i lived there , i am an okie. i lived it. with 6 brothers we strived , an american way. i am now 75. Arvin was the camp/lamont and weedpatch camps. experienced made real Americans of 6 boys.
@workingclassbum These movies are an experience of a lifetime. I'm 50 and I've been watching them my whole life. Some of my first memories are going to a drive in movie theater, my dad was a projectionist there, I was a projectionist there years later.
i just finished reading "grapes of wrath". Glad i waited till i was 34 to read this book. the ending didnt' disappoint me, it startled me. what a change in rosasharn's demeanor and affect when i thought she would completely crumble under the circumstances. great book!!!
@Noinipoim That's how I felt when it ended. Supposedly it's one of the most controversial endings in all literature. I still think the novel's brilliant, and actually don't have a problem with the ending. Obviously if he took so much time to write such an epic, he meant for it to end like that, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it (no pun intended haha). It's still one of my favorite books! :) (I haven't seen the movie either, but I plan to watch it.)
To me, Tom Joad is the quintessential American role that personified what is best about American culture. Hope we can have a few more cinematic heroes like him!
@1LightningBolt It is a great depiction of the great depression and the people who lived in the period of history. I don't see what you wouldn't like about it.
I'm reading the book as a school assignment, and as I was reading the book, I always pictured Casey to be an african american. I don't know why. I had no trouble picturing all the other charaters as white people. I knew he was supposed to be white, but I never could picture him that way. It also seems to me that the actress playing Rosasharn looks a bit like Lindsey Lohan at 1:54. Tell me if anyone else had the same picture for Casey as I did or if you think Rosasharn looks like Lindsey Lohan.
my teacher ordered me to read this book and analyze about characters, plot ,setting and theme. But how i can analyze? Ha ha ..i just read it only a half of chapter 4.
@kdixon7783c - yes.... somehow I just watched this film for the first time and it shocks me how much the world has not changed and everyone and everything is treated as an 'idle asset' to be used by business to make money. Nothing has changed in our great 'western culture', we still need slaves to pick our peaches.

Never imagined Rose of Sharon to be that pretty, she always struck me as slightly harsh and self-centred xD

what is the name of the music piece played while they are annoucing cast, Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell etc?

John Steinbeck liked the movie almost better than his own book. He was a screenwriter, too, so he understood the difference between art forms.

I say the film lived up to its name and the apparent hype, and then some.
