My boyfriend was in a car with a drunk driver and they went off the road and hit a tree. He was in the backseat without his seat belt on, and I thank god everyday that he only broke his 4th vertebrea in his back. The doctors told him he'll be lucky to walk when he's 40 years old. It was a stupid decision on his behalf to get in the car, but I'm so THANKFUL and BLESSED that he's alive. There's no excuse for drunk driving.
We can't show adverts like this in the United States, due to their graphic nature.
Makes you wonder exactly what damn demographic/constituency the government is serving!
I want adverts like this shown because of their graphic nature.
There's no excuse. Yes, when I was 17-25, I drank like a fish. I also used designated drivers. I picked a sober girl to drive my car, and then drank with my other friends while we rode around. If I knew to do that at seventeen, it can't be that damn difficult.
This is an incredibly effective endorsement by MADD, was emotionally jarring and visually striking. By a large margin the most powerful commercial I've seen.
This is a compilation of advertisements made by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) of Victoria, Australia, over the last twenty years (twenty-two now, as the ad came out before Christmas 2009). The TAC has never shied away from being as graphic as possible about the dangers of unsafe driving. You should visit their YouTube account or website to see the full versions of their ads.
The messages are very clear - drive responsibly, and if you drink and drive, you're a bloody idiot.
@LordBlackadder75 I agree! Thanks for the info. Couldn't track down where my friend got it from. Guess it went viral at one point. Thought it would be good to post here. I'll check out their YT channel. Thank you.
This should be shown all over the 'civilized' world. It made me gasp in horror but things like this happen far too often. What is worse is the fact that 9 times out of 10, the innocent are the ones to suffer whilst the drunkards walk away!
It's a shame we don't see PSAs like this in the US, but I don't think there's any ban on them. Certainly not a governmental ban. It's probably just a decision the networks and cable channels make, and their rationale is probably that viewers would react so negatively that they'd switch channels.
@WildeNotesMusic Good point on networks choosing what they air. I'd also assume that airing commercials/ PSA's that are remotely anti alcohol, wouldn't line their executives pockets nearly as much as perhaps the Budweiser Clydesdale's, or even the Miller Lite girls do. Just a thought. : )
@casskane007 You may be right about the influence of the alcohol industry on TV networks. The images in this ad aren't nearly as gruesome as many of the images we see nightly on cop shows, etc. But research shows that exposing people to really gory images from real car crashes can tend to backfire, making people want to drink more (probably as escape from the horrendous images). That's a main reason anti-drunk-driving educators have pulled back from using the most shocking ones.
that was more scary then the scary movie I just watched? Now I am going to be more freaked out when I am the road, worried about those drunk drivers. I am glad I don't drink.
@HayleyL23 I'm glad I don't drink alcoholic drinks either. I'm a Christian, and I choose to be a teetotaler (for religious reasons, of course), and I prefer to drink soda, such as Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper and Coca-Cola Zero. :)
so sad... but even if alot of people werent drunk the accidents would still happen... and alot of you people that are hating on others that make their immature comments about this, alot of yous, txt... or eat... or drink regular beverages... or do ur make up or look at ur gps or many other things... I dont agree with drinking and driving in any means but all of yous that watch this and make ur comments take a good hard look at how you also drive...
@NathanPathan You make a good point. Studies have shown that, for instance, texting and talking on a mobile phone (regardless of use of handsfree or not) can be almost as dangerous as DUI. It is just as important to your attention on the road itself and other road users as it is to stay out of the drivers seat if you are intoxicated.
If people would just learn and stick to this, awful happenings like the ones pictured in the ad above might, if not cease entirely, become a rare, freak occurence.
@MadRopes I hope that when you get into a wreck, the medics do everything they can to make you suffer. I hope they laugh at your torn and bloody body. I hope the cops show you no mercy and that your cellmate rapes you every chance he can. And when the life is drained from your dumbass, people only come to your grave to piss on it.
The saddest part is is that this is still highly candy-coated. It is, unfortunately, a lot more gruesome in real life. I'm a paramedic and I've had to respond to these types of calls and the drunk driver always seems to walk away unscathed. It's infuriating sometimes.
Please think twice before you get behind the wheel. So many innocent lives can be taken for someones decision to drink and drive. Please be safe this Christmas TAKE A CAB HOME OR HAVE A DESIGNATED DRIVER. This video gripped my heart and pulled it tight. Tears were following. I pray that this video is shown to every single person on this earth!!!! PLEASE DRIVE RESPONSIBLY YOU AREN'T JUST PUTTING YOURSELF AT RISK BUT THOSE WHO ARE IN YOUR CAR AND OTHER DRIVERS AND PEDESTRIANS.
