Being on the field during retreat and hearing star come in 3rd place was sweet. I didn't like their 92 show at all. Even with their great visual staff they still got beat by Cavies and Devils in visual. HAHA Suck it star!
hey thogy - why would anyone have expected STAR members to be gracious winners? would you be gracious after being booed every night? your comment: "i was not sad to see them go" - what a aweful comment to make!
we were young kids just like them members of the other groups. you should be ashamed.
I sense that Rondo was a bit uncomfortable in the both with the legendary Gowdy. On one hand, you could tell he had enormous respect for the legend, but at the same time he seemed unsettled that he had to cover up Curt's gaffes al the time. Regarless of Gowdy's DCI knowledge, his 5 years on the broadcast lent huge credibility to the activity. Just hearing his voice on the telecast made it feel to be a significant and important event.
no they shouldnt... they sucked in 92...lame show and presentation... there director shooting a bird towards the press box was nothing less than trashy. Star should have beat cadets... not really sure about cavies... cavies really didnt take it hands down... their show lacked complexitiy... however, i enjoyed it.
i watched PRs show on google video i thought it was amazing especially the last 2 mins. from the crowds reaction it shows that they loved the regiments show and were shocked they got such a low score. and yes star should have beaten the cadets.
Biggest joke in the history of drum corps. That show single handedly changed drum corps as we know it. Star was obviously pissed enough to never do DCI again.
@cccustommusic Star were poor losers and ungracious winners. And to say their show changed drum corp shows totally disrespects all the shows in the past that really did, like Cavies '66. Vanguard -73, Garfield '83, I was not sad to see them go.
Poor losers & ungracious winners, eh? Sounds like someone is bitter. Did someone close to you get cut? ;) Like them or not - Star is legendary. You don't have to agree - it's a fact. Thats why people still talk about them.
@impreza5150 I marched pre-DCI into the early years of DCI, and over the decades have seen corps come and go, Stars final years no doubt made a mark in DCI's history, albeit a small one. Check out DCI's 25 -yr tribute video titled "Brass Roots", they barely get a mention. Same with Spirit of Atlanta, would you say they are legendary? Fans of both corps of course would, a fan of drum corps for almost 40 years might not. But hey, gotta thank Star for Blast, and I hear they have an alumni corp.
star rose fast in DCI, but they used ALL DCI's finest to do it...they took garfield Cadets staff to do it in 1986...AThom Hanum left, and George Zingali did their drill...
...Star tried too much, too soon...they are also VERY RICH...and tried to muscle their way through with MONEY...no did they have great shows...YES...
...the hornline runs in 1991, were a little sloppy, but they still kept it....they were marching very, very fast....and looked like they were about to fall over, watch Cadets
Poor Curt Gowdy. It does seem like he had a little bit to drink before they were on air. I don't even know if he wanted to be there. 1992 was a great Drum Corps year and it ended in spectacular fashion.
you wouldn't think that if you saw the shows that scored above them. don't get me wrong, I liked it, but they finished in the place they deserved. watch the crossmen show from that year. it will blow you away.
@lolz989 They had a bad night that night. They peaked about a week earlier. I know because I marched cadets and they beat us in Minnesota just a couple of shows before finals week. On finals night they had a bad saber drop in front of most of the corps and it seemed like it threw off the entire show.
To be fair, it was (and still is) awfully hard to get a nationally-known sportscaster to be a part of an event like this. Gowdy had is flubs, but credit to him for doing it. I forget if it was '91 or '92, but I walked past their broadcast spot, and taped to one of the monitors was a note for him that read, "DON'T CALL THEM BANDS".
I lost my voice cheering in that crowd that night. Was also the largest crowd I've ever performed in front of (I was in Southwind and we did exhibition that night as the Div. II champions). Phantom played in the parking lot after retreat and it was pretty amazing - although their drum major almost missed his ride back with us.
For Cadets, because Cadets won in 1993. This was back when each corps played themselves off the retreat field at Finals, one at a time, in reverse order of finish.
1992 was my first year in drum corps and this video makes me realize that many of my first impressions of corps have stuck. Great stuff -- I never thought watching retreat would be so entertaining.
holy cow! well, I have to admit that the Crossmen had a kick ass year. Phantom just had an off year. It's hard to place well with all the other corps bringing it on as well.
was he serious...they are lucky they even made top 12..that show sucked. it was so old school with that 1976 marty hurley drumline...jeesh...get with it.
fans back then, damn. LMAO
