@girzwald3 Exxon Mobile is also the 4th largest public company and raised profits around 53% in 2011. The Conservative Government in the UK recently imposed a $3.25b tax on the oil industry. Big Oil whined about it but were told to STFU and pay. The revenue has been used to reduce gas prices at the pump. Gas station owners who do not pass on the saving (about 40 cents per gallon) will be prosecuted for gouging the public. Can you imagine a Conservative government doing this in in the USA? Just goes to show how insanely extreme right the GOP has become.

Americans should be outraged over the subsidies we are giving to the corporate wealthy. They want free market when its paid for by the taxpayers. which is far from free.
Do you want an American Company drilling the oil and paying taxes to America for it, or would you prefer a Saudi or European country doing it and sending it back to their homeland? The problem with the left's class warfare economic policy is it fundamentally weakens the economy by chasing away the smart, successful, and hard working, in order to redistribute their wealth to those who did not earn it
Solid logic man, really, I'm sure you're highly skilled and working in a country that pays you much better than the US does...like India, or maybe China.
@tehant1liberal Behold the ultimate hypocrisy of the right-wing given form: "Limited governement, free market" they cry "But not if the free market helps anyone other than the USA!" they add.
"Corporate robots, man. They're just here to suck our money out and give it to the richest people in the country. It's grotesque. GET A LOAD OF NETFLIX!"
Where is the talk about cutting the agriculture and oil subsidies by the republicans? If ever there was government waste this is it. The is so stupid i had to watch it twice just to make sure I heard it right.
The argument to turn this country into a peoples socialist country becomes greater with each passing day.
The American Dream? This is his version of that great idea? How fucking sick can one human being be?
End lobbying, publicly finance campaigns, abolish the fed elections committee, watch our government become an honest one and all the other ills of our nation such as war, homelessness and low wages, disappear. Full on capitalism is a failure, it has turned into a Corporatocracy.
To the Four people who disliked this video. How can you possibly support Billions of dollars in Subsidies and Earmarks that are funded with tax payers dollars?
"Oil Company's will be pushed out of population centers, they we be denied sanctuary, they will loose their hugh profits, and Republican scare tactics are being rejected by local citizens." All the while, those very citizens are taking back their towns and their cities, building schools and roads, harvesting alternative fuel sources and in general contributing to a growing sense of safety in America."
I don't understand his point. The Congressman is saying that the American Dream will be destroyed if government subsidies are stopped for oil companies? The "little boy" needs 4 billion in government assistance to achieve the American Dream? When you ask him about food stamps for that little boy then he's on his own because we're broke.
It's too late for this. The GOP has already won the battle on corporate subsidies and tax cuts. Obama is too busy trying to be a republican to care about it anyway.
Goes to show how our govt. both local and Federal are bought and paid for. You would think that they would be jumping for the royalties but for a few thousand dollars and a job after office, they are willing to sell the whole country out. Every country besides the US does this. As a country and a society we are going down hard and when it happens there will be alot of people who will be crushed.
Usually I see someone saying "but if we take away their tax breaks we'll pay more at the pump!" - um yeah.. so the people using the gas should pay for it and the ones that aren't don't? simple enough.
I don't get how *any* company board can explain to their investors how they justified giving one man almost a half a billion dollars to retire! for that much money I could have paid a Univ to train dozens of really smart people to run my biz efficiently AND paid them $200k for a few years.
@dreamcoyote Maybe I'm missing something here. If oil company A charges more at the pump, then they have increased their taxable profits, which means they will be paying even more in taxes.
people usually argue for the status quo by saying that if we raise taxes (effectively) on big oil that gas at the pump will be more expensive for them. I'm saying fine - that's true.. people who don't use gas or choose to use less won't be paying for the others via taxes across the board. the ones who will be buried as single occupants of commuting SUV barges will pay more. yeah, that includes delivery trucks etc but then our income taxes could be less so it should equal out.
wow.. I'd never even heard that angle! seems plain as day now that you've given a few sentences tying it all together! I can google around but if you have good source for that I'd love to learn more.. just if you know one off the top of your head.
