  • I've never been a fan of "lets see YOU do better". I guess for two reasons. The first being that there are plenty of really talented people out there and some of them invariably can do better. Does doing better give you the right to be an asshole: ofcourse not. Secondly, when music is released for public consumption, it is naturally released for public opinion. Whether or not the opinion is informed is irrelevant if its posted on a forum that anybody can access. But to summarize, Mayer ROCKS!

  • John Mayer is one of the greatest songwriters I have ever heard, in my opinion he is the best. His songs are so unique and diverse, no two songs sound alike. He writes great love songs and is a great guitar player. With songs like Vultures, Neon, Splitscreen Sadness, Clarity, to blues stuff like Slow Dancing and Gravity, just to name a few are so great I don't see how people don't like him.

  • 'noodled around with'

  • Thats the uglyest les paul iv'e ever seen

  • 0:22 BAYWATCH song hahaha

  • G@Y!!!

  • Ya know, I just cant get into this guy....He's a good guitar player and all?...But none of it moves me like others have. I've looked into his stuff, and nothing really stands out as " oh, thats John Mayer"...ya know what I mean?....Maybe its all the Hollywood scarlets hooplah he surrounds himself with,...he seems to get more recognition for that, than his guitar playing...

Just my honest opinion...not knocking him...

  • @rcrinlv02 You should listen to his John Mayer Trio set on "Where the Light Is". Much better than any of his pop stuff.

  • @libertyfalls I actually went ahead and ordered that DVD.. ( as well Albert King too !! ).....I'll be honest. He plays & sings well. He wasnt brought to my attn until I saw a Crossroads show on CMT. Him & Keith Urban...and a couple songs caught my ear. Not so much the playing. I've seen Kieth in person, and the man can shred if/when he wants to. John's good, just not identifiable to me.....yet?...We'll see. Thx for the tip!

  • @libertyfalls agree'd John mayer Trio is much more of a bluesy setting and in my opinion much better than his pop stuff... better musicians too

  • @libertyfalls .....I got & watched the DVD. It was ok , more to listen to, than watch for me....To put it best ? Watch this DVD, then right afterwords?...pop in a live SRV live DVD. Curious to what your thoughts are going to be....

  • @libertyfalls With Pino Palladino ! It blown my mind !

  • @rcrinlv02 man if your spine doesn't shiver when he plays his solo on Belief on the Where the Light Is DVD, then John Mayer just isn't your bag baby.

  • Man this guy gets A1 trim out the Wazoo. Isn't that why we all started? This guy is the only reason there are enough good looking chicks at the Crossroads Fest to put on the DVD for all the Wankers. Landreth, Cray, McLaughlin, Guy, Trucks, and Carlton combined don't get half the action this guy does which truly qualifies him as a Master in his own right.

  • @rcrinlv02 dude i FELT exactly the same way UNTIL i heard "vultures" check that song out....INSANE...and "no such thing" is also pretty good..

  • @rcrinlv02 i agree. the trio's performance on where the light is is what really turned me on to him. i felt the same way as you for a long time

  • John Mayer, we all know he's a serious player that cares a lot about his tone and his soloing. It's just wrapped in a complex manner into a celebrity pop guy popular with the ladies. That's why us He-men find it hard to sponge of his masculinity. haha some shit like that,

  • @christenstjohn I dare you to post anything near this good.

  • @libertyfalls hahahahahahaha!!! EASILY. I'll post it just for you.

  • @christenstjohn 80's hair metal doesnt count.

  • @libertyfalls leave it, man. some ppl on youtube are just ... bitter :) check my vids!

  • @christenstjohn dude, WOW. you seriously think that top gun cover comes anywhere close to john mayer? with that level of distiortion a half-blind deaf retarded monkey from mars could play guitar. post a clean guitar cover that comes anywhere near john's tapping bit at the biginning and ill admit im wrong. BUT so that i clear things up, im NOT a mayer fanboy. he is far from the best guitarist ive heard.

  • @christenstjohn you're just not guitar geek enough to get these jokes

  • @christenstjohn It's his phrasing that's impeccable. You don't have to sweep/tap/shred all the time you know? Also keep in mind that he's mostly a blues player.

Do you not like him or do you not like blues? If the answer is blues or both, then there isn't much credibility to your statement, now is there?

