I definitely agree that people living in countries where going bare-footed is the norm have much stronger feet and ankles than westerners who have weaked their feet by wearing trainers which make the muscles lazy by doing the work for them
But you can't make a weak foot stronger simply through not wearing the footware which has supported it for a life-time. Sure some parts will get stronger but the weak parts will get weaker.
I'm not trying to be arguementatitve and I respect what your trying to do but body mechanics isn't that easy. Before anyone can strenghten their feet they have to address the structure which can be done with specific exercises and foot placement while sat down but can take a long time. Then you can learn to walk with proper alignment then finally run.
I started having a knee problem after losing weight and being persuaded to do squats and lunges still being obese. As i lost weight i noticed a problem with my knees, specially when i ran, and the dr concluded it was patello femoral. Could running barefoot or using a huarache like the raramuri indians, help or even improve my knees?
Dude. shure. the thing is the Sport shooes make you to hit the ground wiht the heel and barefoot that won't be the case anymore. but barefoot is quite dangerous you need to make yourself a pair of huaraches or buy the vibram five fingers.. that would be even better if you would buy the Keep Stuff Out (kos) but they cost like 100 $ or so.. you have to choose
If you want to stop running in cushioned shoes you should go all the way and go barefoot, the sole gives you important feedback and helps you pick up a comfortable and efficient running form.
Minimal shoes decrease the feedback from your soles and make it hard to decide when you have trained enough for a day.
Stick to Barefoot Ken Bobs advice at therunningbarefoot. com! I started with 500 meters every day and if i was sore i didnt run, take it easy and dont rush it!
Barefoot walking is health when your joints are able to hold the right position, even in the moment of landing. But your right ankle is weak. This is what a lot of people have. But you are harming your ancle bones if you keep running like that. Possibilities: a) Weas shoes that stabilize your arch of foot. b) Learn to strain your foot while running without loosing the right position of the ancle. (physiotherapie, especially Spiraldynamik).
And, could the surface itself be slanted and have an effect just right here? What if the surface tip down more on our (the viewers') right? Bet the feet would adjust differently.
Can I ask you, do you ever or have ever gotten blisters? By pushing off the front of your foot like that seems like you could. When I started running barefoot a year or so ago, I did many miles on the road/highway and occasionally got blisters from doing exactly what you are. Any advice?
I think you would appreciate Vibram FiveFingers. They're designed to allow barefoot running mechanics, while protecting your foot from hazards and elements (glass, snow, etc.).
I appreciate the $70+ in my wallet. My feet have always worked just fine without being imprisoned and blisteed by wrapping some form of unnecessary protection around them. Protect the feet, and they will grow weak. Use the feet, and they will grow strong.
I stopped wearing shoes about 2 months ago and I can literally walk on glass. (on a side note I think that it spreads one's foot out in a not so great way so I ordered some Vibrams)
Despite human arrogance, we did not invent litter. It has been around as long as trees, birds, and sea shells. What we did invent was soft soles, by allowing our feet to go "protected" for most of our lives.
Better research involves studying people who have grown up all their lives without shoes- they have better developed foot, ankle, and calf muscles and run with much greater ease and balance than someone who is used to wearing shoes then suddenly runs barefoot for an experiment. Millions of years of evolution can't be wrong. Barefoot is better.
Dude, scientific studies have been going on for years of how the human foot functions like it does.. no shoe has ever come close. Nike, Rebox, Avias, Adidas, almost every damn shoe maker you could think of has hired professional athletes to try there shoes and then go barefoot, and the athletes always do better barefoot. In this case of nature vs tech, nature wins.. for now. Theyve tried everything from cleets to clods.. the bare human foot has always done better.

I'd say get something like Vibram Five Fingers, and start slow. Don't try and push yourself too much.

I don't run anymore, but when i did and wore shoes, i got really bad heel pains, it felt like my heels where bruced.
I don't know about your case, but i think barefooted is better, and of what i heard, its been proven to be better.

This would have made a great research project. Good job!
4:17 in the mile and 9:19 in the two mile? That's impressive!! Fastest for me when I did track was 4:57 and 11:04.

no, his right ankle just pronates more than his left. Watch video of Gebrselassie running in Berlin and you'll see that G's ankles do the same.
