Has to be the best rpg released here, it was literally a game changer. Final Fantasy VI. This changed RPG Games forever. There has been no other game even closely like it. I am not a fanboy, I play all rpgs some suck bad like BoF IV: Dragon Quarter, and some that are epic like FF VI and Seiken Densetsu 1 (FF:Legends US)

EQ traces it's roots back to D&D more than anything else, and it's predecessors were games like Ultima Online, Meridian 59 and Neverwinter Nights (AoL).
@AD7BK1 - actually, Sierra and Final Fantasy VI has fuck all to do with it. M59 and Ultima Online were the first real MMORPGs. Everquest was the first hugely popular MMORPG (despite all logic at the time). As such, almost all modern MMOs branched off from EQ's style and gameplay. FF6 was a great game, and I played the hell out of it, but it lent nothing, and has nothing to do with MMOs in any way, shape or form.

@kuaieq actually WoW sucks in almost every way imaginable, and the graphics aren't THAT great. At least EQ takes SKILL to do well in. WoW is well known worldwide as the MMO for N00Bs.... which is why n00bs are the primary people who play it.
@Shufei Absolutely. If you're like my friends and me, who played EQ a lot back in the day but no longer have the time for the grind, check out the EZ Server on EQEmu. Still somewhat quest-based, moves fast, and you can explore the world pretty quickly.
It only took a group of six of us maybe 8 or 9 hours to get to the point that we could go hunt some old world dragons, Tormax, etc. Nostalgia relives - and it won't take six months of grinding to get there.
EQ will always be the best, unstoppable MMORPG that has the grind-n-loot mechanic to it. UO will always be the best in terms of gameplay, freedom, player interaction, and just about everything else. Humanity will never experience something as special as Ultima Online ever again.
I agree, though the downfall of UO started with the trammel BS. The game went downhill from there, but overall I think it was the best MMORPG if you look at mostly before that. They really need to make a UO2, so you have a high population, and bring it back to the old days way.

I still play a bit, I am on the Bristlebane server though. Loads of people stopped playing, but there is still a decent group of people on there, granted due to the numbers grouping can be hard to do since most people will level 2 characters at once to avoid looking around for people.

Did any of you WoW noobs look at the date on this? 1997...lets do the math for you since you probably can't do it on your own. WoW launched in 2004. So 2004-1997 would be a 7 year difference.

eq was awesome, still is a fairly fun game. WoW is probably a better game now, but that's only because it could learn from EQ's mistakes. Plus, there are some things eq has right that wow doesn't... The only reason why EQ fell out of favor, imo, is it failed to keep attracting new players, instead focusing on the base that was already there... it made sense short term, really hurt the game over the years. A game dies when people stop buying the boxes in the store...

Although I'm not sure what it was exactly. You had a soundtrack that mixed with the world and first person nature and multiple nature of Everquest made it the most immersive experiance I've ever had with a game.
WoW is a great game, but I've never felt part of the world in the same way that I did with Eq.
WoW would be the closest though. Most games of the time had a height map rendered world, more like randomly generated spilled milk.
I play WoW and it's defiantly more 'fun' in the sense of actual game play.
BUT, nothing can beat EverQuest's immersion. I'm 23 and have been playing games since my c64 and Apple II GS (read: GS) that my parents had when I was born.
I grew up on NES and then SNES and every system after all the way up to the current generation.
I loved games like Civilization and RPGs when no one else my age did.
That being said, no game was ever more immersive than EverQuest was.

What amazes me about the original Everquest is that they are STILL releasing expansions to the original Everquest (not talking about the sequel either) and the game is still turning a profit.

I've been playing since 2003, and I played WoW for about a year. Now, granted I only got to level 43 in WoW, I'm at 80 right now in EQ and I can safely assume that EQ > WoW. Maybe you need the full raid experience to really like WoW, but I can get raiding in EQ right now without gaining 20 more levels.
As for the community, it's mostly late 20s to late 40s adults, so there aren't as many morons. If you like PvP then I'd stick to WoW, but if you hate those alliance dipshits Tbagging you, cmon in
Island of Kesmai, Kesmai Studios MORPG played on CI$ in 1984 then released with a GUI as Legends of Kesmai in 1996, which in 2000 was bought out and shut-down by Ultima Online developer Electronic Arts.

No, it was NOT the first MMORPG on the market. First was "never winter nights" (not the 3d version that we know, but a 2d version from 92 (i think)). Other famous pre-EQ MMOs include: Meridian 59 and ultima online.
Ultima Online's early days still stand as best mmorpg game experience ever. No current mmorpg really rivals the aggressive rule set and pvp mechanics of old UO.
EQ was like WoW without instanced dungeons and raids, if you werent in the servers uber guild you were stuck farming for fungi tunics and ykeshas for your twinks with nothing else to do while waiting for new expansions and patches to add some fun.
Instanced dungeons = Elitefarming and reduces social activity.
what uber guilds? you didnt need uberguilds. sure for the sleeper and a few other big bosses you needed a few grps of committed players, but even casual players like myself got to raid in velious-luclin.