Wow! Very incredible - I hate to imagine where some of this video came from - This could be a commercial with some graphics removed, because our imaginations can fill in the blanks.....
Please don't be selfish and drive after drinking too much. There are others out on the road that don't want to be near you. Please get a ride, call a cab or stay where you're at. Be safe this holiday season as we want you around next year. No one says you can't drink-just know when to say when and be responsible. Thank you
1. This commercial has NOTHING to do with MADD. This is from Australia's Transport Accident Commission. MADD is an organization that has lost its way. It is not longer even run by a Mother. In fact, its founder is completely dismayed at its current direction.
2. Some of the "action" sequences here are just waaay over the top. I caught myself laughing and this is clearly no laughing matter,
@billsparks My Australian friend told me this is a compilation of actual footage & re-creations of other accidents that actually took place. The sequences are NOT "over the top" in any way, shape or form!
@billsparks I've just learned that about MADD not having anything to do with this. I was misinformed by my friend who shared it with me. All she said was it was Australian made and MADD endorsed it. I need to edit the title, but I'm not sure how. I'll figure it out. Thanks for the info.
I.AM.SCARD.FOR.LIFE. wasnt gunna drink and drive anyway, but this just added to my reasons. people very well know what driving under the influence can do, they see it everywhere, people give speeches. everywhere you look theres always something to remind you of the dangers of doing this act. but yet, people still do it...
Also, I just cringe reading "everything is an incremental tradeoff." The problem is that drivers - especially drivers like Rexanglorum, who spend more time justifying themselves than they do improving their skills - truly believe that saving 2 minutes on a 30 minute commute, or multi-tasking behind the wheel, or saving cab fare, is a fair tradeoff for someone else's life. Even not yielding to a pedestrian who's crossing the road legally just because the intersection isn't light-controlled.
@Rexanglorum - Driving is a dangerous activity, and most of the danger is to people OTHER than the driver. NO ONE has the right to increase that risk. If you actually watched this vid, you might have noticed the man toking up, or the roughhousing interfering with the driver. This isn't about alcohol: this is about DRIVING SAFELY. Very few people who ever killed anyone with a car actually set out to become a murderer that day. They just didn't do enough to AVOID it.
@Rexanglorum YES accidents happen without alcohol, YES lots of A to B trips happen while intoxicated and they happen without incident. But by that logic, I invite you to to go play football or hockey without any pads, sure you might not get hurt, but the odds of it happening go up. It's only your ego and sense of entitlement that make you think this way. What other choice does a group like MADD have, except to try to impose lower limits on people not mature enough to make responsible choices?
@Rexanglorum and any other negative comments to this video, this is not a debate about BAC or any other mathematical increment as it pertains to the human body. This is about CHOICE. People who drink and drive are CHOOSING to put others in harms way by getting into a moving vehicle that weighs over a ton, while having impaired judgement.
omg this made me cry so much :( i wish they would show this on tv as a commercial, who cares about the gore or disturbing images. people NEED to be disturbed and repelled by drinking and driving.
@mrsrodriguez13 They do a brilliant job portraying the pain, suffering, and basically the lifetime of agony that countless DUI victims face, and how it happens in the blink of an eye. I live in Hawaii, and recently interviewed a 19 yr. old who was convicted of Neg. Homicide for killing a mother of 2 while driving drunk, his 3rd offense. He said "he couldn't remember what happened. Recalled hitting something, and then waking up in a jail cell". Not even remembering killing someone? Unbelievable!
Wow, they packed more fantasy into five and a half minutes than did the makers of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Most "drunk drivers" are mildly or moderately intoxicated and they drive from point A to point B without incident, without any harm to them sleves, to others or to other passengers.
@Rexanglorum Are you incompetent?!?! This actually happens on a regular basis. i have lost 4 people to drunk driving! It has never been, is not, and never will be okay. It is one of the most ridiculous decisions a person could make. God forbid that someone like you should ever get into or cause a tragic car accident because of drinking and driving.
@MsBambambam90 MADD was started by a women who lost a daught to a man, who was driving with a BAC of .15, that is considered drunk by any reasonable person's standard. The problem with MADD in 2011 is that they want to essentially ban alcohol consumption by making it so that any one who drinks any alcohol and drives with a 12 hour period is a "drunk driver." They do it by demanding very low legal BAC's, their goal is .01 and .01 is a far cry from the clearly drunk and danerous BAC of .15.