I knew they basically ended up as economic vassals of ours but not such a clear view of it.. and we think of cheap food coming from other countries nowadays (killing our farms), but 50-75 years ago.. different story.
I get what you're saying and agree.. if it's a tax break, call it one. if it's a subsidy, call it one. I don't know the specifics and for all I know it's a mix of both for various parts of the process (drilling, extraction, etc). there's no gain by using the wrong term.. and I get that you aren't arguing *for* these gifts to big oil.
but break/subsidy, it doesn't come to us. it's a world market so it can easily go overseas, even if that makes little sense.
@EckoStream then people stop investing in them because they aren't as profitable, then far less oil is produced, and the whole economy collapses. Try again.
@Houshalter What a bogus line of reasoning. There is more than enough cash available in profits for all the investment in drilling by a large margin. Compare and contrast a large oil company to say Toyota that has to constantly innovate and perform significant R&D and does not make a profit most years.
Oil business ain't so much a business than access to a money tap. Investment won't leave oil for hell or high water.
@CmdrTobs oil companies are owned by the government and vice versa. It's such a mess it isn't even worth talking about where the profits should go, the whole thing should be reset. That being said, on a free market, profits attract investment. If an industry was making such profits, it would just be swarmed with new competetion undercutting them until it reached equilibrium.
@Houshalter Yes, that's the trick. The free market only works when barriers to entry are low and the players largely spend profits reinvesting (thus are small).
In reality for something like Oil the political access and capital costs mean almost nobody can start one.
If one did the bigger company would buy them out thus to square one. In fact they will buy out even something like a electric tram business. Destroying alternatives has less opportunity cost than actual investment for big corps.
@Ablativearmour the market can pool resources to meet those barriers, if there is profit in doing so. Even getting bought out by the cartel/monopoly counts as profit and will continue to attract new investment until eventually the cartel can't afford to keep buying them out. Besides, cartel arangements only work when they are enforcable by an external agency, and monopolies just bid up the price of a resource until they get so deep into debt they can never recover their losses.
@Houshalter "the market can pool resources to meet those barriers, if there is profit in doing so." The reality is it doesn't.
" Even getting bought out by the cartel/monopoly counts as profit ..." - Again a miss match with reality. A large company or cartel can afford to buy out indefinitely. Even if they could only do for 20, 30 years that is a whole generation that will have to make do with an inferior product.
@CmdrTobs of course it could not afford to buy out indefinitely, it would have to have the entire money supply to do so. People can invest to make a new company and demand a bunch of money from the cartel or threaten to break it by competing. Even if the cartel gives, all it does is signal more people to do the same. They will have to pay off every rational actor in the economy to win, hope those contracts are enforcable, and somehow use their monopoly status to pay off their losses.
@Houshalter Of course they can.... there is no reason why sales of there inferior idea wouldn't remain strong to enable this. In any case the 50yrs+ it would take giant or cartel to collapse is hardly acceptable. I've heard marketeers condemn whole "socialist" regimes failures within than time frame.
In any case, with the buying out the new company the cartel ALWAYS acquires the patents which they will happily sit on and there likely aren't infinite ways of doing better in a given industry.
@CmdrTobs it could be collapsed within days if enough people on the market see the profit potential. At the very least within the time it takes to form new competetion. There's just no way they could get enough money to pay everyone off, and if they did, they could never ever make it back even with monopoly prices.
@Houshalter Like I said there usually are a limited number of alternative superior ideas. All the oligarchs have to do is buy out 1 maybe 2 companies (and thus the I.P) a generation. That's EASY.
In the case of whole industries (where there is no IP to buy) they simply can buy out an idea until it's no longer a feasible threat. An example of this is Detroit & Oil liquidating electric trams. Trams are now inferior largely if not solely on the grounds that suburbia was built without them.
@CmdrTobs Are you talking about IP rights? Yes, patents and the like are state granted temporary-monopolies and that is why I am against them for the most part.
As for buying out alternative forms of transportation, the government usually sets up the infrastructure for that in the first place. You are getting into natural monopolies and that is a whole 'nother topic.
@Houshalter "Are you talking about IP rights? Yes" Yes, pattens for the superior idea IS the raison d'etre for buyouts. They exist in this FM system that we are using that I'm critiquing.
