyway, so the kelp isn't that important.

  • Kelp is vitally important for the health of fish. Kelp "forests" shelter and nourish fish and other sea life.

The Urchins eat the base of the Kelp, cutting it from its mooring and, ultimately, killing it. Killing the Ocean is death for us, too.

  • keep eating lobster urchins are far from the top of the food chain for lobsters they do eat them but only if nothing else is available.

  • I used to be a lobster fanatic until I became aware of this situation. I will no longer eat lobster. Bring back the sea otter.

  • I wasn't aware of the sea urchin problem. Wow. I haven't had lobster in years anyway, way too expensive. Thanks for posting this.

  • Without kelp, the Ocean dies. Sea urchins eat the root oundation of the kelp, killing the rest of the kelp "tree"; but Lobsters eat urchins, and could help bring the kelp back.