If anyone is interested in trying out EverQuest during its prime check out EQClassic, the devs are commited to restoring things before Luclin, and it will be one last shot at nostalgia :P hopefully it wont turn otu to be like all those other eq emu's :(
i love eq especially the old eq, i loved the old graphics, the old spell icons, the zone and merchant music, the old UI, running zone to zone, boats, the mirror of yourself in your inventory, old skelly graphics, all the cities, i could go on and on forever, but eq is still the best game ever

Everquest is like Heavy Metal/Rock while WoW is like shitty rap like Soulja Boy, it's all a fucking trend. Everquest is a real game, Old Everquest was the best, the Metal and Rock Genre's are real music, but you have these faggots like Soulja boy who say "Watch me crank dat robocop, superman dat ho." thank you yeormom, im glad someone agree's with me. Oh and btw i don't hate all rap, i like stuff like run dmc and public enemy, and repsect rappers like Ice-t and Mike Shinoda but thats about it. I also like jazz, classical (alot of the classical/medieval style music from early EQ) and Blues, but metal and rock have a special place in my heart. Oh and there is a classical emulated everquest server being made too go to google and type in EQClassic.

Did any of you WoW noobs look at the date on this? 1997...lets do the math for you since you probably can't do it on your own. WoW launched in 2004. So 2004-1997 would be a 7 year difference.
You can be in denial all you want but you should realize that the same Korean's that did most of the EQ engine are the SAME EXACT team that produced the WoW engine. Whether you like it or not, WoW would not exist without EQ and UO.

EQ is the original, and a mature game targeted at adults. WOW is a pop-candy MMO targeted for the teenie boppers, Emos, and masses.

eq was awesome, still is a fairly fun game. WoW is probably a better game now, but that's only because it could learn from EQ's mistakes. Plus, there are some things eq has right that wow doesn't... The only reason why EQ fell out of favor, imo, is it failed to keep attracting new players, instead focusing on the base that was already there... it made sense short term, really hurt the game over the years. A game dies when people stop buying the boxes in the store...

Although I'm not sure what it was exactly. You had a soundtrack that mixed with the world and first person nature and multiple nature of Everquest made it the most immersive experiance I've ever had with a game.
WoW is a great game, but I've never felt part of the world in the same way that I did with Eq.
WoW would be the closest though. Most games of the time had a height map rendered world, more like randomly generated spilled milk.
The detail in EQ was astounding.

I play WoW and it's defiantly more 'fun' in the sense of actual game play.
BUT, nothing can beat EverQuest's immersion. I'm 23 and have been playing games since my c64 and Apple II GS (read: GS) that my parents had when I was born.
I grew up on NES and then SNES and every system after all the way up to the current generation.
I loved games like Civilization and RPGs when no one else my age did.
That being said, no game was ever more immersive than EverQuest was.

This was pretty damn amazing for being pre-alpha in those days. In general, the graphics in games were better but for an MMORPG this was unheard of.
Consider the fact that MMORPGs have to have worse graphics than the average game so that they can hit the biggest audience. You know, people who don't have the best computer? They can still play.

What amazes me about the original Everquest is that they are STILL releasing expansions to the original Everquest (not talking about the sequel either) and the game is still turning a profit.
I mean damn, the game was good back in the 90's, but I don't think I could stand playing such an old MMO now that so much better ones both graphically and technically are out. Can anyone tell me what the Everquest community is like now?

I've been playing since 2003, and I played WoW for about a year. Now, granted I only got to level 43 in WoW, I'm at 80 right now in EQ and I can safely assume that EQ > WoW. Maybe you need the full raid experience to really like WoW, but I can get raiding in EQ right now without gaining 20 more levels.
As for the community, it's mostly late 20s to late 40s adults, so there aren't as many morons. If you like PvP then I'd stick to WoW, but if you hate those alliance dipshits Tbagging you, cmon in

Wow, horrible graphics (pre-alpha, I know). But honestly, best MMORPG ever. That game actually took talent and commitment to be good, unlike today's crap MMOs that cater to the everyone friendly "you can ALL be the best" attitude. Someone at Sony should wake up and make an MMO using the same exact layout as EQ. Would bring back a good chunk of us post-EQ1 players looking for that feel again.

No, it was NOT the first MMORPG on the market. First was "never winter nights" (not the 3d version that we know, but a 2d version from 92 (i think)). Other famous pre-EQ MMOs include: Meridian 59 and ultima online.

I love how the players seem to walk like C3PO.... The graphics actually look pretty similar to the finnished product... They must have put in higher res textures and made the game somewhat more 3d but its the game we all knew and loved. It was my 1st MMORPG - I wont forget it. Its a shame the sequel lost out to WoW, which is oddly alot more like the original EverQuest fromula the its pregenitor