Not really. The government is beholden to market forces too. If many eople buy cars because the trains have been destroyed then the *blame* lies at the destroyer of the trains. It's not a natural monopoly at all if oligarchs steered a society to depend on it's product through means other than product merit.
'He' can't be that smart OR that good if they NEED $4 Billion in subsidies. Someone is LYING. Pure & simple. LYING!!! And STEALING!!! Methinks I smell a conspiracy here. Isn't THAT a crime, Conspiracy to Commit & Cover Up Theft? And if these companies turn profits & get subsidies, why don't they pay taxes? Methinks it's also time for some civil disobedience. Maybe even some uncivil disobedience. Just to make the point we're damn tired of the nonsense.
@daveusaz1218 A very valid point. Nobody is subsidizing transnational corporations like U.S. taxpayers. Making matters worse, much worse, is the trillions in U.S. tax dollars spent to police the globe. . . . Everyone stop what you're doing, right now, and contact your so-called representatives in government (email, phone, show up at their office with a few hundred like minded friends..) and tell them they either start advocating for you, per their job description, or find another occupation.
If you add in the top 10 energy companies worldwide instead of the top 5, you have even more profits, and that's with a range of $23/barrel in 2001 to almost $100 again now. It's conceivable that it'll reach between $200-300 barrel. That's $2 trillion in profits these companies stand to gain by the status quo! Global warming hoax my ass! Guess who's going to be selling us the products to cope with life on a fuk'd planet later? These same bastards from some safe point on the planet. Disgusting.
You see, here in Louisiana we see it as 'smarts' to screw everyone else, e.g. our former governor now convicted prisoner Edwin Edwards. A recent commercial by our present govermor, Bobby Jindal, states that his goal is creating jobs. How is he going to do that? He goes on to say, "By making government do more with less." ????? Great logic, don't you think???
The thing that gets me is the these kinds of Republicans admit that rich people should get rich by fucking over anybody and everybody. And they are so morally corrupt that they do not see anything wrong with that. Meanwhile America is truly suffering for it. And it seems that 50% of Americans don't give a fuck at all because they have delusions of gander... In other world most poor to Middle income Republicans dream of fucking over the "little guy" so they can become rich. Republicans support it
i say it's time to revolt againts these bastarards and haul there ass in the streets and execute them. there is no problem with the oil supply but the price keeps going up what the fuck man. the anylist are reponsible for this like back in 08 when prices went thru the roof it's time to lynch these bastards
My ass that's an American dream. That's greed right in front of you. Also the way he stunners when he talks shows he has no answer. All you hear is "blah blah my money blah."
Royalties ? Ask any African country about their "royalties". They ain't getting a fucking nickel ! Fucking oil companies are just a global criminal organization that has enough power to stay in power... and we give it to them !
Royalties ? Ask any African country about their "royalties". They ain't getting a fucking nickel ! Fucking oil companies are just a global criminal organization that has enough power to stay in power.
I have to be honest here: I have no idea what Landry's argument even is. I heard him say it, but I didn't understand any of it. Was he even in the same discussion we were watching?
We've been hearing these stats for years, & as the numbers get more obscene, right on mark, the average IQ of working people drops 10 or more points. What's it going to take to recognize that the upper echelon are sociopathicly greedy & literally sucking you dry? For the love of God! The American dream? The poor little rich boy makes good? Bullshit. It's the rich kid getting richer & richer & richer & who gives a rat's ass about the billions of other folks who made that silver spoon possible.
The Republicans believe: Small government for the big guy, big government for the small guy; welfare for the big guy, no-welfare for the small guy. And presumably Health Care for the big guy, no Health Care for the little guy.
Corporate welfare will completely end under the SUPREME and ALMIGHTY AWESOME and POWERFUL rule of President Sarah Palin! Palin will completely eliminate all the corporate corruption in our govt and purify it! Palin is truly the champion for the people and the govt will truly serve them!
WE NEED President Sarah Palin to run this country! She will protect our taxpayer money and ensure that none of it goes to the corrupt oil companies! Palin is truly the CHAMPION of the people and she will root out all the evil corruption in our government and restore the republic! Palin will keep the govt completely out of the oil industry!