@Rexanglorum yeah, problem is that many of them get overconfident and eventually get killed or kill some innocent that had the bad luck of crossing his/her path.
@odinmp5 I am not in favor of drunk driving, as defined by common sense. The problem is that MADD and other groups of that nature consider having any alcohol in your system to be the same as driving "drunk."
Nothing can be made perfectly safe (people in "dry" countries and counties die in car crashes) and while I feel bad for those who lost loved ones to drunk driving, private grief should not open the door for public insanity and the use of junk science, as is curently the case.
@Rexanglorum 1.every human reacts to alcohol in a different manner, some people loose reflexes just after one cup of wine. 2. in engineering there is a term called ,"safety factor" , so if an elevator has to carry 10 people you built it so it can carry 30. that way, you avoid all the posibilities of an accident. in the same way, by not having a single drop of alcohol in your system, you reduce the odds considerably. if you think this is junk science you need to get back to school.
@odinmp5 I suggest you study economics and specifically risk in economics. Everything is an incremental tradeoff.
In your example you cited a three to one safety ratio, why not ten to one? When it comes to cars, why limit this concept to alcohol, why not set the speed limit at 20 or 10 mph on freeways?
Finally, I am against actual drunk driving or any form of driving where you have a considerable lack of control and police who spot such drivers, should certainly get them off the road.
@Rexanglorum u no what no because most of the people dont get into an accident but why would you risk someone else's life on it they didnt do anything stupid that night so don go thinking that
@Rexanglorum More than 11,000 people a year die in drunk driving accidents in the U.S. Approxiamatly every 48 minutes someone dies from an alcohol related accident. It's not fantasy, it's the harsh reality. You're ignorant.
@NicoleRachel100 The term "alcohol related" and drunk or not the same. That figure of 11,000 is based on faulty counting. the term "alcohol related" means that one of the drivers had some alcohol in them. Furthermore, even if a sober driver is at fault and hits someone with a BAC of 0.02, that would be an "alcohol related" accident.
That hardly fits the narrative of the boozed up maniac driving through a school yard, which is what MADD would want you to think when citing that stat.
@Rexanglorum Not once in this PSA is there a "boozed up maniac driving through a school". An while I know the statistics are a bit skewed, I can tell you this PSA shows a very accurate portrayal of some experiences people go through. I don't understand why you would feel so strongly against an association trying to put an end to drunk driving and save lives.
@NicoleRachel100 The reason is because as of 2011, MADD is not focused on drunk drivers, they are anti-alcohol. They want to use the fact that most Americans (and Aussies) get around with cars. In order to engage in social engineering and make drinking any alcohol very inconvient by trying to classify "drunk" as having ANY alcohol in your system.
Prohibition would not come back via an open parliamentary or referendum vote so MADD has to use lies and scare tactics.
@Rexanglorum I have no idea what has motivated you to associate MADD with a social engineering conspiracy to get rid of alcohol in American/Aussie society, but you know what the lesson is my friend? Don't drink and drive. Pretty. Damn. Simple.
@CComb501 If that is really what you think, then you have clearly never lost anyone you care about to a drunk driver. The pain friends and family have to go through is unimaginable, I know this from experience. You are a shallow and insensitive idiot.
With you people running things nobody will get to start their car as they want ignition interlocks placed on cars for everyone! And these things do NOT work accurately. The only way to tell if a person is intoxicated is by a blood sample and the correct testing on it. There are so many factors that can show a wrong BAC on these machines. Its also against the law to assume everyone is drunk. The 4th amendment...read it.
@Marksnotebook What about all these cops who are just bringing in the money for the communities and fishing for DUIS? What about dishonest police? I have heard horror stories of beatings by police and its on you tube where people have died from beatings. The police have no right to safety checkpoints and in 11 states they do not do safety checkpoints. The reason is the 4th amendment. Read it. WE're fighting back!
Respond to this video... How about the more than 4000 illegals who are here and have caused most of the highway deaths? I think these are the people who need to be stopped at the border!
My boyfriend was in a car with a drunk driver and they went off the road and hit a tree. He was in the backseat without his seat belt on, and I thank god everyday that he only broke his 4th vertebrea in his back. The doctors told him he'll be lucky to walk when he's 40 years old.

It's not an ad, it's a video that MADD shows to DUI classes. BRUTAL. And please re-word "alcohol-fail". What you mean is "alcohol+driving=fail".
