@sybren117 No not kidding at all. Dogs rely primarily on their sense of smell to determine their environment, objects around them, and orient themselves. Their second most dominant sense is hearing (which wouldn't help in this experiment). Dogs' sense of smelling is about 100.000 times better than that of humans (some stats say 10.000.000 times, but whichever stats you believe - it's incredibly sophisticated). Their vision is not as dominant, especially for non-moving objects.
It could be that the dog knows the order of the commands, or the dog recognizes the signs by their individual smell (new or old, they still each smell slightly different). No way a dog can read - they do not store language in their brain the same way we do, going sound-by-sound or even attaching one letter to a sound. Especially in languages like English, where letter does not equal sound, this is really impossible for a dog to learn.