Jeff Landry is Sarah Palin's DICKLESS and BALLESS BITCH and PUSSY! Palin is a VASTLY SUPERIOR politician and statesman than this ass-goon could ever be. She is MORE MAN than he is for Jeff wears the skirt while his wife wears the pants!
So medicaid is handouts and mooching, but a 4 billion dollar subsidie for an already highly profitable business is the American dream. How the fuck does that make sense?
@executehelenkeller Cuz somewhere along the line the 'American Dream' went from .. rags to riches to... 'get rich(er), morals be damned'.. which is about the lest Christian message you could ever come up with. Eye of the needle, anyone?
(I mention the God stuff only because the guy with the 'R' beside his name in the clip)
Water infrastructure is not a *handout* of H2O: it is a fundamental human need and civilized societies should and will provide it.
Medicaid is not a *handout*: it is a fundamental human need and civilized societies should and will provide it.
There idea of the *American dream* as they call it, is ultimately a kind of socially darwinistic society with the occasional rags to riches story to jack off to. Statistically its rags to rags, and riches to riches.
@executehelenkeller its not meant to make sense .. its meant to make money ... its allways about the money .. nothing else ... im so glad i live in europe ... your so called american dream became a nightmare with all your fast business and hire and fire mentality !!!
actually I think they specifically say things like "take money from the job creators" or "adjusting taxes for the job creators" which sounds like creating jobs but it doesn't specify that. you could also say "giving money to the job creators to create jobs in India". they don't want to answer whether this is the best way to create jobs. that would be funneling money to/leaving money with the middle class. that creates more consumers which support more jobs AND the rich.
@executehelenkeller Because Medicare is for people who are Very Low Income ( under 20k a year ) or on Social Security Not Billionaires you do Know the Difference Right....?
There is only one way to beat the oil companies.... Electric cars and clean energy. The price of oil will plummet so that the products that oil is used in other than gas and electricity will become cheaper.
Anything short of the oil company's giving all of the money back that the government has given them over 10 years and a cap on the gas prices is way to soft.
If I were to run for President and promise to represent the middle and poor America, and only work to help them grow and fight back companies, because we know that it's not CEO's that make up companies, its the middle class Americans, would you vote for me?
@Frankenfukstein Yea, but he's not as determined as me, not to mention I come from a middle class family that's on the OUTSIDE of politics. I've been affected by their utter incompetence just like many others. I don't take bullshit for an answer, and if they want to mess with me with their fuck the middle class perception, I'll fucking bury them into the ground. Nothing but constructive criticism will change my mind.
Our system is corrupt. How much longer are we going to take this? Tax cuts and subsidies for the rich, while the middle class are make the sacrifices.
In all fairness, executive pay and oil company subsidies are two separate issues. If the shareholders of an oil company want to allow the overpayment of its execs and hurt their profits, so be it. Although, if I was them, I'd be a little pissed if I found out the pay was the result of the boardroom buddy system and not fair market value. Subsidies, on the other hand, need to be abolished and there needs to be investigations of the individuals responsible for the palm-greasing.
Very true, but if your government wouldn't give financial support to oil company X, their shareholders would have to put more money in investing in the company than paying the director, no?
@Ghost0630 The problem is that those profits ride on the wake of the oil subsidies. This is the comparison being made. The subsidies enable the reaping of profits.
@Ghost0630 They're not separate issues really. It's our money going to their pockets. The shareholders don't care as long as thier stocks do well --and naturally they do with all the subsidies.
The thing people don't get is this isn't individual effort "creating" profit on an island --this is people using our system of commerce to make a profit. Our system is rewarding them too much.
What an incredible stretch. We charge less for our oil than I believe any other country in the world. The American people are being robbed. They are giving it TO us alright, right up the ass.
Farm subsidies, such as corn subsidies... never mind. Are you actually so stupid as to defend this? To claim it's good for America? If you are, I'm sorry for you. If you're a liar, then just fuck off.
How come you don't touch on the billions and billions given to green energies and various other technologies that haven't actually seen any advancements since the subsidies started coming in? Oh that's right that would make you a balanced news source.