  • @christenstjohn LAME? lame is air drumming tou "your love" like a fucking homo.i like your hair though... its the same doo my mom had in 1987. keep on rocking queer:)

  • 0:10 "This of course is a Gibson Les Paul." :D

  • I'm not completely sure what he is talking about on this video, but he sure makes it look good. :)

  • If john is in to letting beats go by, and "playing with the tension, I think he is really talking about playing in the groove, and should take a not from the master--Tre Anastiasio. BTW I am a mayer fan, just saying some of you guys would probably like Tre.

  • He really likes that 90210 theme song

  • 4:43 - 5:10 .... "you know?" haha. I WISH I DID

  • what effects does have on that?

  • @patrickspicer1 Cornish NG-2 Fuzz.

  • @libertyfalls and some reverb :)

  • @libertyfalls what kind of nut is that?

  • @gamergeek3000 LSR roller nut I believe

  • @libertyfalls yeah it didn't really look like it maybe an older model?

  • That guitar could use a paint job.

  • Where can I get that Les Paul ??

  • i dont mean anything bad by this, but i think john mayer plays alot better when hes live than on his original recordings, i mean you can really see his skill, its quite impressive. I mean when I hear his tracks on his records they dont quite have the same flare as when hes playing live or with other guitarists, maybe he tones it down abit on his records for the mainstream or maybe he just works better in front of a crowd. But whether you like his songs or not, hes still a beast at blues soloing

  • Pearls before swine...(in my case)

  • This of course is a ... Gibson Les paul. :D Mouahahhahah. Killer jokes !

  • all i'm saying is, you can knock John Mayer all you want to. I personally think he is an amazing guitar player.

  • i like the slap pick thing but its super easy alot of people say its hard but its not then again i started playing bass before guitar so its easy for me

  • hes pretty damn good

  • Hahahaha, Johny M. You rule

  • In reading everyones comments it looks like a good amount of you have big boy crushes on John Mayer. Yeh he is a good guitar player but his music gargles balls. Lesson was ok at best. Bring the hate mail

  • @manbearpigwillgetyou When you start jamming with bb king, clapton, buddy guy, etc. let me know. If his music gargled balls he wouldnt be worth 40 million. Im sure youre some fat pimpled pig that just lost 48 hour battle on world of warcraft and are making stupid comments out of frustrated, exhausted bordeom...

  • @libertyfalls ahaha killed him

  • @libertyfalls now thats hate mail!

  • @libertyfalls i couldnt agree with you more!

  • @libertyfalls hahaha that was an amazing post man...im laughin my ass off

  • @libertyfalls Hey, WoW is a fun game =P It's just like any other game idk why its so outcasted, now MW3 sucks balls (I'm not fat though =P)

  • @manbearpigwillgetyou fucking moron.

  • @manbearpigwillgetyou I couldn't agree with you more. He gargles big, fat, gnarly, hairy balls.

  • good lesson very helpful

  • Great! Thank you John for this lesson. It's a good thing to have some tips from a great guitar player!

  • HAHAHAHA welcome to how to shred!

  • oh man... the first minute just kills me... this is great... I'm such a guitar geek...

  • @rodrigozamo samee hahah

  • bahaha this is awesome the start cracked me up! sweet child of mine lmao!

  • he's a flipping god omg.

  • Awesome lesson....covered neon recently...so it was easy to get his pick/slap style......will have to work on it though to get that off time thing and playing around...........he's brilliant ...like all great blues player it seems that he "made the deal with the devil himself"....u kno wat i mean !!

  • Hahahaha he's so funny :D

  • I'm a huge fan of Mayer, his signature move (the slap/pick) is way too hard to learn it

  • @radiohm3 then spend more than half an hour working on it. its not hard at all

  • @radiohm3 Dont listen to that dude. The slap/pick thing is a bitch. Not impossible, but its hard to get down.

  • @libertyfalls

    what slap/pick thing?

  • @tapilaha watch the song neon

  • He's hilarious

  • That was some funny stuff. He is such an amazing musician.

  • He is freaking intelligent, talented, funny and I presume handsome as well. Girls love him don't they?

  • @Rozq87 Yeah, he only dates A list celebrities.

  • what kind of theory does he know?? is it nashville number system?? or what

the just modes and all that??

