I've been looking at a lot of YouTube videos of this piece and I must say I really do enjoy this one. It has the energy of the Toccata but the melodic line is so haunting. The clarity of this recording is wonderful.....nothing is lost in mud.
There are some 18 dislikes here thus far. The question is what do they dislike---the performance or the music. Well the performance is rather tame but it is professionally done. If you expected to hear this with the thunderous 32' feet and all the stops of a very large organ then you need to listen on a larger organ as found in the US. I fail to comprehend why anyone would dislike this work when it can be the kind of performance that has you dancing in the aisles like Virgil Fox did it.
o kso, i turned the volume to high, bad idea when you have surroudn sound hooked up to your computer. My eardrums enarly popped form the massivness! It was almost like a real organ in my house!
In my opinion the best performance of this work on Youtube. Thank you, one can actually breath, the tempo is beautiful. This really comes alive as a Toccata.
Impressive! My favorite interpretation of this piece! Truly inspiring! I want to learn this piece! I have the score already. =) Once more, congratulations.
Lovely room acoustics...what about those shoes though? I always thought I played better in loafers until I went to college and was convinced I had to buy more expensive shoes than those I was comfortable in?? sigh Great job!!
@omahas9000 The player is Philippe Delacour, famous French organist. The instrument is the large Stahlhuth-Jann organ of St. Martin in Dudelange (Luxembourg). Regards.
Once again I click on my bookmark and once again it is amazing! Last sunday the organist in my hometown played it in a concert ... first time live on a Klais organ. great performance!
This is an incredible video. I commend the organist for amazing skill. I love this recording. This is my first time listening to this recording, and it brought tears to me eyes, of which rarely happens with music. Thank you for bringing me a great feeling i haven't felt in a long time.
I'm learning this piece right now, its hard to find a version where toccata does'nt mean "plays-as-fast-as-you-can"... Anyway, this is the best of all the versions i've heard so far!
Delacour's interpretation is wonderful, if a dime fast. Bravo! I am no "fashonista", but I couldn't help but notice: Gray slacks, black shoes and blue socks! (Chuckle!)
Nice performance, though he should check his tempo. It's very irregular, sometimes faster, sometimes slower... quite annoying, but the rest is amazing!
This is by far, one of the best performances of this piece I have heard. You do a phenomenal job maintaining the tempo and give the organ such breadth in this piece. The stops sound beautiful and I believe this is how Boellmann himself envisioned his masterpiece being played. Wonderful job!
If I can give you a hint to your friends, use the pedal first the left heel and then the right angle then the left angle. So you get the melody in the correct Tackt. There are 16th puncturing. Many play it too slow .. Yours sincerely
This was by far the best performance of this piece that I have heard so far. Amazing. It gave me goosebumps! The registration in the final section was breathtaking.
@fsbehne3 I agree wholeheartedly. Philippe Delacour may be under-rated on YouTube because he just sits there and plays without any facial contortions and extravagant gestures. I too have watched it many times.
Comparing to the videoanswer (Dr. Carol), this is really MONUMENTAL and serious, not a chaotic run to catch the morning bus at all costs. I also appreciate as the sound is being build up during the recording
@OrganistJohn I quite agree. with other interpretations it's either too fast, too slow, too loud. The registration is just about letter perfect, the first part is somewhat subdued, to make the second part all the more dramatic.. Well done, Philippe!
I love Delacour. There's such elegance in every piece he plays. I never get the feeling he's showing off; just letting himself be a vessel for the music. Glorious!

This guy has a lot of passion in his playing but he seriously needs to practice with a metronome. The tempo is all over the place, it's impossible to even find the beat beacuse its constantly changing.
I have read trough the comments and I only want to answer the question where and what organ it is: it is the Stahlhuth organ in st Martin's church in Dudelange, Luxembourg.
When I have listened to this played in the pedal with the 32' reeds, of course it sounds fantastic! I did here a couple of organists play it on monster manual instruments and coupled both 32' and 64' reeds! It just sounds unnerving and scary snarling down there at 8 Hz with the 64"s but I really love it!!
You're right, i've heard a friend of mine play it only with the 16" reeds and it sounds nowhere near as good.... 32" is great. Never heard the 64", but I can imagine it being very overwhelming and surreal!
Where on earth did you hear a 64' reed? Sydney Town Hall's got the only 64' reed in the world! It would be amazing to hear in person, but flying halfway around the world it a bit restrictive at this time. Even a digital 64' reed would be magnificent. Over the top...but magnificent just to hear.
It's very difficult to find a good performance of Suite Gothique, and I have to say this, like most others, has its flaws-it's too slow at the beginning. Otherwise, it comes across perfect, and he should be congratulated for a commendable job.
Whilst the piece does intensify, I think that was rhythmic instability rather than accelerando. But this is easily the best performance I've seen on youtube. I've yet to hear Latry playing it though!
