@TZ3z . There is a bit of meat over the rib cage, but on smaller fish, this typically is not much. However, you can certainly use that portion as a base for a soup stock - so nothing need to go to waste. (keep in mind that if there are any chemicals in the fish, they will be stored in the belly area & the fat) Thanks for taking time to write to us and for tuning in - we hope you have a great year on the water in 2012!
@sublime763 When filleting, you do not have to gut the fish, and you can still remove the belly meat. In this case, the fish was smaller wit not much meat in that area and it should also be noted that if there are any contaminants in the fish, they will gather in the belly and fat areas.
So you can fillet fish without gutting them, & if you want the belly meat, just go sown over the ribs, instead of around them.
Thanks for tuning in and writing in - until next time, good fishing.
@crazydriver1978 Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for writing in. You will definitely notice a difference in taste once you remove the dark meat, so we are glad you are going to do so. As for Y bones in bass, you have no worries there - it doesn't matter how big they get, the bone structure is the same as you see here in the video.
Thanks for tuning in and until next time, good luck and good fishing!

@pen14 We leave the belly meat on the carcass as this contains toxins stored in the fat. We also slowed the cleaning process for the viewer's sake. Thanks for your thoughts & good fishing!
Lot of wasted meat there.Dont cut it of so soon....keep cutting rolling the knife down and over the rib cage, you'll get a lot more meat, bigger fillet of GOOD meat.
@TheeLifeOfBob On the smaller fish, we generally go around the rib cage as the amount of meat is very thin and minimal, but on bigger fish, there would be a bit more. Thanks for taking time to write to us and for tuning in.

@thundermistlures No problem, wasn't trying to be rude, I know a lot of people who wont eat the belly meat but I just cut the fat off and have never had a problem with it
@justinemery2 Really appreciate your comments and thanks again for writing in and sharing your tips with us. It's a good habit to remove the belly fat and glad to hear you do that (if there are any contaminants in the fish, that is one place they will be)
I use this method and it works well, however, when cutting through to the tail fin, I leave it connected so that once I have the filet ready to remove, I flip the filet (leaving the filet connected to the tail fin) then remove the skin by running the knife between the filet and the skin beginning at the tail. This makes it much easier to remove the skin, it doesn't slip out of your hands that way like it did for him.
The smallmouth I catch are really light in color, does that have to do with how clear the water is or something, because I fish in really clear water( lake Michigan).
@super360man1 These are basically catch & release fish to some poeple. We will keep fish that we definitely know will not survive if released - at least they will not be wasted. On the other hand, there are those who enjoy fishing for & eating bass. Thanks for your view & good fishing to you!
@super360man1 how do you think bass fishing began? it began as a way to catch food and evolved into a sport, real fisherman eat they're catch and dont just catch it for a picture on the wall
I was wondering if you ever came across Parasites (looks like black pepper behind the skin) or white worms (curled in meat of fish)? Any comments about this..(besides not eating it.
@sdebassige The small spots are actually called 'black spot'. They are parasites that live in warmer fresh water & fish are their host. They are of no theat to us if eaten. Also, the small worms found in the flesh are of no threat as well. They can easily be removed from the fillet. Thanks!
this was soooo heplful i fish on gull lake and im only 14 so me and my dad now know how 2 fish and fillet our bass thanks to you. thank you so much and good luck out there:)

@elchasai Cooking the entire fish will give it more flavor for sure. Fillets are especially good to give to the younger children as they don't contain the bones. Thanks for commenting & good luck on the water!
@elchasai Can I clean my bass & cook it just like I do with pan fish? Chop the head off get the guts out & take a spoon to the scales? I tried this filleting from the video & it seems like such a waist of good meat.
I just successfully skinned my first bass fillets! I am so proud of myself I can not see straight. I was afraid I would tear up the little fillets however I kept the knife cutting towards the skin and it cut right off cleanly. Thank you again.
Thank you very much. This was very helpful. I caught my first bass ever today. Ended up with 8 small to fair size in all. I am very excited to eat what I have caught. I was always taught if you kill it you eat it.
looks kinda wasteful to throw the other meat parts away, you got 1.5 lb fish but not much meat was collected. Or I would fry the whole thing but w/o scale, fin, and guts. just like in the asian market fry them. the muscle meat is good to eat too, you're the first I've heard it's not good eating. anyway your video is not bad but could be better.