@rockinandout Name one corporation that does only green energy that made 100 billion dollars in profit in the last ten years. Just one. Gimme a link to their earnings statement.
I a few years ago, ran for a small town office. I did not ask people for money for something I decided to do, I did not have fundraisers. no corporate donors

no union donors
just people, and you have to register the donation so they can keep limits per politician so Bill Gates doesn't take over Oregon or something.
start there.. lobbyists can still visit but not more giving checks. if a union wants to support a candidate, it can suggest its members do so.
WE need to vote that in via referendum. start getting signatures.

Every country besides the US does this. As a country and a society we are going down hard and when it happens there will be alot of people who will be crushed.
BuckFutterd 10 months ago
Usually I see someone saying "but if we take away their tax breaks we'll pay more at the pump!" - um yeah.. so the people using the gas should pay for it and the ones that aren't don't? simple enough.
I don't get how *any* company board can explain to their investors how they justified giving one man almost a half a billion dollars to retire! for that much money I could have paid a Univ to train dozens of really smart people to run my biz efficiently AND paid them $200k for a few years.
dreamcoyote 10 months ago
@dreamcoyote Maybe I'm missing something here. If oil company A charges more at the pump, then they have increased their taxable profits, which means they will be paying even more in taxes.
kitsunegames 10 months ago
@kitsunegames
people usually argue for the status quo by saying that if we raise taxes (effectively) on big oil that gas at the pump will be more expensive for them. I'm saying fine - that's true.. people who don't use gas or choose to use less won't be paying for the others via taxes across the board. the ones who will be buried as single occupants of commuting SUV barges will pay more. yeah, that includes delivery trucks etc but then our income taxes could be less so it should equal out.

dreamcoyote 10 months ago
Dolores!!!
jbw470 10 months ago
@RealityGrapple
I get what you're saying and agree.. if it's a tax break, call it one. if it's a subsidy, call it one. I don't know the specifics and for all I know it's a mix of both for various parts of the process (drilling, extraction, etc). there's no gain by using the wrong term.. and I get that you aren't arguing *for* these gifts to big oil.
but break/subsidy, it doesn't come to us. it's a world market so it can easily go overseas, even if that makes little sense.
dreamcoyote 10 months ago

@EckoStream then people stop investing in them because they aren't as profitable, then far less oil is produced, and the whole economy collapses. Try again.
Houshalter 10 months ago
@Houshalter What a bogus line of reasoning. There is more than enough cash available in profits for all the investment in drilling by a large margin. Compare and contrast a large oil company to say Toyota that has to constantly innovate and perform significant R&D and does not make a profit most years.
Oil business ain't so much a business than access to a money tap. Investment won't leave oil for hell or high water.
CmdrTobs 9 months ago
@CmdrTobs oil companies are owned by the government and vice versa. It's such a mess it isn't even worth talking about where the profits should go, the whole thing should be reset. That being said, on a free market, profits attract investment. If an industry was making such profits, it would just be swarmed with new competetion undercutting them until it reached equilibrium.
Houshalter 9 months ago
@Houshalter Yes, that's the trick. The free market only works when barriers to entry are low and the players largely spend profits reinvesting (thus are small).
In reality for something like Oil the political access and capital costs mean almost nobody can start one.
If one did the bigger company would buy them out thus to square one. In fact they will buy out even something like a electric tram business. Destroying alternatives has less opportunity cost than actual investment for big corps.
Ablativearmour 9 months ago
@Ablativearmour the market can pool resources to meet those barriers, if there is profit in doing so. Even getting bought out by the cartel/monopoly counts as profit and will continue to attract new investment until eventually the cartel can't afford to keep buying them out. Besides, cartel arangements only work when they are enforcable by an external agency, and monopolies just bid up the price of a resource until they get so deep into debt they can never recover their losses.
Houshalter 9 months ago
@Houshalter "the market can pool resources to meet those barriers, if there is profit in doing so." The reality is it doesn't.
" Even getting bought out by the cartel/monopoly counts as profit ..." - Again a miss match with reality. A large company or cartel can afford to buy out indefinitely. Even if they could only do for 20, 30 years that is a whole generation that will have to make do with an inferior product.
