BTW - just took our kids to a birthday party at a big dairy farm up here. Most of the farmers near us have free-range cattle who are clean, bask in the sun eating grass and clover, and aren't cooped up in stalls sitting in their poop all day. This farm with 700 cows... was gross. I love raw milk - from clean cows that eat real food. You'd HAVE to pasteurize this disgusting milk from poop-covered cows eating fermented hay... and that is where pasteurization has its place.
And yes, you do need to know your milk source if you are drinking raw milk. My MIL has been getting raw milk for about 10 years now from a farmer who keeps everything immaculate - straight from sterilized teat to sterilized jar... and immediate refrigeration. All the members of my husband's large family have been drinking it and no one has ever become ill. It is also much more easily digested by the "lactose intolerant," because the milk sugars haven't been broken down by pasteurization.

It's also worse for the environment. Because it is much less efficient, there is actually a shortage of organic food available. This leads to people having the food shipped in from much further away. I'm no scientists, but we think that doing things like shipping organic milk 900 miles over the highway in a truck belching diesel fumes is probably canceling out any environmental benefits you might have gained from going organic.

Those cows are filthy, sick, and make dirty milk that must be pasteurized to be safe. Yeah... you can donate your UNPASTEURIZED breast milk to a milk bank for human babies' consumption.... and of course it is not pasteurized because that would kill all the nutrients. I just want to set the record straight that when you donate breastmilk to a HMBNA breastmilk bank, it IS pasteurized. However, babies drink raw milk straight from the breast and there is a world-wide push to raise breastfeeding rates because we know it is the best nutritional food. I'm just waiting for the day they make every woman pump her milk and pasteurize it before feeding it to her baby.

BTW - just took our kids to a birthday party at a big dairy farm up here. Most of the farmers near us have free-range cattle who are clean, bask in the sun eating grass and clover, and aren't cooped up in stalls sitting in their poop all day. This farm with 700 cows... was gross. I love raw milk - from clean cows that eat real food. You'd HAVE to pasteurize this disgusting milk from poop-covered cows eating fermented hay... and that is where pasteurization has its place.

And yes, you do need to know your milk source if you are drinking raw milk. My MIL has been getting raw milk for about 10 years now from a farmer who keeps everything immaculate - straight from sterilized teat to sterilized jar... and immediate refrigeration. All the members of my husband's large family have been drinking it and no one has ever become ill. It is also much more easily digested by the "lactose intolerant," because the milk sugars haven't been broken down by pasteurization.

It's also worse for the environment. Because it is much less efficient, there is actually a shortage of organic food available. This leads to people having the food shipped in from much further away. I'm no scientists, but we think that doing things like shipping organic milk 900 miles over the highway in a truck belching diesel fumes is probably canceling out any environmental benefits you might have gained from going organic.

The rise of farmers markets are is a threat to big-agri and big-agri has been using the FDA as their tool of choice to crush the competition. This is across the whole country and is escalating. As an example, even here in small town MT a family that sold home-made suckers at a farmers market had to stop until they get FDA approval.

FYI, Monsanto convinced farmers in India to use GMO cotton. The results were so horrific that over 200,000 farmers have committed suicide since 1997.

In California, raw milk is 100% legal and on store shelves. Rawesome was charged with operating without a proper license. This is about the right to be part of a private herdshare and organic produce co-op that is not subject to the expensive and bureaucratic public retail licensing laws aimed at large producers (because this is a small farm operating privately, and it's not open to the public).

I'm a raw milk drinker and I have absolutely no problems. It's the healthiest milk you can drink; even supposedly lactose intolerant people can drink it.
Drinking pasteurized milk will leave you constipated; it's like a forging war on your intestines.

If you drink unpasteurized milk you can FUCKING DIE! It is highly dangerous and can cause Campylobacteriosis "Raw and inadequately cooked foods of animal origin and non-chlorinated water are the most common sources of human infection (e.g. raw milk, undercooked chicken, raw hamburger, raw shellfish)." @colourmegone If you look at the CDC data - yes, from them - you will find that .2% of the population falls ill each year from food-borne illnesses like campylobacteriosis, listeria, salmonella, etc. However, out of the anywhere from nine to eleven million Americans drinking raw milk on a regular basis, there is only an average of .0005% rate of food-borne illness. This means you have a much greater chance of getting sick from eating vegetables or contaminated meat than you do from raw milk.

Yeah... you can donate your UNPASTEURIZED breast milk to a milk bank for human babies' consumption.... and of course it is not pasteurized because that would kill all the nutrients. How is it ok to kill all the nutrients in cows' milk for the rest of us? Fine, yes, it's ok - but give us a choice whether we want it pasteurized or not. Maybe we want to slow-pasteurize it ourselves and avoid homogenization, or make yogurt, or......... ?????

@northcountryrose I'm totally with you on the fight to be able to have access to raw milk. I just want to set the record straight that when you donate breastmilk to a HMBNA breastmilk bank, it IS pasteurized. However, babies drink raw milk straight from the breast and there is a world-wide push to raise breastfeeding rates because we know it is the best nutritional food. I'm just waiting for the day they make every woman pump her milk and pasteurize it before feeding it to her baby.