Thnx for the video, I caught my first smallmouth the other day and decided to give this method a shot. Worked like a charm and will help to feed a hungry college kid ;D
lol im 11 my parents dont trust me with a filet knife yet but i keep 1 in my tackle box anyway cause i usually just get dropped of with a pocket knife :)
@thundermistlures wait so if you catch like a perch on a beach next to a city, then the contaminants in the water won't go into the meat? oh and can't you use the head and etc. for soup?
@thundermistlures No problem. When I go fishing for bass i cut open there stomach (after I fillet of course) as you can find bait in side I once found a craw daddy in one and a couple of smaller fish.
I'm one of those rare women who lives to fish. I get out as often as I can. Traditionally smallmouth bass around here have been treated as a rough fish and most people pursue trout and walleye instead, saying that bass don't taste good and that they're hard to clean. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! Not only was this my first time doing a filet, it was a bass. And now I know why many don't like the taste - probably that muscle meat. My dad was impressed. Now I can't wait to try the northern vid out! :D

Good choice of size to bring home. You don't want those big bass, you wanna let those big one go and let them live. Right on legal size or little above is best to take home.
just wanted to let you know, if you remember i was teaching my wife to fish, your video helped alot in the cleaning process, and her first fishing trip out, she got a 14 inche rock bass and a 9 inche striped bass from wisconsin river below mossinee dam, she was so excited and shes addicted now, we are going again today, wish us luck.
this dumb ass forgot to tell us, how loaded with mercury all bass are. the washington fishing regulations has a warning on the dangers of eating bass.
@harrad100 i didn't realize this video was called "a fishing notice for everyone in Washington". the whole time i thought i was watching a video on "how to clean a bass". seems like it's a good thing bass exist in places other then Washington.
thank you very much, im teaching my wife to fish, and we are going to peshtigo river in crivits wisconsin, and small mouth are whats easiest there, and ive never cleaned a bass so i can now show her the proper way.
@spankybrandonf and also any other information you can help with about small mouth bass would be great, like best bait, and any tips or tricks that might come in handy. thank you very much for any help you can provide.
@spankybrandonf Glad you enjoyed the video and we hope your fishign trip with your wife goes very well for you and that you both catch plenty of bass!
I just caught a really big largemouth bass, and I've never butchered one before, so I hope that I'll do okay... thanks for the video, I'd be lost without this.
All I know is how much DELICIOUS MEAT you left on.

Thnx for the video, I caught my first smallmouth the other day and decided to give this method a shot. Worked like a charm and will help to feed a hungry college kid ;D

bit of a waste isn't it...throwing away like half the fish
lardtaziumwadmaster 1 year ago
@lardtaziumwadmaster There really is not much meat left...very little to nothing left on the ribs.
Also, the belly typically holds any contaminants, so it's best to avoid eating this section.
However, you can save the remaining part of the fish and finish cleaning it and use it as a base for a fish soup or chowder.
Thanks for taking time to write to us - until next time, good luck and good fishing.
thundermistlures 1 year ago
@thundermistlures wait so if you catch like a perch on a beach next to a city, then the contaminants in the water won't go into the meat? oh and can't you use the head and etc. for soup?
gokucrazy22 1 year ago
@gokucrazy22 ...yes, you certainly can use the fish head as part of your soup stock.
Thanks again for writing in & good fishing.

Be careful during the summer as some bass will have worms.
superboy0317 1 year ago
@superboy0317 You're right about that. The good thing is that the worms will not cause harm to humans. Thanks for posting!
thundermistlures 1 year ago

Is it possible to remove the teeth? I just have a fantasy of inserting my penis in it's mouth for a couple minutes and I don't want to injure myself.

Good choice of size to bring home. You don't want those big bass, you wanna let those big one go and let them live. Right on legal size or little above is best to take home.

Run along the bone? is it, on top of the bone? or on the side of the bone? im afraid that i might cut/split the backbone lol
43405555 1 year ago
@43405555 You would run your knife along the side of the back bone..the knife should follow it along very nicely and I'm sure you'll do just fine!
