Entertaining movie. I liked Brad Runyon. They should have made a series of this for TV. Good plot and acting. Funny how the Fat Man's partner got hit over the head twice. Odd to see Emmett Kelly in whiteface (but he had to protect Willie) and he wasn't bad as Ed Deets.
When the cops kill a suspect in a situation as the Clown - Deets - it is Murder. As good as Out of bullets and no possible way of escape - to shoot the guy is Murder... Legal in 1952. In today's world the clown could have beat the murder rap of Roy - and maybe did a few years for the other stuff. But for the cops to kill him like this is just Murder. I'm glad I live in the 21st Century.
The guy at the horse stables (John Russell) was [ironically] the LawMan - in the 1958-62 TV series. His hired car was British - hard to drive in L.A. with a Right-Hand steering. And here's an Ooops: The clown calls Roy - "Ray" at the end of his prison performance 42:30 into the flick. Ooops!! But they left it in the movie.

Great little who-done-it. The actor who played the clown was, of course, Emmett Kelly, famous clown and ocasional actor.

@44scd Nero Wolfe dates back to 1934 Rex Stout novels.. The Fat Man was created originally for radio in the 40s by Hammett.