CmdrTobs 9 months ago
@CmdrTobs of course it could not afford to buy out indefinitely, it would have to have the entire money supply to do so. People can invest to make a new company and demand a bunch of money from the cartel or threaten to break it by competing. Even if the cartel gives, all it does is signal more people to do the same. They will have to pay off every rational actor in the economy to win, hope those contracts are enforcable, and somehow use their monopoly status to pay off their losses.
Houshalter 9 months ago
@Houshalter Of course they can.... there is no reason why sales of there inferior idea wouldn't remain strong to enable this. In any case the 50yrs+ it would take giant or cartel to collapse is hardly acceptable. I've heard marketeers condemn whole "socialist" regimes failures within than time frame.
In any case, with the buying out the new company the cartel ALWAYS acquires the patents which they will happily sit on and there likely aren't infinite ways of doing better in a given industry.
CmdrTobs 9 months ago
@CmdrTobs it could be collapsed within days if enough people on the market see the profit potential. At the very least within the time it takes to form new competetion. There's just no way they could get enough money to pay everyone off, and if they did, they could never ever make it back even with monopoly prices.
Houshalter 9 months ago
@Houshalter Like I said there usually are a limited number of alternative superior ideas. All the oligarchs have to do is buy out 1 maybe 2 companies (and thus the I.P) a generation. That's EASY.
In the case of whole industries (where there is no IP to buy) they simply can buy out an idea until it's no longer a feasible threat. An example of this is Detroit & Oil liquidating electric trams. Trams are now inferior largely if not solely on the grounds that suburbia was built without them.
CmdrTobs 9 months ago
@CmdrTobs Are you talking about IP rights? Yes, patents and the like are state granted temporary-monopolies and that is why I am against them for the most part.
As for buying out alternative forms of transportation, the government usually sets up the infrastructure for that in the first place. You are getting into natural monopolies and that is a whole 'nother topic.
Houshalter 9 months ago
@Houshalter "Are you talking about IP rights? Yes" Yes, pattens for the superior idea IS the raison d'etre for buyouts. They exist in this FM system that we are using that I'm critiquing.
Not really. The government is beholden to market forces too. If many eople buy cars because the trains have been destroyed then the *blame* lies at the destroyer of the trains. It's not a natural monopoly at all if oligarchs steered a society to depend on it's product through means other than product merit.
CmdrTobs 9 months ago
'He' can't be that smart OR that good if they NEED $4 Billion in subsidies. Someone is LYING. Pure & simple. LYING!!! And STEALING!!! Methinks I smell a conspiracy here. Isn't THAT a crime, Conspiracy to Commit & Cover Up Theft? And if these companies turn profits & get subsidies, why don't they pay taxes? Methinks it's also time for some civil disobedience. Maybe even some uncivil disobedience. Just to make the point we're damn tired of the nonsense.

Medicaid is not a *handout*: it is a fundamental human need and civilized societies should and will provide it.

tiberianfiend 10 months ago
In all fairness, executive pay and oil company subsidies are two separate issues. If the shareholders of an oil company want to allow the overpayment of its execs and hurt their profits, so be it. Although, if I was them, I'd be a little pissed if I found out the pay was the result of the boardroom buddy system and not fair market value. Subsidies, on the other hand, need to be abolished and there needs to be investigations of the individuals responsible for the palm-greasing.
Ghost0630 10 months ago 42
@Ghost0630 ---
Very true, but if your government wouldn't give financial support to oil company X, their shareholders would have to put more money in investing in the company than paying the director, no?
underbjorn 10 months ago
@Ghost0630 The problem is that those profits ride on the wake of the oil subsidies. This is the comparison being made. The subsidies enable the reaping of profits.
ninerdanish 10 months ago
@Ghost0630 They're not separate issues really. It's our money going to their pockets. The shareholders don't care as long as thier stocks do well --and naturally they do with all the subsidies.
The thing people don't get is this isn't individual effort "creating" profit on an island --this is people using our system of commerce to make a profit. Our system is rewarding them too much.