  • @Alwayseatseconds SInce he went to berklee probably standard figured bass notation with extensive knowledge of traditional and jazz music theory. Including modes, scales, etc. The great thing about berklee is they have separate classes for blues, jazz, progressive etc. So they can teach you applied theory in that specific genre. They also focus heavily on commercial music. Berklee is the place to be.

  • @libertyfalls berklee is cool but you gotta be top of the class to really get the full effect of the school and its a quarter million dollars for 4 years.

you can go to small conservatories and they can do fine.

but if you got the cash, have at it

  • @jakesimmons815 Well most people dont graduate from berklee unless they want to teach. Most people go te berklee not only for the education but for the contacts out there. All of my buddies and myself never graduated. We got offered killer opportunities through different people doing various things for good money. But yeah, it was like 16,000 a semester when I went. Very pricey.

  • 0:08 .... This ofcourse is a gibson les paul hahahahaaha

  • Comment removed

  • uhhhmmm YES PLEASE. he's gooooood.

  • Idiot Savant.

  • shit he's fast!

  • I need to change my pants.

  • @macbethshoes47 Yeah, I filled the cup the first time I saw this too...

  • He has the most amazing long fingers. His hands are are a lyrical turn-on. I could look at them for hours.

  • I love what he say's at the very end of the video, that's so true !

  • This guitar solo makes me want to senselessly mutilate my own genitals.

  • Too much Vibrato.

  • It still BLOWS my mind when people say that he isnt a good guitar player or that he is overrated!! Pisses me off really!

  • @nickmartone1986 totally agree with u

  • john mayer is partly the reason why i sold my electric guitar, his amazing ability to play is enough to compensate for my lack of guitars and musical ability

  • @rjaafar you must have never loved to play guitar...selling your guitar because of John Mayer's talent made you feel like crap inside? thats a weak ass exscuse to stop playing

  • lol, i wasnt really serious, i sold my guitar cuz i had to build a new computer, i do play ukulele though

  • seriously fuck you for being so good.

  • how is he generating that much speed without hammering genius is there anything i can do to get that fast.

  • yeah, he's a freak of nature. People like him would have been killed in the middle ages because they would be considered "possessed" or accused of being a witch. LOL!

  • Totally agree well put LOL.

  • just keep practicing

  • ha-ha "this of course is Gibson Les Paul"..LOL.. around 4:00 it's like thumb slapping/popping on the bass, John..

  • john mayer and keith urban did a crossroads together and Mayer was clearly out playing him when they would go back and forth on songs. Urban is a good player but Mayer was on top of him during the whole thing. They're totally different players too. Im sure urban would smoke Mayer on country style songs.

  • i really liked the John Mayer/Brad Paisley Crossroads...I could care less about Keith Urban...

  • Me too! lol!

  • @rpcurry are you joking?

  • no way ... hes soooo good its unreal. love his style. best modern musician of our time. saw him in philly on sunday. love you john mayer

  • tang ina ang galing!!!

  • He is a freakin great guitarist!!

And God I wish I could play like him!Oh how I wish...

  • it almost looks easy...

  • haha oh wait he just said the ng-2

  • god damnit it i want to know what he's using

  • I love that flick at 8:07

When he does that live in Memphis I am gonna lose my sh*t!!!!!!

  • I see Mayer is getting more to that Jeff Beck kinda thing. In other words starting to make the guitar sound complicated as much as possible and weird :D

  • aaaaahhhhhhh finally a video where you see the right hand technique, like on the intro to neon live in la,one of my fav things about mayer his right hand stuff

  • hes just too fucking good

  • @ARocketToTheStars hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • hahaha hilarious.

  • damn where can i get the whole lesson, the magazine?

  • that is the whole lesson.

  • haahah the outakes were classic!

  • this is cool..........but i wish guitar world would have let him teach one of his own songs

  • I felt the same at first, but what I love about this lesson is that it provides a great insight in his right-hand technique, which I love btw.

  • gibson les paul...funny guy

  • MOTHER FFFFFFFFFFFF !"#!#$ PLEASE STOP JOHN... every day playing better and better

  • "Hey, this is John Mayer here, and I'll be teaching you how to turn people off at a party" (proceeds to hysterically butcher Sweet Child 'O Mine) bahaha I didn't think Mayer was that funny

  • At least he didn't play Stairway to Heaven.

  • haha, excellent
