@paganamber - well, the Kingston Trio, who first recorded this version, had a bass player, so they were actually a quartet. We Chilly Winds also employed a bass player here - our usual bassist Dave Batti was doing another gig at the time, so we were delighted to be accompanied by our bass-playing friend Rick Jarusiewisc.
Great version. My favorite is Tomas Dooley by a Mexican group as a cha-cha. My great great uncle was a Texas Ranger, so I would always say the Dooleys were in law enforcement and the Dulas were not. After the Dooley Cousins' DNA project, I quit saying it, as the Dulas and Dooleys DNA has numerous identical markers. TD. I was a folk singer in the 60s but I never would sing it.
Can't tell you how many times I've sung this song, solo and with a group. Even with our parody ending..."When the sun rises tomorrow, two out of three will be history." (with a group called The South Coast Trio at The Dana Point Cafe, CA). Always great to hear it by one and all.
you wouldn't like this song too much if your name was Tom Dooley, like my uncle. Every old fart that remembers this song, sings it when they find out your name. Thank GOD my parents didn't name me that!
Well sweetcharlie, your uncle also shares the name with Dr.Tom Dooley, who in the 1950s and early 60s before the war heated up was an angel of mercy to the poor and sick, esp. children, in Vietnam. He sadly died of cancer in his 30s.
Yes, I heard of him, who knows if I was related to that one or not? My uncle Tom is still alive here in St. Louis. From what my grandfather told me, we were related to the real Tom Dooley. He (my Grandfather) was full of exaggerated stories. LOL
I can remember hearing this song as a young boy...if my memory serves me correctly, there was a movie. Anyway...I enjoyed listening to these guys play this song. It is of course a sad song but it was a pleasure hearing this song after so many years.
They fooled me. Watch first, thinking it was the K.T., went to read what the poster wrote, thinking they were just older. This group does a marvelous job, I have "this version" done by K.T. on CD and this group is really really good
...as was the famous doctor who served in Southeast Asia before his premature death from melanoma around 1962...
but if you look at the song notes, the guy who hanged was actually Thomas C Dula, which was pronounced like "Dooley." So I think there's no bad karma here...
Sensei, I am looking for a recording of "Southcoast" by the Kingston Trio. I think my father was a fan in the 50's. He used to play it all the time on his guitar. He may have also been a DJ in a small Utah town at this time. I'm trying to help him tell his story.
@sensei48 In North Carolina, and most of Appalachia at the time, there was no such thing as a short "A" on the end of a word. So "Dula" was pronounced "Due-Lay", and over time morphed into "Dooley". That's also how the Grand Ol' Opry came from Grand Old Opera" (Op-Ray, Op-Ree)"
@Destiny4511 - meant to thank you for your clarifying comment. We knew this, of course, as most performers of the song do, but it's nice to have it here under the video as an explanatory comment.
I'm not saying you guys are bad...i'm saying this version is crap...the way Doc sang it was the way it sounded best. The Kingston Trio seems to change the tune to every good bluegrass song and make it all slow and weird sounding. You guys are good though.
No offense taken at all - I just meant we're amateurs and Doc is the pro of pros. The KT was riffing off of the Frank Warner/Alan Lomax version; Doc was doing his take on the Grayson/Whitter 1922 recording (this Grayson being the grandson of the guy in the song). I love your videos and have them bookmarked.
Chilly Friends you're not amature, you are PROFESSIONAL. I speak as a musician.
You should come to our bluegrass events we got going in Wyoming. We were at BBQ/Bluegrass up in Worland on Aug 18th with Lights On Bluegrass Academy out of Thermopolis, and we picked with some of the best bands there including Packway Handle Band out of Athens GA.
Hey, nice job. Thanks for going throught the effort to explain what the song was. (I didn't know it dated back to the Civil War murder suspect.) Then, of course, you have the fleeting reference to the 'fetching' woman who could NOT be ignored to leave us all wondering...
is ok
but my teacher sings better :)

I did see the original video of Tom Dula and some girl either his GF or another woman admitted to the killing on her death bed.
So it's possible, but not quite proof Tom Dooley was innocent. That in no way changes my vew of the death penalty, as it is needed for heinous crimes.
But DNA should be took of every condemned on death row and future DR inmates upon conviction.

Doc Watson did EVERYthing better than ANY of us who play today. Completely different version of the song, of course.
